Yes and also the book Abandon is pretty damn creepy.
WendyB wrote: "The Wayward Pines series is so good. I heartily recommend it!"yessss, i have it on my list already. i'm super excited to read it since i've heard such good things; think i'm gonna add it to my june tbr!
I read Lovecraft this week for the first time. The Call of Cthulhu and H.P. Lovecraft's the Dunwich Horror. I also finished Locke & Key, Vol. 1: Welcome to Lovecraft which was excellent, Stephen King's Joyland, and I listened to the audiobook of Tales from the Gas Station: Volume Two.
So, all in all, it was a great reading week for me :)
Just finished The Terrible Thing that Happened by Carlton Mellick;https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5...
This was the horror book I so needed right now. One of the, if not the best books McMahon has written yet.
Just finished One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, my thoughts on this one.https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Thanks for the review, I've been thinking of checking it out.
There's a new book that I got a preview copy of which comes out on Amazon tomorrow called REALMS, Elven Gold by Layne Warby. This would look amazing on the big screen. My kids and I loved it. Check it out people as its for the kid in all of us
I just finished this one:The Devil's Equinox by John Everson - it was really good!

Recently listened to
and I enjoyed the story, but I think the narrator ruined it a bit for me. It sounded like a fun story but he made it pretty dull!Full review here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
BrotherStarted off strong but I felt it lagged a bit. The reveal helped a little but I was sort of disappointed by the ending.
Just finished Needful Things by Stephen King, my thoughts on this one...https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Frozen Hell
I think for a piece of science-fiction from the 1930ies, this classic has aged very, very well.

So noted, Alan! Added.
I finished reading Day Zero
by C. Robert Cargill. It was really good. Imagine a world where AI/robots have been created to take care of everything. A domestic to keep your home clean. A caregiver to take care of your children. And so on. Then imagine that something happens and all of the AIs turn on humanity. And the one caregiver AI that does NOT.
Finished Spook Lights: Southern Gothic Horror by Eden Royce;https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
I finished two over the weekend.
which was an incredible crime novel and will be in my top ten of the year, for sure. And
which was a very good collection.
I have recently finished, almost back-to-back, two of the longer novels I’ve read in a while.
Michael McDowell: Blackwater: The Complete Caskey Family Saga
This is a ridiculously good book.
T.E.D. Klein: The Ceremonies
This is also a ridiculously good book.
J.-H. Rosny aîné: Quest for Fire
Jonathan Eeds, who did this second-ever English translation of the book, apparently plans to re-translate the works of Jules Verne into English and used Rosny's prehistoric adventure as a training exercise, since he didn't feel like he had sufficient language skills yet. Also, this book edition relied heavily on free software-based translations. One coult say the origin history of this edition is a bit extraordinary, but the result is actually very vivid and excellently readable, and by default very close to the French original.
And about Rosny's novel: It was first publshed in 1911, and it passes the test of time.
Just finished Gone to See the River Man by Kristopher Triana;https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/sho...
The Killer Inside Me by Jim Thompson. It’s an oldie but goodie—I didn’t check the date of publication until after finishing and I was surprised by how modern it felt. Lots of Texas-like speech (or is it drawl? I’ve never been there).

Blackwater is one of my all time favorites. Michael McDowell could write about families like no one else, then or since.
Over the weekend I read Gyo
. I didn't care for it as much as Uzumaki but I liked it much more than Tomie.
I finished these up in the last two weeks:Cryptids
Savage Island
They Rise
Lineage
Feeding Grounds
Food: Winner, Winner, Chicken _ _ _ _
Sandgroper
Flesh & Blood

Agreed. It’s fantastically well-written. For long stretches I felt like I was reading a novel by, say, Carson McCullers, or Eudora Welty, or maybe the early Truman Capote. I don’t know why this novel has languished in semi-obscurity. It deserves so much better.

Agreed! I think of it as more of a southern family epic with horrific aspects, rather than a straight out horror novel. That said, there were definitely some real scares and tragedies. McDowell wrote about southern families like no one else.

I've recommended this book to a couple of people as a Southern Gothic, and they both loved it. One of them was a literature professor!

McDowell is one of my favorite authors. I often think what more he would have written if he hadn't passed away so young.
