2010 February Monthly Challenge: Participants' Lists Thread
Kelley, when you open up someone's profile there are about 4 buttons you can click, undernearth their info box. One is "add as friend" another is "compare books". Goodreads then automatically puts up a list of any book that shows up on both your shelves and the other person's shelves, ie the books you have in common. It really helps me to find books that I own but havn't read yet that are on the birthday girl shelves. I have yet to have to scroll threw all of their shelves. I use the "compare books" button on each profile every month til I find something I want to read.
Briansgirl "Master Book Sale Huntress" wrote: "For birthday reads I check out the list of birthday girls from the thread, and hit the "compare books" option on their profile. "Thanks Brians Girl. I'm SO new to goodreads I've not had time to try out even half the functions that look interesting. I've seen the compare books link, but it never occurred to me to try that for the bday thing since I just started in here.
Your welcome. You'll find your way around soon enough. That Compare Books feature really makes finding birthday books easier for me.
Kelley wrote: You can do a computer search on just one person's bookshelf? I didn't know you could do that. Unless yu're meaning just scroll through the pages myself. That's what I tried to do last month and it was just WAY too time consuming and I quit on it. ..."Yes, you can do a search of a person's bookshelf. You go to the shelves, and its going to be at the top right. Just type in the title, and it will tell you if the person has it in his/her shelves.

thanks everyone for the suggestions on quicker ways to hunt for bday read books. Like I said, I'm so new in here I've not really done anything beyond joining a couple groups and starting listing my gazillion and one books. :-) I took someone's suggestion, forget whose now and actualy the very first book I tried it on, came up on the first bday person's book shelf that I checked. :-)
anotehr question... I thought I saw somethign posted somewhere that had websites or resources or something for finding authors/books to fit the "locations" challenges. Thought I saved them but since I don't remember what they were, none of my saved book search websites seem to work for that. Suggestions for finding books based on setting/location? doing a search on "indiana" for example, brings up mostly indiana jones novels. :-)
Kelly, there is a list of Indiana authors in the Suggestions thread for the February Monthly Challenge. As well as civil war etc stories for No.8.

And therein lies the rub. :-/ Since it's usually review books that are advance copies, that means I'm normally reading them before anyone else can even get their hands on them.
I do manage to squeeze non-review books in there a little each month but those are few and far between or are library audio books and the library books always hinge on availability.
I do appreciate the suggestion though. Thanks Photojim.
