I hate spiders, too, but my sibs never tortured me with them!!

Jennie (binkin) | 17 comments I used to be freaked out by spiders until I lived in a house that was practically overrun with them. They wore down my defenses and now I am able to think of them as "friends." I don't even freak out if one crawls on me, which is something of a miracle.

Jennie you are so brave. All I can say to that is Ewwwwwwww!

Thanks for all the best wishes everyone. I'm starting to get better but Maggie is in the thick of it and it's weird how we get different symptoms.

That's funny! :)

Lee wrote: "I can take giant cockroaches and other insects but spiders do me in as well. Ugghhhhh! ..."

I grew up in NYC where cockroaches, (small, medium, large, Jumbo, Colossal and Mammoth!) really gross me out. I always say that it's one of the reasons I decided to stay in Italy: I haven't seen a cockroach for 25 years!

I've out grown my aversion to spiders... I had to--my husband hates them more than I do and when we go to the house in the country I'm the one who has to de-arachnify the bedroom!

Lee (leekat) | 3959 comments Mod
There is nothing worse than catching sight of a spider on or near your bed! Ughhhh. I can't sleep when that happens.

I lived in Costa Rica where there were some really giant sized bugs including spiders and cockroaches. It's one of the reasons I won't consider going back there to live.

Hayes, one thing I noticed about Italy was the quantity of scorpions! I smashed a few in my bathroom. I don't know if the little brown ones are dangerous or not.

message 1059: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Yeah, by the bed is too much for me. For awhile I was leaving spiders alone but when I get bites, I'll kill if I see. I'm too scared to get them outside. Bad vegan!!!

message 1060: by Lee, Mod Mama (new)

Lee (leekat) | 3959 comments Mod
Well then I must be a terrible vegan because there's no way in hell I would leave a spider in my bedroom. I am too scared to feel bad about killing one when I know there are about 90 billion of them in the world.

Lisa wrote: "Yeah, by the bed is too much for me. For awhile I was leaving spiders alone but when I get bites, I'll kill if I see. I'm too scared to get them outside. Bad vegan!!!"

My rule: stay outside, I'll leave you in peace. But you have to stay out of the house!! I had one in the shower with me -- yuk! I still bang on the shower curtain before I climb in, even in January when we don't see any spiders.

message 1062: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) That's my rule too. Stay out of my apartment and my car and I'll leave you alone. Even though I'm terrified of bees and wasps anywhere. And allergic.

We were in the country house once. My husband was lolling in the bathtub and I was downstairs doing something, when I hear a voice calling me..."Help me... come upstairs please.... aiutoooo!" It wasn't an "I've had an accident" voice, it was a terrorized voice.

I went upstairs and into the bathroom and find my husband in the tub, looking up at the towel rack which was right above his head. On the towel was a big fat disgusting thing, staring at my husband with all eight of his beady eyes!

I was pretty grossed out, I must admit.

@Lee: the small scorpions don't usually come out when there are people around, and when they do they don't normally bite or sting. When and if they do, which is very rare indeed, it's like a spider bite or a bad insect bite, but nothing dangerous.

message 1065: by Lee, Mod Mama (new)

Lee (leekat) | 3959 comments Mod
Oh god, your poor husband! *shudder*

I had a feeling those small brown ones weren't as dangerous. I just crunched it with my shoe.

message 1066: by [deleted user] (new)

message 1068: by [deleted user] (new)

Wow, this topic is giving me the creeps! I think we only have one poisonous spider in Iowa, but we also have a little black guy that I call the "hand spider." It looks like a baseball mitt and they are smart! They watch you and react when you come after them! So weird to be afraid of such little creatures; it must be something we learn. Of course, allergies are super scary in their own right!

(We might all have nightmares tonight...)

You're right Jeannette. Okay, no more spider stories. Let's talk about something fun or yummy! :-)

message 1070: by [deleted user] (new)

How about this:

An Italian friend of mine, who lives in England now, made his own mozzarella at home. Pretty cool. He used unpasturized milk from Jersey Cows, which is pretty close to the buffala milk used in traditional mozzarella.

Great photo Hayes! The knotted ones don't even look like cheese.

message 1073: by [deleted user] (last edited Mar 25, 2010 02:49PM) (new)

It's my friend's photo. They are pretty, aren't they? Mozzarella comes in all sorts of traditional shapes, different ones from different regions: knots, braids, balls, you name it!

I'm off to bed... nighty-night everyone!

message 1074: by Jennie (new)

Jennie (binkin) | 17 comments Oh, I adore cheese. I've made fresh mozzarella a few times but haven't loved it; I need to try again, but I live really close to a store that carries awesome fresh mozzarella made on-site so my motivation is pretty low.

DH and I were just talking about what would constitute our "ideal day" and his included the mozzarella from that store!

message 1075: by [deleted user] (new)

They sell a braided mozzarella packed in oil & herbs at the local chain store. It is delicious!

message 1076: by Jennie (new)

Jennie (binkin) | 17 comments That does sound good. I really hate oregano though (weird, I know), so I usually avoid anything with "Italian herbs." Including red sauce pizza *ducks*

message 1077: by [deleted user] (new)

When I was pregnant I could not eat tomato sauce so it was 7 months of pesto pizza *yum* I miss that pizza (we moved away), but my husband was sick of it! lol

I was the mother of a 4 year old when I was 42. I felt my age, because all of the other moms were 10 years younger than I was at the time!

message 1093: by [deleted user] (last edited Mar 26, 2010 07:13AM) (new)

If you right click on the image you can save it to your computer. Then you open an account at tinypic.com where you upload the images (you can find a lot there too). This gives you a link which you put into the message like this:

between the = and the > (no spaces) you put the url code.

My son was 4 when I was 42 too! And now I know why you're supposed to have kids at 18 instead of 38!! The mother of a boy in my son's class became a grandmother last year at the age of 47 and I was 49!!

I have a friend who is about to turn 48 and her daughter is 3. And, I have a friend who's 59 whose twins are 18. So, there are plenty of older mothers, especially in cities.

ETA: Most of my friends were in their mid to late 30s when they had kids; only a few were in their 20s.

My brother was a grandpa at the age of 40! His daughter (my niece) was giving me tips about going through labor! *gak* My niece had her first in August, my sister had her 7th in December, and I had my first in April all within less than a year. If my daughter waits as long as I did, I might have grandkids before I'm too old! lol

I don't know anyone my age (personally) who had their first kid as late as I did. Lots of moms on their last or near to last by that age. (Except for my sister, who had another 4 after I did).
