I'm going to make a dent in my unread bookcase this year too! Paula, I'm disappointed that North and South won't be a group read for Victorians but I have a copy here I'm going to read shortly anyway.

message 652: by Paula (new)

Paula | 184 comments Lee, I have to be honest... I was disappointed, too (is it ok that I say that since I'm co-mod?) I really wanted to read N&S and have tried reading Tess a few times and always put it back on the shelf. At least I already own Tess, I guess :)

I hope to have time to read N&S on my own soon as well. It's been patiently sitting on my shelf for a few weeks now and I know Richard Armitage is out there, waiting for me to watch his movie :) Now is not the time, however, as I'm behind on several group reads, it's our crazy busy time at work from now until early April, then off to France for a month so I'm already looking at the end of May before things calm down a bit over here.

Of course you can say that. Just because you're a mod doesn't mean you can't have a preference! :-)
It seems like nothing I've wanted to read has won for months and months now. Oh well, we're all busy and I've been happily comforting myself with all the great recommendations here.

Paula | 184 comments I just feel a little guilty when I don't want to read books that are chosen. I'm not a Byatt fan and am still trying to struggly through A Children's Book although it has now become a matter of pride to finish it, apart from the fact that it was a selected book for the group! So that is two in a short time period that I'm resisting. Ah well, that's why I join multiple groups or read books on my own, right?

Jeannette wrote: "I've been watching the Olympics. How embarrassing -- the Canadian crews couldn't get the ice made properly on the speed skating track. Not even with 3 zambonies!! (Isn't that a fun word?)"

Yes, it is a fun word! I need a fun word today so I plan to say zambonies as much as I can manage to fit it into any conversation. I'll update you on my progress later. :)

Granted, he has had some odd choices, but still. (He's being a typical guy and thinking with his zambonie)

That sounds like a great idea, and something I should really really do, too!"

Paula,
It's actually been good for me (I have to control my book buying habit). A few that I have read have blown me away, and I've had them forever.

message 658: by [deleted user] (new)

Emma is getting her second phase of braces on today....should take hours they said, poor kid. My son thinks this gives him a free morning without school (Ha! Tough zambonies!), but I've made a little list of things for his father to do with him.

message 659: by [deleted user] (new)

You are in top form today, Christine! I laughed so hard I nearly split my zambonies! (That might catch on)

message 660: by [deleted user] (new)

Paula,

It is hard to have to slog through a book when you are co-mod of a group. Over on Jane Austen we are setting up "side-reads" where we informally poll people and then just do a read and discussion, apart from the group read. Maybe you and Lee could do that (time permitting) with North & South someday.

message 661: by Lee, Mod Mama (new)

Lee (leekat) | 3959 comments Mod
Last year we did a few unofficial side reads because a few of us wanted to read Edith Wharton together. We read Summer and Ethan Frome which were both excellent.

Vienna seems to be a pure zamboni choice.

Just got back from the orthodontist. Sheesh! 3 hours, and they still have to do more braces after she has some teeth pulled.
I did finish my book in the waiting room though.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 529 comments I had my braces for over 4 years.

Stock up on books for the waiting room, is all I can suggest!

message 666: by [deleted user] (new)

Ugh! Just what I need, more quality time with waiting rooms. I'm never good with taking my Kindle into them either because everyone just wants to play with it. It's a pain in the zambonie.

Mary | 245 comments Christine wrote: "Mary, I'll look that up to add to my list. Thanks!

Holy Zambonies, BatMan! I can't believe this. Somebody stole my book while I was at my son's therapy session. It was on my coat on the chair, and someone walked off with it (it was obviously personal property...I had a big bookmark sticking out of it too). Anyway, just had to share the latest fun development of my day.

message 669: by [deleted user] (new)

Kidnapped by zambonies, no doubt! Sorry you are having such a complicated day! Was it a good book?

Wow, how low can you go? You know what I used to do at university, after someone pilfered my copy of The Princess Bride at the Graduate House? I would wrap the book I was reading into a different dust jacket (you know, like one that no one would be caught dead reading, or that no one would likely understand). I don't know if it worked, but after that (until I graduated) I had no more books pinched at the Grad House.

Paula | 184 comments Book thieves? That is ... that is.... I can't think of a word bad enough!

I do like the new use of the word zambonie, though, that's fun :)

message 673: by [deleted user] (new)

Book thieves? People with bent zambonies? (does that sound too rude? lol)

message 674: by [deleted user] (new)

Jeannette wrote: "Kidnapped by zambonies, no doubt! Sorry you are having such a complicated day! Was it a good book?"

It was The Namesake. I am ordering another copy from paperbackswap so that I don't spend money on the replacement. I was still on chapter 1 so I just started something else. But sheesh!

Paula wrote: "Book thieves? That is ... that is.... I can't think of a word bad enough!"

I know! Stop the Madness!!! I hope it was some crazed out of control reader that simply couldn't resist so that at least the book will have a good home.

Gabriele Wills (muskoka) | 178 comments LOL, Gundula. Love the "nackt" story, too.

I just returned from a 4 day working holiday, which was lovely but too short. On the shores of a frozen lake amidst rocks and pines, I swam outside in a pool surrounded by snow. It was sublime!

awww....I guess progress is important. Jim would probably strangle me if I started up again today though.
Busy day here. School stuff, appointments, piano lessons, speech group for BJ (my son), Awana tonight...hopefully nobody steals my new book.

Have a great start!

message 687: by [deleted user] (new)

You need to take your little guard dog with you! Dixie would have caught the thief! :)

I don't want to do my stuff today, I just want to read Little Bee!

Oh, and it may be FOREVER until I get to read a comfort book because my new book club selection was picked and is not at all giving comfort vibes to me. Anyone read Cutting for Stone?? Comfort or no? I'm assuming no.

It took about a year before my dog stopped growling at the huge steel monster that stopped in front of our house, ate a bunch of bags, then spit out the container. Since it's never come closer than the road, he seems to think it's ok now. The meterman, on the other hand, is apparently a force to be reckoned with.

message 697: by Paula (new)

Paula | 184 comments I can't wait for our busy time at work to stop!! I'm so tired and have just been dragging. I barely open my book at night before I konk out. Can't tell you how many times Mike has had to take off my glasses and put the book aside because I fall asleep reading. Ugh.... all I want to do is sleep in then spend the day reading with no guilt. I think that's the worst part - I can do with less sleep but when I can barely fit in time to read, you know it's bad!

(whining session over, thanks for listening :)

Hey Paula, I know what you mean about being too tired to read some nights. It really sucks when you can't get any quality reading time in because you're too exhausted. If I go for more than a few days I get pretty cranky myself.
