My son is still a ball of germs, and I have a sore throat today...BUT I am forcing myself to think positive. I'm putting on my germ fighting mojo today, and hopefully opening some windows for at least a few minutes to freshen the house.

message 802: by [deleted user] (new)

Yay for the dishwasher! I keep telling my family about the magic box that is in the kitchen, explaining to them that all they have to do is open it and insert dirty dishes. They still toss them on the counter.

message 803: by [deleted user] (new)

You also have to mention the trash can, which is under the sink, I suppose. :(

Maybe try washing all of your floors etc. with a mixture of hot water, vinegar, lemon juice and tea tree oil. Sounds gross, smells even worse, but is actually better for anti-bacterial cleaning than lysol. And, maybe you should be taking some vitamins.

Gundula,
Thank you for your post, I have to show my husband. I have been mopping with a water/vinegar/lemon juice mixture almost every day for about a week and he thinks I'm insane. I think he just hates the smell of vinegar, which I use on everything.

Not at all. A lot of the "green" brands of cleaner one can buy at health food stores are vinegar based and adding tea tree oil just augments the bacteria fighting power (oregano and thyme oils are good as well, they are both anti-viral and anti-bacterial).

message 807: by [deleted user] (new)

I'll have to get the tea tree oil, thanks for the information. I've cleaned with vinegar forever, but I had no idea about the tree oil.

Diane (dianedj) Christine - I'm sorry that your home is under the weather.

Lisa and Jeannette -- the computer is sooooo nice!! I need to get comfortable with it but I'm sure I'll love it. Still trying to get everything moved from the old one to the new one, but the Internet IS hooked up!

Glad you are enjoying the new dishwasher Jeannette!!

message 810: by [deleted user] (new)

Anyone else watch American Idol?
Anyway, these girls don't sound too impressive tonight, huh?

message 811: by Lisa (last edited Mar 03, 2010 05:35PM) (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Christine, I watch American Idol. Shall we start an American Idol thread too? ;-)

ETA: BUT I'm on west coast time so the show doesn't start for 2 hours 25 minutes. I'm thinking I need to stay off the threads until I've watched the show.

message 812: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh yes! Let's do that!

message 813: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Okay, I'll start one. I'm also totally addicted to Lost, but I just go for a ride with that one, and it's being discussed in another of my groups.

message 814: by [deleted user] (new)

I love Lost, but usually just babble in confusion for days after each episode.

message 815: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianedj) I am SO in on the American Idol thread!! Christine, great idea. I am on west coast time too, so Lisa, I'll be hanging back with you!

Hmmm....I don't watch reality tv except for American Idol and Survivor. Oh, I guess The Amazing Race, but that's really truly it (since I'm wearing a paper bag on my head when I watch the Bachelor then that doesn't count)...oh and sometimes I watch the Biggest Loser, but that could count as health education, right? I'm not commenting on Hell's Kitchen. No. Comment.

Of course you will! Haha! See, the gross comfort foods follow you to every thread. :D

message 820: by Katri (new)

Katri (Valancy) | 68 comments I don't watch TV at all. I don't even have a TV that receives programmes! I only use it to watch DVDs sometimes. So I'm totally out of the loop when people talk about TV. I still don't feel I'm missing out on all that much, though...

But lately I've been watching the film adaptation of Sarah Waters' Fingersmith. It's awesome. I'm actually liking it better than the book, I feel the pacing's better and it doesn't drag as much in some parts, which was my problem with the book sometimes though I loved it in general. I just finished watching Part 1 last night.

message 821: by [deleted user] (new)

Fingersmith is one of the books that I really want to read this year. I've had it for a while and I'd like to finally get to it.

Did you sing that song when you were a kid:

"Nobody loves me, everybody hates me, guess I'll go eat some worms....."?

message 824: by Shelly (new)

Shelly | 7 comments Gundula, Can you tell me the ratios to use when using the water, vinegar, lemon juice mixture? And how much tea tree oil??

I would love to try that!

message 825: by Manybooks (new)

Manybooks I just play it by ear somewhat, the ratios are not set in stone, and you need to experiment somewhat until you find a ratio that suits you. I like strong, clean smells, so I might use more vinegar and tea tree oil than others. Usually, I use about half a bucket of hot water, a cup or two of white vinegar, a cup of reconstituted lemon juice (use the no-name kind, it's cheaper), and a few tablespoons of tea tree oil. If you need more heavy cleaning, you can also add a bit of Murphy's Oil Soap. Or, use Murphy's oil soap to clean the floor, then use the other mixture to rinse and disinfect.

I also keep a bunch of spray bottles around the house with about 1/3 vinegar to 2/3 water. Handy for spills and sticky messes!

message 827: by [deleted user] (new)

I'll be gone on a college visit all day Friday. Don't anybody do anything "gross" without me! :)

Katri (Valancy) | 68 comments I like tea. I like tea very much. I don't like job search. I don't like it at all. Especially when I'm not getting any jobs. And when my brain isn't working because I stayed up too late writing. Writing (and learning languages) seems to be the only thing I'm any good for, though, a pity I can't get paid for it.

But I baked rolls yesterday! They were good! And I had a singing lesson and it was good, too! I got some really interesting songs to practice...

message 829: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) So, this group has been open to members just since 1/4, so for just about 2 months. We now have over 950 (comfort read) books on our bookshelves! I've been paying attention because I'm looking for our 1,000th book. It's so exciting that we have so many books shelved, and it's interesting what a variety of books we have for our comfort read books.

Have you been reading any Dr. Suess lately? :)

message 833: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) Lee, I use the same mixture of vinegar and water to wash fruits and vegetables. Makes me feel like I'm cleaning off some of the insecticides and germs.

That's interesting, I've never thought of using it on fruits and vegetables too. I may give that a go! Since my daughter arrived, we no longer have any chemical or store bought cleaners in the house. It's so much cheaper and easier to use vinegar, water, baking soda and lemon for just about any cleaning job.

message 835: by Manybooks (new)

Manybooks Scout wrote: "Lee, I use the same mixture of vinegar and water to wash fruits and vegetables. Makes me feel like I'm cleaning off some of the insecticides and germs."

Does it get rid of the disgusting waxes they sometimes put on apples?

message 836: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) Well, it seems to. Surely it does more than just rinsing with water. Actually, the recipe I found on the Internet included grapefruit seed oil, but that's a little expensive. Probably adding a little lemon juice, as Lee does, would do as well.

*blinks* Huh? I've never read any, so I don't know what this even refers to...

message 838: by [deleted user] (new)

Morning all! I'm trying to work up my courage to call my mother-in-law and tell her something that she doesn't want to hear. It's actually ridiculously unimportant (the starting time of a family party that I have to host), but she doesn't like not getting her way. I'm scared.

I'm finally starting Jodi Picoult's book today, and I'm washing my windows (big excitement there, I realize that this deserved first mention). What's everyone up to?

Dr. Seuss wrote a lot of Early Reader books in simple rhyming verse, such as:

I will not eat them here or there.
I will not eat them anywhere.
I do not eat green eggs and ham.
I do not like them, Sam-I-am.

So your post (835):

I like tea. I like tea very much. I don't like job search. I don't like it at all.

recalled Dr. Seuss's style to me (which just shows how my brain works most days!) It is difficult to make a word/book reference joke with someone who hasn't read the book! *sorry*

Wow, you don't know what you're missing. But Dr. Seuss is not very well-known in Europe, I only found out about the books when we moved to Canada. They are poetic picture books, both funny and enlightening. Start with The Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham. And, if you like Christmas stories, How the Grinch Stole Christmas!.

You know, Gundula, Dr. Seuss always frightened me as a kid! And, yet, the rhymes are stuck in my head.

message 846: by [deleted user] (new)

Jeannette wrote:Make your husband call her!"

I asked him to, and he gave me the excuse that she'll want to talk to me anyway. But I did just call her, and I told her that I was changing the time so that my sister-in-law (her daughter) could make it, and she kind of ignored everything that she didn't want to hear. She kept saying, "Well, I'll let you know later when we'll be there". I was like, "Well, not until 4:30" and she said, "Well, I'll let you know then"...this went on for a while.

I know this sounds mean, but if she insists on arriving at the "wrong" time, just don't be at home (or, just don't have anything ready and greet them in your bathrobe etc.). On the other hand, I wouldn't know what to do in such a situation as well, and it's easy to give advice when you're not personally involved.

message 849: by Manybooks (new)

Manybooks Jeannette wrote: "You know, Gundula, Dr. Seuss always frightened me as a kid! And, yet, the rhymes are stuck in my head."

The illustrations can be a bit creepy, but once I had discovered Dr. Seuss, I was hooked; I loved the rhymes.

message 850: by [deleted user] (new)

The thing about my MIL is that she favors one of her daughters over the other. I am closer to the sister-in-law that is not the favorite, although everyone gets along for the most part. It just seems like all decisions are based on what is good for the one over the other. This particular issue is so stupid (with the party) because everyone could make it at the later time, but my second SIL (the favored one) just doesn't feel like driving home later in the day.

I try to see the humor in the situations with them or else I'd go insane.
