🎧 “It’s Too Late”: 2-5 tasks
🎧 “You’ve Got a Friend”: 6-10 tasks
🎧 Tapestry: 11-15 tasks

🎧 Born Carole Klein in Brooklyn, New York in 1942, Carole’s parents met on an elevator at Brooklyn College in 1936. Carole showed an early aptitude for music and learned how to play the piano from her mother around the age of three. Starting kindergarten at the age of four, Carole also skipped first grade after showing exceptional skills with words and numbers. While attending James Madison High School in the 1950s, she formed her first band called the Co-Sines.

1. Read a book where a character plays an instrument OR read a book with a child as a character.
2. Read a book that takes place in New York OR read a book tagged historical fiction or music.
3. Read a book by author with the letters C & K in their name OR read a book that takes place on a college campus.

🎧 Eventually Carole changed her name to Carole King. While attending Queens College, she met Gerry Goffin, who became her songwriting partner and eventually husband. They married in a Jewish ceremony in 1959, having daughter Louise in 1960 (eventually having a second child together). They both quit college and got day jobs while writing songs together in the evening. King & Goffin joined Al Nevins and Don Kirshner’s Aldon Music company and composed hundreds of songs together. Their first hit was in 1961 with “Will You Love Me Tomorrow” performed by the Shirelles. King was not yet 20. Throughout the Sixties, King & Goffin continued to write a string a hits and now classic songs for a variety of artists, including “One Fine Day” for the Chiffons and “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman for Aretha Franklin.

4. Read a book a teenage protagonist OR read a book where a character has an alias.
5. Read a book with a wedding OR read a book that is considered a classic or a “hit” (you decide). The Radetzky March (1932) by Joseph Roth (1894-1939). Finished March 15, 2021. If a book published prior to 1972 (i.e., 50 or more years old) qualifies as a classic, then it's a classic.

🎧 By 1968 King & Goffin were divorced and she had moved to Los Angeles. She formed a musical trio with Charles Larkey, her future husband, and Danny Kortchmar, but she was reluctant to perform on stage and eventually the group disbanded. In the early 1970s, King meet James Taylor and Joni Mitchell. Taylor collaborated with King for her first solo album, Writer. King also play keyboards for one of BB King’s albums.

6. Read a book with a divorce OR read a book where a character is shy or has stage fright.
7. Read a book that takes place in the 1950s, 1960s, or 1970s OR read a standalone.

🎧 In 1971, King released Tapestry which featured new compositions as wells as reinterpretations of “Will You Love Me Tomorrow” and “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.” Tapestry was a success, winning four Grammy Awards including the Song of the Year with “You’ve Got a Friend.” King was the first female to win that category.

8. Read a book with a female protagonist or written by a female OR read a book that has been re-released or has multiple editions (hardcover, paperback, or audio).
9. Read a book where the title begins with a letter in TAPESTRY OR read a book tagged or considered a retelling.

🎧 King went on to release eleven albums between 1970-1979. In the 1980s, she released four different albums, and she and Goffin were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1987. The 80s also brought about a change with her moving from Ode Records to Atlantic. During this time, she also wrote and performed several songs for movie soundtracks, including “Now and Forever” for the movie A League of Their Own. Altogether, King has released 25 solo albums, written or co-written hundreds of songs, and received number awards and honors.

10. Read a book from a series that has four books OR read a book that has a character that is a writer.
11. Read a book that involves baseball or has a baseball item on the cover OR read a book that has the words NOW or FOREVER in the title OR read a book that has the numbers 2 and 5 in the page count. 12. Read a book that has won an award OR read a book that has over 1987 ratings. Tell us the number.

🎧 Over time, King has collaborated with or written songs for a wide range of musicians from Eric Clapton to Mariah Carey. She has also made appearances in several movies and TV shows, such as A League of Their Own and Gilmore Girls, eventually earning a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. King has been married four different times and has four children. After relocating to Idaho in the late 70s, she became involved in environmental issues. Additionally, in 2013, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, a musical about her life and career came out and was performed on Broadway.

Jim Townsend | 12 comments What about books finished ON March 15? If the classic (published 1932) The Radetzky March by Joseph Roth (1894-1939), which I finished on that date, counts; then it not only completes task #5, but at 352 pages, also completes task #11.

On March 31, 2021 I finished The Name of the Rose (1980) by Umberto Eco, which at 512 pages, also fulfills task #11.
