🎤 At the age of 12, Aaliyah was signed to a record label and introduced to recording artist and producer R. Kelly. When Aaliyah auditioned for the Detroit High School for the Fine and Performing Arts, she sang the song “Ave Maria” in Italian. Despite the pressure and time constraints of all her performances and commitments, she maintained a 4.0 grade point average while in high school.
In 1994 her debut album Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number was released under her mononym “Aaliyah.” The album did very well, selling 38,000 copies in its first week. Her first singles included “Back & Forth,” a cover of the Isley Brothers’ “At Your Best (You are Love),” and the album’s title track, “Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number.”

🎤 Aaliyah began to work on her second film, Queen of the Damned, in which she played the role of the ancient vampire, Queen Akasha. The filming of both movies caused her third album, Aaliyah to take longer to complete and it wasn’t released until 2001. After filming a video for her song “Rock the Boat,” in the Bahamas, Aaliyah and eight others boarded a plane for Miami. The plane took off and rose 200 feet before plunging and crashing. She has been credited with helping to revolutionize the genres of R&B, pop, and hip hop in her brief lifetime. Her nicknames include “Princess of R&B” and “Queen of Urban Pop.” When she was five, her parents moved her and her brother Rashad to Detroit, Michigan.

🎤 From an early age, Aaliyah participated in voice lessons and performed at weddings, church choir and charity events. Her mother was a vocalist and her uncle, Barry Hankerson, was an entertainment lawyer who had been married to Gladys Knight. As a child, Aaliyah traveled with Knight and was able to appear in commercials and television programs. She appeared on Star Search at the age of ten. She also had several pet animals growing up, including ducks, snakes and iguanas.

🎤 At the age of 12, Aaliyah was signed to a record label and introduced to recording artist and producer R. Kelly. When Aaliyah auditioned for the Detroit High School for the Fine and Performing Arts, she sang the song “Ave Maria” in Italian. Despite the pressure and time constraints of all her performances and commitments, she maintained a 4.0 grade point average while in high school.
In 1994 her debut album Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number was released under her mononym “Aaliyah.” The album did very well, selling 38,000 copies in its first week. Her first singles included “Back & Forth,” a cover of the Isley Brothers’ “At Your Best (You are Love),” and the album’s title track, “Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number.”

🎤 In 1996 Aaliyah moved to Atlantic Records and released her sophomore album, One in a Million with the hit single “If Your Girl Only Knew.” In 1997 she graduated from high school where she majored in drama. She began her acting career as well by playing herself in the television series New York Undercover. She also participated in benefit concerts, special events, and contributed to film soundtracks. In 1999, she landed her first big-screen acting role in Romeo Must Die.

🎤 Aaliyah began to work on her second film, Queen of the Damned, in which she played the role of the ancient vampire, Queen Akasha. The filming of both movies caused her third album, Aaliyah to take longer to complete and it wasn’t released until 2001. After filming a video for her song “Rock the Boat,” in the Bahamas, Aaliyah and eight others boarded a plane for Miami. The plane took off and rose 200 feet before plunging and crashing. Aaliyah died instantly on August 24, 2001. She was 22. Though her death cut short her rises to stardom, Aaliyah’s impact still managed to be far reaching.
