PattyMacDotComma | 3317 comments I am a card-carrying fan of Mick Herron's Slow Horses series, and the latest instalment, Clown Town, is terrific! He's such a good writer. This one has real spies, failed spies, and blackmailing pensioner spies.

PattyMacDotComma | 3317 comments Here's one for your Christmas shopping list. (Sorry if that's triggering for anyone.) The Twelve Days of Christmas Dogs: The Classic Edition by Amanda Sobotka is beautifully illustrated by Chris Dunn. Any dog lover would enjoy browsing through this one, with or without children.

Carolyn | 9892 comments Carnival of Lies by D.V. Bishop Carnival of Lies by D.V. Bishop is the fifth episode in this excellent 16th century historical novel full of espionage and political intrigue between duke Cosimo Medici in Florence and the Dogue of Venice.

All Princesses Die Before Dawn by Quentin Zuttion
A brilliant graphic novel set against the backdrop of Princess Diana's death. Great for those who enjoy character-oriented storylines with tough themes.

Something, Not Nothing: A Story of Grief and Love by Sarah Leavitt
Something, Not Nothing A Story of Grief and Love by Sarah Leavitt
This graphic novel might work for readers with a greater philosophical bent of mind. Not for me though.

Carolyn | 9892 comments The Boy With the Jade by Charles Bush The Boy With the Jade by Charles Bush is the retelling of a facet of an 18th century Chinese classic novel, describing the life of a boy born into a wealthy, aristocratic family and his quest to find his own purpose in life.

PattyMacDotComma | 3317 comments An odd, very short read is the story Aghwee The Sky Monster by Japanese writer Kenzaburō Ōe. His bio on GR says in 1994, he won the Nobel Prize in Literature for creating "an imagined world, where life and myth condense to form a disconcerting picture of the human predicament today."

Of course I read the English translation, but I assume it is every bit as intriguing and quirky in Japanese.
Aghwee The Sky Monster by Kenzaburō Ōe My review of Aghwee The Sky Monster

I've added a link to an English translation of the story where you can read or download it.

PattyMacDotComma | 3317 comments Another quirky one is Vera Wong's Unsolicited Advice for Murderers by Jesse Q. Sutanto. This feisty little Chinese lady gathers an eclectic group in San Francisco to help her find a murderer. Fun read and great audio.

Carolyn | 9892 comments The Man in the Stone Cottage by Stephanie Cowell The Man in the Stone Cottage by Stephanie Cowell, a lovely retelling of the lives of the Brontë sisters, within the bounds of the historical facts but imagining the events that influenced creation of their characters and stories.

Rosh ~catching up slowly~ (roshreviews) | 741 comments The Secret Book Society by Madeline Martin
The Secret Book Society by Madeline Martin
A historical fiction, but not exactly a book about books unlike what the title suggests. Goes quite dark, especially in the final section. A good book as long as you go in with the right expectations.
