message 505: by Randy (new)

Randy Money | 432 comments He is, literally, a character in a series of television commercials. They are amusing commercials of young marrieds falling into becoming as staid as their parents. I'm a little surprised they are popular enough to leverage a book, even a (I suppose) book of humor.

I really liked it and I am going to try to read the second book Locked Doors sometime this month as I don't want to lose momentum with the story. :)

Deranged The Shocking True Story of America's Most Fiendish Killer by Harold Schechter

Well, at least Mr. Albert Fish had the one redeeming quality of being a caring parent.

message 511: by Jeff (new)

Jeff McIntosh | 225 comments I have always been amused that Fish was examined by Dr. Wertham..who later wrote "Seduction of the Innocent".....

message 512: by [deleted user] (new)

Yeah, Schechter mentions Wertham's later crusade against comic books as well. Regarding Fish's own media usage, he was apparently an avid reader of Poe and also collected news clippings about Germany's Fritz Haarmann.

You owe it to yourself to read it. It's free download from Amazon. He also has supplementary videos on YOuTube that are hilarious and help you stop from becoming your parents.

The Parker series is the best I've ever read. I want to go back and re-read the first book sometime so if/when you decide to start this series let me know and I'll buddy read it with you.

I read the first one a few years ago and it put me off John Connolly for life, it was such a drainer. So now every time I see people enjoying the series I feel like I missed something haha

The first Parker book is too busy but it does set the stage for all the books that come after it. It was far from my fav of the series. But it all gets so good after that.

Me, too. It was good-ish but, as WendyB said, too busy. Overstuffed, even, though I appreciated his use of the name of the bad guy (which probably should have tipped me off). And my wife had a similar reaction. She went on to read the next of the series, though, and has been addicted ever since.

I suppose I should pick up number two as well. We'll see.

Char | 17459 comments The Charlie Parker series by Connolly and the Matthew Corbett series by McCammon are my two favorites.

It's hard to believe but it is true that the Parker books get better and better.

message 535: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Tucker | 23 comments I read all the Charlie Parker books this year. Love that series blend of supernatural and mystery investigations.

Finished all of Barry Eisler's John Rain series.

One of my favorite books this year was Razorblade Tears. Such a great emotional story about two dads finding justice for the death of their sons.

Agree wholeheartedly. I love the Charlie Parker books and McCammons Matthew Corbett books are fantastic with The Queen of Bedlam and The Providence Rider being my favorites.
I am going to start reading Phil Rickmans Merrily Watkins series this year, being another mystery series with supernatural elements. I've only ever read his stand alone novels, so hope these are as good. We'll see.

I put book two of the Parker series on hold at the library. I decided to give it another go, I didn't care much for the first book.

message 544: by Char (new)

Char | 17459 comments The first was the worst of the bunch, in my humble opinion. At this point, Charlie, Angel, Louis and the Fulci brothers seem like part of my family. Oh, and Moxie, the lawyer. :)

message 545: by Kandice (new)

I finished Children of Demeter on Friday night, I think, and that was very good as well.
