message 60: by Lisa Bianca (last edited Feb 19, 2022 11:49PM) (new)

Lisa Bianca (lisabianca) | 7 comments I hope Brenda doesn't mind me answering on her behalf, it's one of my favourite genres but it is very broad. Its basically a book that has elements that are imagined, do not exist in the real world, now or in the past.
So supernatural, futuristic, magical, science fiction, dystopia, fantasy, horror, superhero tales or alternative history.

message 61: by Trevor (new)

Trevor | 643 comments Denise MF wrote: "hi Brenda & group

I had the same question and Brenda advised me:

"It's an umbrella which covers fantasy, science fiction, magical realism - all those sorts of books :)"

message 62: by Brenda, Aussie Authors Queen (new)

Brenda | 79969 comments Mod
Thanks Lisa and Trevor. The reason we say 'speculative fiction' is the broadness of the umbrella. It's easier for readers than if we stipulated fantasy, or science fiction for example. Saying Speculative Fiction gives you all a broader choice :)

Denise, The Wizards of Once has shelves for middle grade fiction, also Young Adult and fantasy - so you're able to read it under YA or fantasy, whichever you choose. It's got plenty of pages too, so qualifies there!
