Oh, don't they always look so innocent while they're sleeping. All three (dog & 2 cats) are beautiful. Those cutie cats must be good; they can't misbehave; they're just too cute! ;-)

I only take pictures of them when they are being cute! :)

Has anyone seen the movie Nine? I must admit I'm a fan of Daniel Day-Lewis and I was wondering if the movie was any good.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 529 comments Alice in Wonderland strikes me as too "old" a movie for a young child. (I'll never forget being taken to Gone with the Wind for my ninth birthday, and making my mother take me home in the middle. The death of Scarlett's mother scene was too much for me.)

I would think that Gone with the Wind would be or could be problematic for a child, especially a sensitive child and one unused to violence. And, from what I remember, there is quite a bit of both death and violence in Gone with the Wind. I certainly would not have been ready for such a movie at age nine. I even was somewhat scared when I watched the original Star Wars movie in 1978 (I was twelve) and had nightmares for weeks after we watched a black and white thriller called The Spiral Staircase (about a killer who stalks women with physical challenges) during family movie night at the Calgary Planetarium.

Interesting (inappropriate? weird!) choice of a movie for family movie night.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 529 comments The other one where I made my mother take me home in the middle was Fantasia. At age five. (Night on Bald Mountain sequence.)

Singing in the Rain for my eighth birthday was a real winner, though.

Susanna wrote: " (I'll never forget being taken to Gone with the Wind for my ninth birthday, and making my mother take me home in the middle. ..."

Me too Susanna! For me it was the field hospital scene with the guy screaming because they were cutting off his leg. I ran to the bathroom... and there was a loud speaker there so people wouldn't miss a thing while they were in the bathroom. I threw a hissy fit and my brother had to take me home!

ETA: Must have been the re-release in '67, so I was 8.

It was the absolute worst kind of movie. It was well done, but it featured this evil villain who would hide in a walk-in closet and before each of the murders, the camera would focus on the slats in the closet and you could see a pair of evil eyes (at least that's what I remembered). But, what was even worse was the fact that we were remodeling the downstairs bedrooms, including mine and I had to sleep in the guest bedroom. And, guess, what!! That room had a walk in closet, a walk in closet with slats. No wonder I was freaked out.

message 910: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) It reminds me of my friend who lived in the building next door to me when we were about 16/15 years old, and she & her parents went to see Wait Until Dark (blind woman being stalked, breaks all lightbulbs when guy shows up so they're on more equal footing) and on the way home, there was a power outage and they got stuck in the elevator with no lights. Eek!!!

I still don't think I want to see that movie again. It was all the more scary because it was something that could happen, not something so outrageous as to be unbelievable.

message 913: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I'm not a big scary movie fan. I like a few but not many. This is one I have no interest in even as an adult. Certainly not as a kid/family.

His father and I have a different idea of what he can handle (or I will say, what he SHOULD handle). Jim (my hubby) had checked out Avatar and said it would be totally fine...we all went, and it was SO not what I think is fine. I would much rather take the advice of other moms on this one. I won't be sending Benj to Alice with his dad and sister.

I'm not either. I don't enjoy dark and gloomy stuff much either. There are exceptions, but overall I am a baby.

Trust your instincts here, Christine. If the movie is as dark and menacing as Jeannette says it is, it would be better for your son not to see the movie at present. Movies are supposed to be fun and relaxing, especially for children.

Morning everyone!
My 14 year-old is having 7 teeth pulled today (for her braces, poor kid) so I'll be hanging out in the waiting room this afternoon. I finished Interpreter of Maladies yesterday (loved it!), so I'm not sure what to start.

Bookclub is tonight for Cutting for Stone. I would rather stay home with my daughter (hubby will be here, but I still hate leaving), but I am driving 4 of the people.

Have a good start to your Monday!

Christine, seven teeth pulled at one time!! Ouch (could they not have staggered this a bit). I hope that the braces will be a success, but why does she have to have so many teeth pulled?

message 920: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Ouch! Seven?! Reminds me of the line from The Sound of Music: Seven children?! Wow! But actually, I think it's better to get it all over with at one time. Even one tooth pulled is uncomfortable so might as well get it all over. Why on a Monday? Does she have to go to school this week?

message 921: by [deleted user] (new)

Good Morning All!

Well, I am thinking today will be a good day because I will not be within 5 miles of a dentist's office! Just thinking about it makes me cringe in sympathy! :( I hope it goes well, Christine, and I hope everyone else has a happier day ahead.

Unfortunately not. I got three opinions, all said the same thing. It's 4 baby teeth (which won't be bad) and then three of the adult teeth behind those. So it's 4 spots. Her mouth is really crowded. She's a nervous wreck. We're leaving in an hour. I may just "study" for bookclub in the waiting room.

She homeschools this year, but even if she was going to regular school they would do it on a Monday. She got up at 6:00 this morning to finish her work for today. She already put a dent in some of tomorrow's.

Let us know how it went. Hope your daughter won't be too sore and that her mouth heals soon. When does she get her braces?

message 926: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Christine, Oh, that's good that she has the flexibility re school. Poor kid. I'd been very anxious too. I hope it's more painless than it sounds.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 529 comments Oh, my sympathies! I had to have several pulled (I got my daddy's big teeth in my mama's small mouth) before I got my braces. Then when I had them on, they used them to pull down my upper canines, which were trying to come in in the roof of my mouth.

I spent my teens at the orthodontist. (4 years+)

Here is a link to the movie that Lee was referring to (I hope). I haven't seen it, either.

Yes! That's the one Jeannette. I was hoping one of you movie buffs would have seen it. :-)

Barb, I'm pretty sure there are no creepy Tim Burton puppets. It's a musical.

How funny there are two very different movies out with the same title (sort of)!

I think Daniel Day-Lewis is a great actor. Did you see My Left Foot?

That is the first movie I saw him in and I remember that it was a very powerful performance and a very moving story!

We are back. She was under for a lot longer than they planned. It went well though. He said that he saved "all the bone"....okay, I don't know what that means but it sounds good. She's puffy and miserable and propped up in bed now. Thanks to all for the well wishes.

I re-read the end of Cutting For Stone, and I am officially ready for bookclub tonight.

She's doing Motrin and ice. They didn't want to give her stronger meds because of her age. He did offer Tylenol with Codeine (spelling?), but that always upset her stomach in the past.

Bookclub was fun, and I bought Emma a milkshake on my way home.

What's everyone up to today?

Motrin and ice is a good combination. I think it's quite responsible and sensible that the dentist did not give your daughter any stronger medication. I hope that she's feeling better today and I hope she enjoyed the milkshake. When I had some teeth out and some oral surgery a few years ago, the dentist suggested that I eat baby food for about a week or two (that really works to keep the pain down, especially if you thin the stuff out a bit with water).

I have a driving lesson in a few minutes (I only have my G2 license and I have to practice driving on the highway for a year before I can apply for my G -- I should probably have done this years ago, but my father tried to teach me how to drive and it freaked me out for years). And, I have tons of reading etc. to do, as well as some phone calls and going through bills etc. (not fun).
