20.6 - Supporting Goodreads Authors - Nicole CA's Task - List Maker
Must-Read lists abound. Let's create our own! For this task, read a book that is at least 300 pages and tell us whether it is a must-read or not and why:
Jurassic Park I think this book is definitely a must-read, because it is so fast-paced, and the writing really grips you! I especially liked the way the author incorporated scientific theory and ideas without talking down to the reader, yet still keeping it easy to understand. A very exciting read!
Previous tasks completed:

25.10 The Name Game. The Yom Kippur Murder. This is another cozy mystery series by Lee Harris. I gave this book (4*). For my second book I read Shakespeare's Landlord. This is the second book I have read by Charlaine Harris and I am not sure if I will continue either series. They are very similar just different names. I gave this book 3*.

--15.10: Aunt Celia
It was a fun little Austen continuation.
My Aunt Julie is the family member I'll talk about for this task because she's the aunt I'm closest to. I like her outgoing nature--so different from me, but a lot of my family is like that! She also plans parties really well. :)

30.5 - DLM Rose's Task - Virtual Block Party
First, since I don't much cook any more if I can help it, I'll bring brownie bites to the party. They stand out because they're small and chocolately and just plain delicious! And, pretty much anyone who lives in Richmond has always been quite happy to see anything from Ukrops (our former local grocery chain) at a party. Sadly, they sold the chain, but the new company still carries products from the Ukrops bakery, so brownie bites are still available for me to bring.
B. Read a novel with recipes
I read The Mango Season by Amulya Malladi. While I have no intention of cooking any of the recipes in the book, it DID make me think that it has been far too long since I've gone out for Indian food! I enjoyed the book - it's particularly interesting for the "clash of cultures" theme - the Indian woman who has been living in the US for 7 years, a professional woman living with and planning to marry an American man, who then goes home for a visit and has to deal with her family's desperate attempts to get a marriage arranged with a suitable Indian husband. The same type of issue is playing out with other young family members, who are not willing to necessarily follow the rules that the older generation wants to enforce.
C. Read a food-related non-fiction book (non-cookbook).
I read Julie and Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen by Julie Powell
I thought this was a fun book to read. I saw the movie, and have read both this and My Life in France. Since the movie was trying to semi-cover both books, there was a lot more in each of the books than in the movie - so, even if you've seen the movie, there's much more in the two books to enjoy. I enjoyed the movie and both books.

I read Larry McMurty's "The Last Picture Show" because this is my first challenge (paper or clocks) were the gifts. I figured you could give someone a nice picture for their wedding which of course is made from paper.
Really good book, much much better than I expected.

I've spent the last two weeks on a beach vacation, and spent much time with my toes buried in the sand and my nose buried in a book. I have lots of tasks to post!

Musings of a Bibliophile Review of Heartsick
My Review: ★★★★★
Heartsick was a dark thriller, which kept me quickly turning the pages, while at the same time my stomach was turning from the devious deeds of female serial killer, Gretchen Lowell. Her deadly rampage tallied a self-proclaimed 200 victims; the last victim being the cop who headed the task force to find her. While Detective Archie Sheridan did not die at Lowell's hands, he may have wished he had. Not only is the book an exciting murder mystery, it is also a deep psychological thriller.

Barrington's investigative skills take him around the world, often with him piloting the aircraft. He fits all the characteristics of the magic #1.
20.6 Make Our Own Must Read List (Any book[300pp:] & why it should *or shouldn't be on the list
*Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen - READ 7.20.10
My Rating: ★★★★★
This has been on many "best" reads and recommended reading lists for a few years now. After finishing the book I could see why, and kick myself for not getting around to reading it earlier. I loved how the story was told from the memories of an elderly nursing home patient. Janowski's memories vividly brought back the tough times of the Depression, and the life of circus workers. It's a moving story and one I think is worthy of being a must read !

30.3 An Ode to Illinois:
A. Lincoln's Men: The President and His Private Secretaries by Daniel Mark Epstein
B. Dream City by Brendan Short
I didn't care much for Dream City. Okay, I lied. I hated Dream City. But Lincoln's Men was excellent, and I would highly recommend this book for the way it rounded out Lincoln's character, his intelligence, and his basic human qualities.

30.3 Sheila's Task - An Ode To Illinois
A. I read Assassination Vacation by Sarah Vowell This book talks about the assassinations of Lincoln, Garfield and McKinley, but really focuses on Lincoln, with facts throughout the whole book. I learned a lot about all of the assassinations in this book, and in particular about Lincoln. There were a lot of stories that just don't get told in the history books. However, I found that chapters were way too long and it was a bit wordy, so I found it hard to follow and at times a bit dry.
B. I read My Life with the Lincolns by Gayle Brandeis. This book was an interesting read...I found it odd that the girl in the book thought that her family was the Lincoln family reincarnated, but at times her ''theories'' actually made a bit of sense. What I really liked about this book was the connection between the slavery/race debate of the 1860's to the race debate of the 1960's.

Cats!

Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World by Vicki Myron
Since I’m a librarian and a cat lover, I’m surprised it has taken this long for me to read Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World. It was so much fun to read about Dewey, named for the wonderful Dewey Decimal System, a mainstay of the library. What amazed me the most about this story was the habits and people connections that Dewey had. My two cats are a lot more into each other than they seem to be in touch with us. This was a personal memoir of Dewey written by his primary care-giver, Vicki Myron, and it did read that way sometimes, but all in all, it was Dewey’s story and he really stole my heart!

Task 5.6 ~ Nathan Hale (1st Spy) by reading A Man in Uniform by Kate Taylor. This is an advanced reading copy I received from the publisher and was a good little summer read. A few points of weakness and convenience as a plot device but it was entertaining.
The novel is based on the true story of The Dreyfus Affair, which was a political scandal that divided France in the 1890s and the early 1900s. It involved the conviction for treason in November 1894 of Captain Alfred Dreyfus, a young French artillery officer of Alsatian Jewish descent. Sentenced to life imprisonment for allegedly spying and having communicated French military secrets to the German Embassy in Paris, Dreyfus was sent to the penal colony at Devil's Island in French Guiana and placed in solitary confinement.

Always Looking Up: The Adventures of an Incurable Optimist. This is Michael J. Fox's second book. Although is deals a lot with his diagnosis of Parkinson's disease and the changes he has had to make as a result, it is more a book about taking what you are dealt and making the most of it. That's what I try to do, although not always successfully. I would rather try to seek alternate routes rather than wait for the roadblock to be removed.

Fav. genr #1 Paranormal/ Urban Fantasy
Darkfever- Karen Marie Moning
This is a new genre for me, as of late. But I have really been enjoying books in this genre.
Darkfever is about a girl, while trying to avenge her sister's death, who finds out she is a sith-seeer (The ability to see things of the Fae world). The Fae world is very intriguing to me. The reason why I have grown to love a good paranormal/ urban fantasy story is the unique worlds which the author's can create.
Fav. genre #2 Memoirs
I Love Yous Are for White People: A Memoir - Lac Su
This memoir describes the trials and tribulations of Lac Su; beginning with his escape from Communism Vietnam to the United States, as a young child. The memoir describes what it was like for Lac to grow up as an Asian immigrant in California. He had experiences with an abusive father, gangs, and love.
I enjoy reading memoirs because the author's true voice always comes across in their writing.

Task 5.4 (Lesser Known Awards): When browsing the Awards List, I found the Gold Star Award Winners. I've never heard of the Gold Star Award.
The list includes Over a Thousand Hills I Walk With You by Hanna Jansen
This was a heartbreaking tale of a yound girl in Rwanda during the genocide. She miraculously survived but her story is horrifying.
My new total should be 230.
