Formed in Dallas, Texas in 1989, The Chicks were founded by Laura Lynch on bass, Robin Lynn Macy on guitar, and multi-instrumental sisters Martie and Emily Erwin and all four on vocals. The original band name, The Dixie Chicks, was taken from the album Dixie Chicken by Lowell George. Originally, the band played mainly bluegrass and country standard and used cowgirl costumes. In 1990, The Chicks were able to record their first studio album, Thank Heavens for Dale Evans.

Their second album, Little Ol’ Cowgirl came out in 1992 and featured a more contemporary country sound. Macy was not pleased with the sound and left the band to focus on her own music. One of the session musicians from the album recommended his daughter, Natalie Maines, to replace Macy. Maines was an accomplished musician and had won a scholarship to the Berklee College of Music. A review of their show from 1992 states that label executives will be kicking themselves as “…these Chicks have what it takes to make the big time…”.

The band continued to struggle to find a major record label to support them, and their fan base wasn’t much beyond Texas and Nashville. They had a new manager who was able to sign a developmental deal with Sony Music in mid-1995. Lynch was the lead singer on the band’s third album, Shouldn’t a Told You That, but soon after the record label deal Lynch left the band so that only three members remained. The band updated their sound as well as their look. Eventually, their deal with Sony was extended and they released the single “I Can Love You Better” and reached the Top 10 on American country music charts. Their next album, Wide Open Spaces was released on January 23, 1998 and several of their singles reached first place on the country charts, including “There’s Your Trouble.”

Thereafter and until present day, the three main artists of The Chicks are Emily Burns Strayer, born 1972, and her sister, Martha “Martie” Maguire, born 1969, with Natalie Maines, the last member to join, being born in 1974. Strayer was born in Massachusetts & Maguire was born in Pennsylvania, but both were raised in Texas with their two other sisters. Strayer has been married twice and has a daughter named Violet. Maguire was married twice and has three children, including a set of twins, with her second husband. She has been very open about her struggles with fertility. Maines was married twice.

By 1998, The Chicks sold more CDs than all other country music groups combined. They joined Sheryl Crow and Sarah McLachlan and other female musicians on the all-female touring Lillith Fair. In 2001, The Chicks has a dispute with their record label, alleging that Sony had used fraudulent accounting practices. Eventually they settled. Their next album, Home was a departure from their previous sounds. In 2003, during a performance in England, Maines told the audience they did not support the invasion of Iraq and were ashamed of then President George W. Bush, also a Texan. Those remarks triggered a backlash in the United States. In 2006, they released the single, “Not Ready to Make Nice.”

In the mid-2000s, the band took a hiatus and sisters Maguire and Strayer released new music without Maines under the name Court Yard Hounds. They also took a fourteen-year break between albums, with their most recent album, Gaslighter which came out in 2020. The Chicks formally changed their name in 2020. They have won numerous awards and honors and have had a lasting impact on country music.

Formed in Dallas, Texas in 1989, The Chicks were founded by Laura Lynch on bass, Robin Lynn Macy on guitar, and multi-instrumental sisters Martie and Emily Erwin and all four on vocals. The original band name, The Dixie Chicks, was taken from the album Dixie Chicken by Lowell George. Originally, the band played mainly bluegrass and country standard and used cowgirl costumes. In 1990, The Chicks were able to record their first studio album, Thank Heavens for Dale Evans.

Their second album, Little Ol’ Cowgirl came out in 1992 and featured a more contemporary country sound. Macy was not pleased with the sound and left the band to focus on her own music. One of the session musicians from the album recommended his daughter, Natalie Maines, to replace Macy. Maines was an accomplished musician and had won a scholarship to the Berklee College of Music. A review of their show from 1992 states that label executives will be kicking themselves as “…these Chicks have what it takes to make the big time…”.

The band continued to struggle to find a major record label to support them, and their fan base wasn’t much beyond Texas and Nashville. They had a new manager who was able to sign a developmental deal with Sony Music in mid-1995. Lynch was the lead singer on the band’s third album, Shouldn’t a Told You That, but soon after the record label deal Lynch left the band so that only three members remained. The band updated their sound as well as their look. Eventually, their deal with Sony was extended and they released the single “I Can Love You Better” and reached the Top 10 on American country music charts. Their next album, Wide Open Spaces was released on January 23, 1998 and several of their singles reached first place on the country charts, including “There’s Your Trouble.”

Thereafter and until present day, the three main artists of The Chicks are Emily Burns Strayer, born 1972, and her sister, Martha “Martie” Maguire, born 1969, with Natalie Maines, the last member to join, being born in 1974. Strayer was born in Massachusetts & Maguire was born in Pennsylvania, but both were raised in Texas with their two other sisters. Strayer has been married twice and has a daughter named Violet. Maguire was married twice and has three children, including a set of twins, with her second husband. She has been very open about her struggles with fertility. Maines was married twice.

By 1998, The Chicks sold more CDs than all other country music groups combined. They joined Sheryl Crow and Sarah McLachlan and other female musicians on the all-female touring Lillith Fair. In 2001, The Chicks has a dispute with their record label, alleging that Sony had used fraudulent accounting practices. Eventually they settled. Their next album, Home was a departure from their previous sounds. In 2003, during a performance in England, Maines told the audience they did not support the invasion of Iraq and were ashamed of then President George W. Bush, also a Texan. Those remarks triggered a backlash in the United States. In 2006, they released the single, “Not Ready to Make Nice.”

In the mid-2000s, the band took a hiatus and sisters Maguire and Strayer released new music without Maines under the name Court Yard Hounds. They have won numerous awards and honors and have had a lasting impact on country music.

Formed in Dallas, Texas in 1989, The Chicks were founded by Laura Lynch on bass, Robin Lynn Macy on guitar, and multi-instrumental sisters Martie and Emily Erwin and all four on vocals. The original band name, The Dixie Chicks, was taken from the album Dixie Chicken by Lowell George. Originally, the band played mainly bluegrass and country standard and used cowgirl costumes. In 1990, The Chicks were able to record their first studio album, Thank Heavens for Dale Evans.

Their second album, Little Ol’ Cowgirl came out in 1992 and featured a more contemporary country sound. Macy was not pleased with the sound and left the band to focus on her own music. One of the session musicians from the album recommended his daughter, Natalie Maines, to replace Macy. Maines was an accomplished musician and had won a scholarship to the Berklee College of Music. A review of their show from 1992 states that label executives will be kicking themselves as “…these Chicks have what it takes to make the big time…”.

The band continued to struggle to find a major record label to support them, and their fan base wasn’t much beyond Texas and Nashville. They had a new manager who was able to sign a developmental deal with Sony Music in mid-1995. Lynch was the lead singer on the band’s third album, Shouldn’t a Told You That, but soon after the record label deal Lynch left the band so that only three members remained. The band updated their sound as well as their look. Eventually, their deal with Sony was extended and they released the single “I Can Love You Better” and reached the Top 10 on American country music charts. Their next album, Wide Open Spaces was released on January 23, 1998 and several of their singles reached first place on the country charts, including “There’s Your Trouble.”

Thereafter and until present day, the three main artists of The Chicks are Emily Burns Strayer, born 1972, and her sister, Martha “Martie” Maguire, born 1969, with Natalie Maines, the last member to join, being born in 1974. Strayer was born in Massachusetts & Maguire was born in Pennsylvania, but both were raised in Texas with their two other sisters. Strayer has been married twice and has a daughter named Violet. Maguire was married twice and has three children, including a set of twins, with her second husband. She has been very open about her struggles with fertility. Maines was married twice.

By 1998, The Chicks sold more CDs than all other country music groups combined. They joined Sheryl Crow and Sarah McLachlan and other female musicians on the all-female touring Lillith Fair. In 2001, The Chicks has a dispute with their record label, alleging that Sony had used fraudulent accounting practices. Eventually they settled. Their next album, Home was a departure from their previous sounds. In 2003, during a performance in England, Maines told the audience they did not support the invasion of Iraq and were ashamed of then President George W. Bush, also a Texan. Those remarks triggered a backlash in the United States. In 2006, they released the single, “Not Ready to Make Nice.”

In the mid-2000s, the band took a hiatus and sisters Maguire and Strayer released new music without Maines under the name Court Yard Hounds. They also took a fourteen-year break between albums, with their most recent album, Gaslighter which came out in 2020. The Chicks formally changed their name in 2020. They have won numerous awards and honors and have had a lasting impact on country music.
