4 Months from Start

Let's head to Patrizia's beloved country for a new trail challenge!

On July 27, 2024, the Via Appia (Appian Way) was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. This is considered to be the most important of the Roman roads and was used in part as a pilgrimage route in the Middle Ages known as Via Francigena del Sud (Via Francigena of the South). Part of the road is now submerged under asphalt and concrete, but the intention is to build an itinerary accessible on foot and by bicycle, as close as possible to the original route. Let's see what wonders travelers will encounter along its route from Rome to Brindisi.

✱ The Via Appia crosses four Italian regions: Lazio, Campania, Basilicata and Puglia.
✱ Due to its importance the Via Appia was known as Regina Viarium or Queen of the Streets.

Complete 13 tasks (one from each section).

Challenge Rules: All forms of books are accepted as long as they are 100 pages or more. When posting updates of completed books, please include a link to the title and author’s name, along with the date you finished reading the book. Please post cover if it is task appropriate. When you have completed the challenge, please copy and paste your entire challenge and repost in a new message, letting us know it is completed.

Trail & Tasks

1. The Rediscovery of a Road

In the spring of 2015, Paolo Rumiz, an Italian journalist known for his travel reports, decided to rediscover the route of the ancient Via Appia with the help of various friends, including a cartographer. The account of his travels on foot appeared first in an important Italian newspaper and then, more widely, in a book. They were both an immediate success, and it was soon decided to recreate the route of the ancient road with the idea of making it the Italian Camino de Santiago. The symbol created for Rumiz's book was chosen as a signpost, demonstrating the impulse he gave to this operation.

✱ Read a book where an important character is a writer or journalist (tell us who) OR
✱ Read a book tagged TRAVEL on its GR homepage OR
✱ Read a book whose author's first and last initials can be found in PAOLO RUMIZ.

2. The Roman Roads

According to a well-known saying, "all roads lead to Rome". In fact, the ancient Romans built an impressive network of roads that covered their entire immense empire, which was centered in Rome. The Roman roads were a true engineering feat, so much so that traces of them can still be found today. Three layers of different materials were used in preparation for the final covering. The roads, which included bridges and tunnels, were built so that two wagons could pass each other. It included milestones that marked the distance between the cities. It is not surprising that many of them formed the basis of the current roads and were used for centuries, even after the fall of the Roman Empire.

✱ Read a book with a road on the cover (post cover) OR
✱ Read a book set in a country once belonging to the Roman Empire (view spoiler) (tell us where) OR
✱ Read a book belonging to a trilogy.

3. The Via Appia

In 312 BC, the Roman statesman Appio Claudio Cieco started construction of the Via Appia, which originally traveled from Rome to Capua. Subsequently, it was extended several times until it reached Brindisi in Puglia. Emperor Trajan then built a variant named Via Appia Traiana, which ran mostly along the Apulian coast. The Via Appia was created to allow the rapid movement of the legions, and soon became an important commercial route. In the Middle Ages, pilgrims traveled parts of it known as the Via Francigena del Sud, reaching Brindisi, where they then embarked for the Holy Land.

✱ Read a book where a commercial business is important to the plot (explain how) OR
✱ Read a book where the MC takes a journey (explain briefly) OR
✱ Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in APPIO CLAUDIO CIECO (three word minimum).

4. Starting Location: Rome

Starting in Rome, you can't help but spend a few days visiting this beautiful city. Since we are about to travel along an ancient Roman road, we absolutely have to visit its various archaeological sites. It is worth spending some time in the lesser-known National Roman Museum, which is made up of four different museums and locations within the city. The Museum of Roman Civilization would be a must, but at the time of my writing it has been closed for renovations for many years.

✱ Read a book where the characters visit a museum (briefly share details) OR
✱ Read a book published in a year ending in 4 (share publication date) OR
✱ Read a book that has all the letters in ROME in its title (in any order).

5. The Appia Antica Regional Park

Created in 1988, the Appia Antica Regional Park is a green area that covers the first 13 miles of the Via Appia. Given the numerous monuments preserved here, the area has been included in the Appia Antica Archaeological Park since 2016. In addition to well-preserved sections of the actual road, it is possible to admire aqueducts and ancient villas. The most famous monument here is the Mausoleum of Cecilia Metella, an ancient Roman tomb transformed into a castle by the Caetani family at the end of the 13th century. It is not the only visible tomb you will see along the way. The ancient Romans used to build, at least the richest ones, imposing mausoleums for their deceased immediately outside the city walls.

✱ Read a book with tombs or a graveyard on its cover (post cover) OR
✱ Read a series book #1, #3, or #13 OR
✱ Read a book in which the MC's first name begins with a letter found in CECILIA.

6. The Castelli Romani Area

Just south of Rome, the Via Appia passes through an area known as Castelli Romani (Roman Castles). It owes its name to the fact that the most important noble families of medieval Rome had built their castles here, many of which can be visited today. The most famous is Castel Gandolfo, where the Pope spends a period of rest during the summer. This area is also one of the richest in archaeological finds, starting with Tusculum, a city that rivaled Rome before being subjugated. To visit some of these sites and monuments, you will have to take a detour, but it is well worth it.

✱ Read a book set during the Italian Middle Ages (from 476 to 1492: tell us when) OR
✱ Read a book with a male character who is very religious (tell us who) OR
✱ Read a book whose title starts with a letter found in CASTELLI (ignore A, An or The).

7. Along the Lazio Coast

The Via Appia then follows the Tyrrhenian coast for a stretch. Along the way, there are three locations that deserve mentioning: Terracina, Fondi, and Formia. The origins of Terracina are lost in the mists of time, but a hominid dating back 400,000 years ago was found here! The city has a centuries-old history, which is demonstrated by its various monuments. Fondi is known for having been the seat of an important fiefdom in medieval times and is home to an interesting castle. Of the numerous monuments of Formia, the most noteworthy is the Tomb of Cicero. It is a mausoleum from the imperial era attributed to this famous politician of letters who actually died nearby.

✱ Read a book where an important figure from the past is mentioned (tell us who) OR
✱ Read a book with 4 AND 0 in its page count (share page count) OR
✱ Read a book that has been on your TBR a really long time (tell us when you added it).

8. Capua

The original stretch of the Via Appia ended in Capua, whose remains are visible in the city of Santa Maria Capua Vetere. In the 9th century, the inhabitants were forced to move to the Volturno River, founding the current city. After visiting ancient Capua, you absolutely must visit the Royal Palace of Caserta, a UNESCO Site since 1997. Some define it as the "Italian Versailles," after all, its construction was commissioned by a great-grandson of Louis XIV. Its stupendous interiors have been the backdrop to many films. Nearby is Belvedere of San Leucio, a colony created by King Ferdinand of Bourbon to house the silk weavers, whose products are renowned and can even be found in the White House and Buckingham Palace.

✱ Read a book set in a location that has a "nickname" (tell us where) OR
✱ Read a book with a royal character (real or fictional; tell us who) OR
✱ Read a book whose author's first and last initial can be found in BELVEDERE OF SAN LEUCIO

9. Detour To Naples

From Capua, the Via Appia continues inland and prepares to cross the Apennine Mountains, but it is worth considering making a detour to Naples. From the point of view of the ancient Romans, the two port towns of Pozzuoli and Stabia were where the wealthy spent the summer in their villas. But for today's visitor, the archaeological excavations of Pompeii or the lesser-known ones of Herculaneum are much more interesting. Excavations in these locations are ongoing, and important discoveries are still being made. We are so close that we should definitely take advantage of seeing this true wonder of humanity.

✱ Read a book that was a "detour" for you in some way (briefly explain why) OR
✱ Read a book set primarily during the summer OR
✱ Read a book where archaeology is important to the plot (explain how).

10. Benevento

As we follow the Via Appia into the Apennines, we reach Benevento. This city has been an important road junction since Roman times, since you must pass through it while traveling from the Tyrrhenian Coast to the Adriatic. Little considered by tourists, even Italian ones, Benevento has several monuments that are worth a visit. It is also worth mentioning that it was the seat of an independent Lombard duchy. The history of its name is curious. Originally it was Maleventum (bad wind), but the Romans then changed it to Beneventum (good wind) because they considered the precedent a bad omen.

✱ Read a book that has had its title changed to a new one (include link to both titles) OR
✱ Read a book where the MC must make an important choice (explain briefly) OR
✱ Read a book that has all the letters in WIND found in its title (in any order).

11. Basilicata

Leaving the Campania region, the Via Appia crosses into the region of Basilicata. Both Melfi and Venosa have important monuments dating back to the Middle Ages, and the latter also preserves interesting archaeological areas. However, I propose yet another detour to visit Matera and its famous Sassi (Rocks), a UNESCO Heritage Site since 1993. The site includes a complex of buildings that include houses, churches, and monasteries, built into the rock and natural caves of the Murgia. This remarkable settlement contains more than a thousand dwellings that were first occupied during the Palaeolithic period and shows evidence of continuous human occupation through several millennia until the 1950's. Their recovery began in 1986, and today they are an increasingly popular tourist destination.

✱ Read a book with TWO of the following numbers in its page count: 1, 9, 5, or 0 (share page count) OR
✱ Read a book published before 1993 (share publication date) OR
✱ Read a book in which the MC's first name begins with a letter found in MATERA.

12. Taranto

We finally reach the Puglia region arriving in Taranto, one of the most important cities in southern Italy. It was founded by Greek colonists and has always been an important port, so much so that today it is home to important institutions of the Italian Navy. The local National Archaeological Museum should absolutely be visited as it houses one of the largest collections of artifacts from Magna Graecia (i.e. the Italian area formerly colonized by the Greeks). In addition to this, the city boasts various monuments, both religious, civil and military, as well as several archaeological sites.

✱ Read a book with a boat or ship on the cover (post cover) OR
✱ Read a book with a character of Greek origin (tell us who) OR
✱ Read a book whose title starts with a letter found in NAVY (ignore A, An or The).

13. Brindisi

Our final destination is Brindisi. This port city has been defined as the "Gateway to the East" and was perhaps the most important port of call for Greece and the East before the rise of Venice during the Middle Ages. The area is also renowned for its olive oil, which is definitely worth a taste. With its 60 million olive trees, the region used to produce up to 50% of Italy's olive oil, but in the past 10 years years, a devastating bacterium has infected and killed over 21 million trees, many of which were several centuries old.

We have come to the end of the Appian Way. This distinction was marked appropriately in the city by two Roman columns, one of which collapsed in 1528. And let me leave you with a little cliffhanger. Look for a future challenge that will explore the Via Francigena of the South, along with the Via Appia Traiana variant.

✱ Read the FINAL book of a series (share series name) OR
✱ Read a book with the words OLIVE OIL in its text (share the text) OR
✱ Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in GATEWAY TO THE EAST (three word minimum).
