Kathleen | 401 comments I don't read much non-fiction, but these were pretty good - I gave both four stars.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1426 comments I read The Nakano Thrift Shop by Hiromi Kawakami, translated from the Japanese by Allison Markin Powell. A quirky novel about a young woman working in a thrift shop. I just didn't get the why or wherefore of this novel and much preferred her other novel, Strange Weather in Tokyo, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Rosh ~catching up slowly~ (roshreviews) | 425 comments One More Mountain by Deborah Ellis
One More Mountain (Breadwinner, #5) by Deborah Ellis
The fifth book of the acclaimed Breadwinner series, a set of MG books talking of a little girl in Afghanistan. An eye-opening story, but best read in series order.

Tweedledum (tweedledum) | 2168 comments What Makes This Book So Great: Re-Reading the Classics of Science Fiction & Fantasy. I’ve been dipping into this for 2 years now and finally finished it. Jo Walton has inspired me to read a whole lot more sci-fi.

A slightly flawed MG book on a very important and oft ignored topic of history.

Tatyana | 114 comments Just finished The Lake House by Kate Morton
3.5 stars (4)
It's a good story, plot was interesting, but way too stretched. The story would have been much more enjoyable if it was faster paced.
It also took me 1/3 of the book to start understanding relations of the characters to each other or to a general storyline. At times, time periods were not distinct in the story, so I had to go back to see what part of character's life author is writing. Ending was worth the long read.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1426 comments I re-read Independent People by Halldór Laxness; translated from the Icelandic by J.A. Thompson. Laxness won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1955.
The novel is an absolute masterpiece. I re-read it to prepare for an upcoming group read.

Song of Freedom, Song of Dreams (Novel in Verse) by Shari Green
A novel-in-verse set during the 1989 protests in Berlin. I didn't find the poetic elements impressive but the story is good.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1426 comments I read Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner. A quiet, meditative book about the enduring, four-decades long friendship between two couples. This is the second novel I've read by Wallace Stegner. There is a subdued quality about his writing that I really love.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1426 comments I read another Claire Keegan, her collection of three short stories: So Late in the Day: Stories of Women and Men.
Three stories illustrating varying degrees of male misogyny. The stories are as good as her novels. I'm a big fan of her writing.
