Fiona Valpy spent seven years living in France, having moved there from the UK in 2007. She and her family renovated an old, rambling farmhouse in the Bordeaux winelands, during which time she developed new-found skills in cement-mixing, interior decorating and wine-tasting.

All of these inspirations, along with a love for the place, the people and their history, have found their way into the books she’s written, which have been translated into German, Norwegian, Czech, Slovenian and Turkish.

Fiona now lives in Scotland, but enjoys regular visits to France in search of the sun.

Hi BJ, thank you for getting in touch.

I don''t have any particular formula when it comes to writing my characters, but I do try to do as much on-the-spot research as I can, visiting the places and environments that I place my characters in. I then try to absorb as much as possible when I'm there and check in with all the senses - how does a place look, sound, smell? And how would each character respond to those different factors?

I also find it important to spend as much time with my characters as possible, even if only in my mind's eye. I love walking and do a lot of my thinking and character development on my walks too - they come along with me!

I hope that helps with your own writing. Many congratulations on the launch of your next book - I hope it goes well.
Best wishes,
Fiona(less)

Hannah Hi Fiona,

Thanks for the friend request. I'm not really looking at chick lit/women's fiction/contemporary (etc. etc.) at the moment as I'm focusing on fantasy and steampunk, but I do already have a copy of your book so at some point there will hopefully be a review! :)

xx
