Kelley (shewolf0316) | 0 comments Photojim wrote: "kelley, I can answer your b-day question. Find a book that you want to read that you think someone else may have already read.

And therein lies the rub. :-/ Since it's usually review books that are advance copies, that means I'm normally reading them before anyone else can even get their hands on them.

I do manage to squeeze non-review books in there a little each month but those are few and far between or are library audio books and the library books always hinge on availability.

I do appreciate the suggestion though. Thanks Photojim.

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) Kelley, when you open up someone's profile there are about 4 buttons you can click, undernearth their info box. One is "add as friend" another is "compare books". Goodreads then automatically puts up a list of any book that shows up on both your shelves and the other person's shelves, ie the books you have in common. It really helps me to find books that I own but havn't read yet that are on the birthday girl shelves. I have yet to have to scroll threw all of their shelves. I use the "compare books" button on each profile every month til I find something I want to read.

Thanks Brians Girl. I'm SO new to goodreads I've not had time to try out even half the functions that look interesting. I've seen the compare books link, but it never occurred to me to try that for the bday thing since I just started in here.

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) Your welcome. You'll find your way around soon enough. That Compare Books feature really makes finding birthday books easier for me.

Yes, you can do a search of a person's bookshelf. You go to the shelves, and its going to be at the top right. Just type in the title, and it will tell you if the person has it in his/her shelves.

message 107: by Laura Lulu (new)

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) Kelly, like Yz said, you can search a person's shelves--when you're looking at their lists, there is the bigger Goodreads entire site search box in the top right, but a little under it there is a smaller search box that is specifically for searching bookshelves.

Kelley (shewolf0316) | 0 comments thanks everyone for the suggestions on quicker ways to hunt for bday read books. Like I said, I'm so new in here I've not really done anything beyond joining a couple groups and starting listing my gazillion and one books. :-) I took someone's suggestion, forget whose now and actualy the very first book I tried it on, came up on the first bday person's book shelf that I checked. :-)

message 114: by Kelley (new)

Kelley (shewolf0316) | 0 comments anotehr question... I thought I saw somethign posted somewhere that had websites or resources or something for finding authors/books to fit the "locations" challenges. Thought I saved them but since I don't remember what they were, none of my saved book search websites seem to work for that. Suggestions for finding books based on setting/location? doing a search on "indiana" for example, brings up mostly indiana jones novels. :-)

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments Another day and another book bites the dust! I'm making short work of this in this short month.

1. F this book!:

2. It's my birthday and I'll read if I want to:

3. "We named the dog Indiana": Cry No More by Linda Howard (2/1) The main character is from Indiana. She returns home to her parents several times in the book as well.

4. I love this stuff:

5. Don't let me be alone and unloved on Valentines day: How to Host a Seduction by Jeanie London (2/3)

6. I'm black and I'm proud!:

8. If we was talkin' dead presidents, why'd we pick the cheapest two?:

9. If all your friends jumped off a bridge would you do it too?: The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty by AN Roquelaure (2/4). This was given to me as a Christmas gift by a friend of mine at a family function. She made sure that everyone knew that it was basically S&M porn. Her mother and grandmother looked at me funny all day. My children are used to it though. I think next year I will buy her a big pink but-plug for the family gathering. Who knows? Her husband might even appreciate it.

10. Without direction, how am I supposed to pick anything? What do you mean my choice? I'm scared. Hold me.:Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill (2/5) My February pick it for me challenge book recommended by Julie. Thanks Julie!
