Thanks for the question! It was a combination of learning about the concept of the Grand Tour, my love of tropey adventure novels, and my frustration with the fact that both western historical narratives and said tropey adventure stories were mostly populated by straight white cis people because of "historical accuracy." So I decided to write the exact kind of book I'd want to read, but with character that are usually left out of historical fiction narratives :) (less)

The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue Coloring Contest!

Gentle Readers. It has been a time since I used this blog because, when writing is your job, it’s hard to get yourself excited about doing more writing in your off time.

And even now, I only return not to amuse you with one of my comical stories about fixing my violin or putting out fires in the city of Boston, but rather a super amazing contest for my new book, The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Vi

"Yes you can, it's just less great and less hot," said Gideon."

Harrow the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir
“It had bewildered her, back at Canaan House, how the whole of her always seemed to come back to Gideon. For one brief and beautiful space of time, she had welcomed it: that microcosm of eternity between forgiveness and the slow, uncomprehending agony of the fall. Gideon rolling up her shirt sleeves. Gideon dappled in shadow, breaking promises. One idiot with a sword and an asymmetrical smile had proved to be Harrow’s end: her apocalypse swifter than the death of the Emperor and the sun with him.”

“God bless the book people for their boundless knowledge absorbed from having words instead of friends.”
Mackenzi Lee, The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue

“We are not broken things, neither of us. We are cracked pottery mended with laquer and flakes of gold, whole as we are, complete unto each other. Complete and worthy and so very loved.”
Mackenzi Lee, The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue

“We're not courting trouble," I say. "Flirting with it, at most.”

“I get it. The things you hope for the most are the things that destroy you in the end.”
David Levithan

“The true hero is flawed. The true test of a champion is not whether he can triumph, but whether he can overcome obstacles - preferably of his own making - in order to triumph.”
Garth Stein, The Art of Racing in the Rain

“She had a sadness that was so deep, but it still could turn to light in a second, and when I saw her smile I wondered what it would be like to make her smile. I thought... I thought it would be like the discovery of smiling.”
Laini Taylor, Daughter of Smoke & Bone

“The world turns and the world spins, the tide runs in and the tide runs out, and there is nothing in the world more beautiful and more wonderful in all its evolved forms than two souls who look at each other straight on. And there is nothing more woeful and soul-saddening than when they are parted...everything in the world rejoices in the touch, and everything in the world laments in the losing.”
Gary D. Schmidt, Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy

“To live every day as if it had been stolen from death, that is how I would like to live. To feel the joy of life, as Eve felt the joy of life. To separate oneself from the burden, the angst, the anguish that we all encounter every day. To say I am alive, I am wonderful, I am. I am. That is something to aspire to.”
Garth Stein, The Art of Racing in the Rain
