The Cat in the Hat always frightened me. But, the rhymes were wonderful. So I'll stick with "One Fish, Two Fish".

The Cat in the Hat was creepy, agreed. What was up with that cat? He had some serious issues.

Katri (Valancy) | 68 comments I've heard of Dr. Seuss, but haven't read any. Certainly not enough to know his writing style. Sorry, but that was just my sleep-deprived, uninspired afternoon self. :P

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 529 comments One Fish, Two Fish was my favorite Dr. Seuss.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) When I was little One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish was my very favorite too. Now, I like some of the newer/sort of for adults ones: The Lorax, Oh, the Places You'll Go!, The Butter Battle Book. etc.

So, you rhyme when you are tired? I think it's great! :)

They didn't teach kids about "Stranger Danger" back then! lol

message 858: by [deleted user] (new)

I used to have a neighbor like that cat. Couldn't take a hint, and always made a mess.

message 859: by Katri (new)

Katri (Valancy) | 68 comments I was rhyming? I did't even realise it. :P I normally can't rhyme when I try - that's why I've stopped trying to write poetry, since I also write very bad free verse. Maybe not knowing I'm doing it is the way! :P

Good morning to everyone! I am exhausted after a night of insomnia, but there is a busy day ahead so I have to shake it off. First order of business is picking a book because I have waiting rooms ahead of me today...it's my son's therapy day. I have no idea what I feel like reading. I'm still mad at my last book.

Didn't you get a book stolen from the waiting room the last time? I hope that the book you end up taking along won't make you mad (I've had a few books like that myself, I've actually argued with books I'm reading, but, don't worry too much, they have not answered back yet). Here's hoping your day won't be too stressful.

message 862: by [deleted user] (new)

Haha! The book I just finished had a non-ending, which is sometimes fine, but in this particular place I think an ending was needed.

Yes, I'm headed back to that same waiting room! Yikes! I better be ready to fight to the death to protect my book.

message 863: by [deleted user] (new)

I was in the waiting room most of yesterday and took one of Terry Pratchett's juvenile books (any author would do). I finished the book in one day and really enjoyed reading it again!

The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents

At the slow rate I'm going these days, I'll never get another 1000 books read but it's lovely to dream!

message 870: by [deleted user] (new)

Okay, I really should have started the thread "Christine's kids are sick again". Of course Benjamin woke up with a new sore throat today....because I'm having that family party in two days. I'm crossing my fingers and toes for quick healing of whatever this is now.

Finishing Secret Daughter: A Novel...Lee, I bet you would like this one.

Have a great start!

Won't spring ever come and we can all get out into the fresh air again! I hope Benjamin recovers quickly and that no one notices that the glop is missing from the cake!

message 872: by [deleted user] (new)

How sad about your fish...at least she took it well.

And yes, I am sticking to my goop-free cake pledge. :)

Chrisine, my friend Merry is hosting her first book club meeting in April with the author of Secret Daughter: A Novel as a guest! I'm glad you're liking it. It looks like I'll be reading it too.

No way! Is this a face-to-face thing? Will you actually meet her in person? I'm excited to find a new author of contemporary Indian fiction.

message 877: by [deleted user] (new)

My children had a very poor religious education growing up (I'm ashamed to admit). When my daughter was 5 she attended a bible camp with our next-door neigbour, and told me one day that they had made Xs...it took me a minute to figure out that she had made a cross.

I won't be meeting her but Merry will. I think the author lives in her neighbourhood in Texas. I'm a little too far away to attend although I would love to.

Hey Everybody! I hope no one is sick today! I'm off to Omaha (excitement) for a few days. I want to know how the party goes Christine! :)

message 880: by [deleted user] (new)

Have a safe trip! I am just cleaning for the party today....such fun. :)
Hopefully nobody will freak out when they see the lack of goop.

We'll miss you!

Have a big bowl of goop in the fridge and if anyone complains and/or makes a fuss, take the bowl out and tell them to serve themselves.

message 886: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm seeing this a day late, sorry. Thanks for asking, he is doing better. Still a little cough, but nothing horrible at the moment (knock on wood).

Survived the party. No violence broke out once it became apparent that there was no strawberry goop in the cake, whew. I did get eye rolled and sighed at because I only had regular coffee and not decaf, because I bought soda in cans instead of bottles, and because I got the wrong kind of chips. Regardless, the kids had fun, the dog enjoyed the extra attention, and I didn't hit anyone. :)

So, you are not moving away without a forwarding address? That's good! I haven't had any family visit for years, so maybe I'm not as bad off as I always think I am. Of course, I'm way more evil than you are -- not nearly as accommodating! :P

Back home safe and sound! We had a great trip to the college campus and went to see Alice in Wonderland at a real movie theater! Speech Contest on Saturday went well, but not as well as we had hoped. One performance scored well, and the other not so well. That's life! It was fun to get away for the weekend, just the three of us. :)

How did you enjoy Alice in Wonderland? I thought that the trailers looked kind of creepy, especially Tim Burton's eyes. Oh, and I'm glad you survived the party with no major mishaps etc., Christine.

message 893: by [deleted user] (new)

Here's what I posted on another group thread:

I saw Alice in Wonderland last night, and I'm still not sure how I feel about it. I have never read either of Carroll's books, so I have no idea how much of it was "based" on the books and how much from Burton's warped mind. :) I did like Alice, the plucky heroine who did not want a rich husband that had a face like a horse! But I vacillated on Depp's performance -- he was pretty psycho! I hated the CG horses, but loved hearing Alan Rickman and Christopher Lee doing voices! My 15 yr. old loved it!

I think I'm going to wait a bit to see this. I loved Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, but I think my previous enjoyment could be ruined by watching the movie (I like Johnny Depp, but don't like "psycho performances" and I think I would never be able to think of Lewis Carroll and the Alice books the same way again; visuals are long lasting).

message 895: by [deleted user] (new)

It was very dark. The whole premise of the movie is that the Red Queen defeated the White Queen and took her crown. She rules by terror (lots of beheadings implied) and uses the Jabberwocky, Bandersnatch and Jubjub Bird to control her domain. So, the Mad Hatter vacilates between quiet madness (ala Tea Parties) and resignation, and boiling, seething anger. They need Alice to kill the Jabberwocky and defeat the Red Queen. It was all fantastical, too.

Too scary for many children, I would say. I don't mind dark stories, if the books they are based on are dark as well, but I think this is a bit overdone. I will probably want to see the movie on DVD sometime, but honestly, why do movies, even children's movies etc. need to often be violent, dark and terrifying.

Sounds so nice, a movie in a real theater! It seems like I never do that anymore unless I am taking Benjamin to see the latest dog movie (Hotel for Dogs, etc. Yikes!). My husband does most of the kids movies with them, but he tends to draw the line at the dog comedies.

Benjamin wants to see Alice in Wonderland, but now I am not sure. Hmmmmm.

message 898: by [deleted user] (new)

I wouldn't take young children to see it, definitely. I have been surprised that Disney branched out into movies for an older audience. Like I said, my 15 yr-old really enjoyed it. It was very colorful and fantastical as well as dark. And Alice's story was a positive story of girl-power! She found out who she was and did things her way. And as weird as the Mad Hatter was, he was also a very sympathetic character, too, sort of lost in the nightmare himself.

message 899: by [deleted user] (new)

Christine,

I wouldn't take Benjamin to see Alice. He might be overwhelmed by the movie. Has he seen Chronicles of Narnia? This is the closest I could compare with Alice for you.

I have to laugh, I got to take my daughter to The Garfield Movie, but now she is too old to ask for those kinds of films! lol

For all of the pet-lovers, I have uploaded a pic of my dog and one of the devil-cats. Both pics of the animals sleeping! :)
