REPOST of 1671
1st book: Dance Upon the Air by Nora Roberts
2nd book: The Bone Garden by Tess Gerritsen
The 1st book is within the genre "romance". The 2nd is within the genre "mystery".
What I enjoy the most about romance novels is there ability to totally whisk me away to another place through my imagination, without having to take a heavy toll on my brain. It's just good light-hearted fun to read and enjoy, while making me smile at the end that there are people living "happily ever after" in the world (or the world within the book). Within the genre as a whole, my favorite subgenre is the paranormal romance. It adds to the fun and light-heartedness with ghosts, witches, vampires, charms, etc. I like reading about all the mysteries of the paranormal and thinking about "what if" there was magic in the real world.
Mysteries do the opposite for me -- when I want to read a book and be totally absorbed and forced to think, I will pick up a mystery. Sometimes in life, things can get so routine with work, daily commute, errands...I feel I function on auto-pilot and real heavy thought isn't required. That is when I want to be shaken out of the typical and will pick up a mystery novel. Reading a mystery really pushes my mind's limits in trying to figure out 'whodunit' and why. I feel like it keeps my mind alert, aware and healthy - which is always a good thing! I prefer if the villian isn't obvious from page 1, but sometimes I feel like authors are really dumbing down their books for the general public. If I find a book that keeps me hooked and shocked at the end -- I feel like I've found a real treasure.
Book reviews:
1st book: Dance Upon the Air by Nora Roberts
The book was OK, typical Nora Robers paranormal romance. Nice story, felt like the couple fell in love too fast for a level of realism, but still was a nice love story. Reminded me a great deal of "Sleeping with the Enemy", and being a romance novel I could guess the end. It's the first in a triolgy and if you don't read the other 2 it feels not like a complete ending. Since I knew I was going to read the other 2 right afterwards, I was OK with it.
2nd book: The Bone Garden by Tess Gerritsen
Bit graphic for my tastes. Too much description of the medical students work for my stomach. And I feel like the cover description of the book was misleading. But, the story took some thought on my part, and I wouldn't have guessed the killer at all --actually I thought it was a bit of a stretch. The book spent most of it's time in the 1800's, very little in the modern day or with Dr. Isles. It is nice to know how far advanced we've gotten with the medical field in the last 100+ years.

10.6 Stand Up for Your Rights
Jerk, California
The protagonist in this book has Tourette's, so he is bullied throughout his life and struggles to come to terms with both the disease and the reactions of those around him. The book drives home the idea of, "You become what you're told you are,"--a self-fulfilling prophesy. If you're told you're garbage from the time you're a child, you'll grow up believing you can accomplish little or nothing in the world.
50 Let the Tarot Decide
Past: Smile (from Ashley)
Present: Boys Are Dogs (also from Ashley)
Future: 13: Thirteen Stories That Capture the Agony and Ecstasy of Being Thirteen (from Cassie)
Smile was cute--good art, but the pacing was weird in places and the chronology had major gaps (though, I suppose for a memoir that makes sense). Boys Are Dogs was mildly upsetting (I had a women's studies prof in college who cheerfully described "training" her husband by pinching him every time he said something she didn't like). 13 is astoundingly amazing and I think everyone who ever works with teenagers (parenting is work, too) needs to read it.

I am reposting this message because I added Cathy "NJ" to make it easier. I will also try and chang my name to say that permanently.
I just completed task 15.4 - Learn Your Numbers.
My # is 1, my maiden name was Cathy Roberts. For Part A: I chose Carolina Moon by Nora Roberts (she is also a 1).
Part B: Characteristics for the #1 are: Initiating Action, pioneering, leading, independent, attaining, INDIVIDUAL.
The book I chose for Part B was Pieces of Someday by Jan Vallone. I chose this book because Jan decided to become an individual. In the early part of the book she did what her father expected of her. She became a lawyer but her heart wasn't in it. Her individuality came threw when she decided to quit her job as a lawyer to become a teacher, her father would not approve but she did not care. She started to live her life for herself.

25.6 - Ashley FL'S Task - "Summer Lovin"
I read the book Forever by Judy Blume. The song that has a similar theme is Strawberry Wine, by Deanna Carter. The theme through both the book and the song is young people trying to keep their love alive after they are pulled apart by circumstances beyond their control. The song Strawberry Wine reminds me of summer because it talks of summer love, and the freedom and perfection that comes with it.

Ever since I was little, I have been aware of the unseen world. Maybe, I'm just keenly observant, but I've had many "odd" experiences that have defied logic and time. I wanted to learn more about what others have seen, felt, and heard, that currently have no scientific explanation, but that I feel are part of the natural order still left to be discovered.
True Mystic Experiences: Fascinating Real Life Stories of Spirits, Other Dimensions & Strange Phenomena by Jennifer Spees
(4 stars)
This book is a compilation of personal accounts taken from "Fate" magazine from 1948-1999. There are riveting stories of out-of-the-body experiences, premonitions, ghostly sightings, strange connections, and more. I was completely absorbed and read it in two days.

This brings me to 40 points.

I read Trans-Sister Radioby Chris Bohjalian(A GoodReads Author).
This book is a story of a man who has gender surgery to become a woman. It is told in the voice of 4 characters-the woman he is dating before, during, and after the surgery, the woman's daughter, the woman's ex-husband and of course the man himself. I would say this is a must read if you are interested in gender reassignment, or about human sexuality. It really brings out some very interesting issues-what decides your gender, how people see each other in certain roles, and how roles can change.
Is it a must-read? Probably not-as it is gives alot of detail about the surgery itself, which might make some people uncomfortable. And the topic itself is controversial. I found it very interesting myself so I would recommend it.
Brings me to 260 points.

I enjoyed both books and would recommend them.
I listened to Gods in Alabama in audio format and thought that the Southern accent of the narrator added an additional dimension to the story.
I found this to be a wonderful summer book: easy to read, delightful characters, good story.
I enjoyed Arlene's trip home to Alabama after a 10 year absence and a retelling of events that brought about her self-imposed exile. There's a variety of wonderful characters and unexpected events.
An interesting book and I'll be looking for more by this author.
I also enjoyed This Is Where I Leave You. This story of a dysfunctional family sitting Shiva for their father is funny, witty, poignant and warm.
The humour in this story is laugh out loud funny, at times (loved the cake/bedroom scene). It's a wonderful, light story of a family coming to realize what they mean to each other and what it means to be family.

Here are my reviews:
I loved the Dostoyevsky book - it contains 7 short works including White Nights and the Dream of a Ridiculous Man, two of the best stories I've read. He really knows how to start off a story - the opening lines are great. Notes from Underground starts off with "I am a sick man, a spiteful man. I believe something is wrong with my liver." Underground is the longest piece in the book, and the first half is a manic jumble, but the second half is a pretty good narrative. Like a lot of his books, these stories have shy, flawed characters trying to expose those who would exploit and intimidate others. There are not a lot of happy endings, but rather happy moments. This book is a good introduction if you haven't read any Dostoyevsky or Russian Literature. Plus, reading books like these which are set in the cold of Russia will help cool you down on stifling summer days! 5 stars.
The Teacher as Assessment Leader is a good overview of current practices in assessment for educators. It gives practical advice backed by research about how best to use assessment to determine what your students know and what they are ready to learn next. It also distinguishes between formative assessment (done throughout a unit of study to identify student strengths and needs along the way) and summative (end of unit/term assessment). A lot of the chapters overlap and make the same points - hitting you over the head with the same ideas. It's put out by Solution Tree Press, which also has on-line resources available at solution-tree.com. Being a teacher, I always try to read at least one education book in the summer, and I am always wary of teacher books that are more inspirational than practical. This book gives teachers direct advice about how to improve assessment practices. 4 stars.

Task 10.4 (Roll the Dice): Bullet by Laurell K. Hamilton (Dice rolled: 3, 6, 3 - Pages read 356)
Task 15.6 (River runs through...): Part A - Death with Interruptions by Jose Saramago, Part C - Soulless by Gail Carriger (Goodreads author)
Task 25.1 (Valorie's Task - Independence Day): Part A - His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik, Part B - Flirt by Laurell K. Hamilton

Task 25.5 (Helen's Task - Share the summer love): Part A - Ink Exchange by Melissa Marr, Part B - Rage of Angels by Sidney Sheldon (over 500 pages: 512)
Part C - Ink Exchange is a urban fantasy/YA novel. Even though I enjoy some YA fiction for its amazing storytelling, this seemed a little juvenile in the writing style but not the story. There were some very adult themes used. The main character, Leslie, deals with good versus evil, death, sex, obsession, etc. I did enjoy the fact that Leslie resolves her situation on her own though instead of relying on the help of one of the male characters, which at least provides young female readers with a strong female example.
Rage of Angels is a legal thriller, which is a genre I tend to enjoy because I like thrillers and the excitement that thrillers generate. Plus, I work in the legal profession, and sometimes it's interesting to read about lawyer characters...some authors get it right, some don't. Sheldon did pretty well with the characterization, but the storyline wasn't very realistic...what thriller is though. My interest was definitely piqued for 3/4 of the book, but the last 1/4 just made me not want to read. I could kind of see the end coming, and I didn't care for it.

10.6-One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Todd
A revisionist history novel about White Women who thru a government program in the 1850's go to live with the Cheyenne Women. It describes the harsh treatment the Indians faced by the US government and the struggles of the White Women in the Indian culture and their treatment by the govt. after they became part of the Indian world.

For My 1st Challenge:
1st – Paper or Clocks
My Gift: Origami Animals and People
My Book:
The People of Paper by Salvador Plascencia
This book, although unusual, turned out to be perfect for the task. I had checked by reading the first chapter which included the origami animals and people, but as I read the book I came across constant references to paper: the traditional letters, maps and books, but also masks, kites and more. When I reached page 125, though, it was definitely a match:
"...a hotel that upheld the strictest honeymooner policies, accepting only those who could provide a marriage certificate no more than two weeks old, with rare exceptions granted for paper and platinum anniversaries."
I would recommend it if you like quirky contemporary fiction. It is indeed different!

20.6 The Secret Life Of CeeCee Wilkes 5 stars - must read summer book! I really enjoyed this story about a young girl faced with many tough decisions and the effect they may or may not have in her life. CeeCee's life brings up many questions about morals and responsibility; the interesting thing is that you will find yourself constantly thinking what you would do in her position. It seems like an easy answer, but is everything so cut and dry? Ultimately, do you side with CeeCee or against CeeCee? This was a great page-turning summer read, a mystery you know the general ending to, and an incredible adventure in getting there.

#25.6 Ashley FL's Task: Pick one of your favorite songs and read a book related to it. Please identify the song, the connection to the book, and say why it reminds you of summer.
Both C. Same topic as the song and
D. Title of the book is also lyrics in the song, relate to:
Song: Under the Boardwalk by The Drifters and
Book: Under The Boardwalk: A Dazzling Collection Of All New Summertime Love Stories by Linda Howard & others. The song talks about 'down by the sea' and 'falling in love', which are in the stories in this anthology. And the title of the song is also a repeating line in the song "Under the Boardwalk" by The Drifters. This song reminds me of summer because the lyrics make me think of summer days on the beach at a youthful time when I wanted to think about falling in love. Also, The Drifters had some of my favorite songs back then.
#30.2 PJ Read's/Shannon South Africa's Task: International Children's Day
A. Read a children's classic book & pass it on/recommend it to a child:
I read The Black Pearl by Scott O'Dell and recommended it to my niece to read to & discuss with her 5th graders.
B. Read any book where a child is the main character:
The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate by Jacqueline Kelly, in which 11-year-old Calpurnia talks about herself, her family, and other people and events in the year 1899. This was especially interesting to me as this time in history is very close to that of my dad's growing-up years. Callie talks about the advent of the new drink, Coca Cola, and the viewing of the new auto-mobile, which looked so strange without any horses in front of it. And I loved her growing relationship with Granddaddy.

Just completed task 15.7 by reading The Twentieth Wife. This was a book I wanted to like way more than I actually did like it.
I would really like to see people recycle more in my city. It isn't required and it costs money and/or time to recycle here. One thing I have done to change this is to do my part by subscribing to recycling services so I can recycle our stuff! Putting it on the curb is just so much easier than dragging it around to the different drop-offs. I also talk to my students about recycling and other choices they can make that help the planet.
I would also love to see education improve, but I am not sure how much I can do with that aside from being a teacher and trying to change it from the outside in!

A. I was born in May so I read: The Carousel Keepers: An Oral History of American Carousels by Carrie Papa which is an oral history of people who worked with, on, and over the old wooden horse carousels. There are only a few of those left--and I just happened to see one last week when we stayed overnight at Story City, Iowa. It's beautiful and you can ride it if you like.
B. I was born on a Wednesday so I read Murder, She Wrote: Murder on Parade by Jessica Fletcher and Donald Bain, based off the Murder She Wrote tv series. It was just as annoyingly chipper as the tv show.
