The Unlikely Escape of Uriah Heep by H.G. Parry

Charley Sutherland is a 26-year-old genius in the field of literary criticism. He is also a book "summoner" - he can pull characters and objects from books. Charley has a 30-year-old brother -Rob- a practicing defense lawyer with no summoning abilities. He has known of Charley's ability since childhood and the entire family tries to keep Charley's secret. The story begins with Uriah Heep (con man character from Dickens' David Copperfield) being accidentally summoned by Charley who phones Rob in the middle of the night for help.

I thought that the story was amazingly creative and had much action. The place - Wellington, New Zealand - was well-described and interesting. I loved David Copperfield, so that is why I decided to read this book--I'm not a regular reader of fantasy. The last 100 pages or so were confusing to me with partially developed or disappearing and reappearing worlds and fictional versus "real" characters; maybe the "new world" line would have been easy/routine for a regular reader of magical realism.

I liked the way the dialogue seemed to match the literary characters in style and wording and that the description provided enough detail that a reader would not need to have read the summoned character's home book. Most summoned characters were not from David Copperfield. Frankenstein, Sherlock Holmes, the Hound of the Baskervilles, Mr. Darcy (five of them), Heathcliff, Matilda Wormwood, Lancelot, the Artful Dodger, and Dorian Gray all make appearances, as does Charles Dickens. Lots of action and surprises and much history and development of the brothers' relationship. Recommended!

Tracks by Louise Erdrich

Set between 1912-1924 in North Dakota, "Tracks" is chronologically the earliest novel in the "Love Medicine" series about some Anishinaabe families. They are caught between the traditions of the indigenous people and the white culture. The book has two narrators--Nanapush, a tribal elder, and Pauline, a mixed-breed orphan whose accounts of events are unreliable. The book opens with tribal numbers being diminished by influenza and consumption, spread by soldiers returning home from World War I.

The Anishinaabe traditionally lived off the plants, fish, and wildlife from their land. but they could not afford the high government taxes on the land. Some land was sold to loggers in order to survive, but clear cutting the trees drove away the wildlife. Hunger, especially during the winter, was a terrible problem.

The tribe was used to trading goods and cooperating as a group before white culture moved in. Later, each family had to use money and try individually to hold on to their plot of land. Eventually, most of the land was sold to the government or lumber companies.

Religion plays a large role in the book. Fleur is a vigorous woman with strong ties to her tribal roots, and spirits in the woods and lake. Fleur is also a skilled hunter, forager, and herbalist. Pauline, in contrast, rejects her native American roots and embraces Christianity. She joins a convent but spends her time in self-flagellation instead of doing good deeds. She exhibits signs of madness as she fights with the Devil, and causes conflict within the tribe.

Author Louise Erdrich weaves together family stories, indigenous traditions, tribal conflicts, and the influence of white culture. There are interesting, quirky characters that will show up again in her "Love Medicine" series of books.

Thank you for your honesty about its being a children's book. But, good news! Our rule is about its being shelved as such at the Brooklyn Public Library and they don't have this title. That means all styles allowed. I have added it to 10.4 Valentines for the 5-point combo. If you see it also fits somewhere else let us know.

The Shoemaker's Holiday by Thomas Dekker

I'm glad I read this play although I can't say that I enjoyed it very much. This is a romantic comedic Elizabethan play published in 1599. I'm glad I read it as a historical piece but it is so bogged down in ancient slang and wordplay, that I could not enjoy it as I'm sure it was intended. Thankfully, the edition I read was chock full of footnotes to explain things...like "laced mutton" was a double entendre referring to prostitutes. Many other cryptic references were left unexplained. One character's speech was either Dutch or a Dutch-inspired English accent....I couldn't tell...and his passages went unknown to me. Nevertheless, the premise of the play was that a father objected to the character who his daughter wished to marry creating much subterfuge. The character Firk says everything with a sexual double entendre...and I'm sure if I understood, it would be hilarious. Unfortunately I didn't understand until I read the Wikipedia synopsis.

The Memory Police by Yōko Ogawa

Intense. Amazing. Fantastic writing. It’s always a shame I can’t leave a review of 4 words. In the first third or so of this book I found it so intense I had to stop, jump up and wander around the house a little just to clear my head. ‘It’s ok, I’m still in boring old Fonthill.’ Then I was able to buckle down.

This is tagged as a sci-fi, dystopia. Which it is, but it’s also so much more. It’s about memory, memories, human relationships. The story takes place in an isolated (Japanese?) island where extreme totalitarianism reigns. Things disappear and people quite quickly forget they even existed. The premise is subtle of course, because in reality we do forget things that we haven’t seen in twenty or more years.

I would definitely recommend this book; and would go as far as recommending it to those who don’t normally think of sci-fi as their thing. 5*

Schindler's List by Thomas Keneally

This is the unlikely but (lightly fictionalized) true story of the German factory-owner Oskar Schindler who saved the lives of over 1,000 Polish Jewish people during the holocaust, not by hiding them or smuggling them out of the country, but by employing them in plain sight in his factories even if they were too weak to work, and wining, dining and bribing SS officers so that they weren't shipped out to Auschwitz along with all the other Jewish inhabitants of Krakow (or in the case of one group of women, getting them out of Auschwitz after they'd been transported in). It's a terrible story because of what happened to all of those he couldn't save - there are parts where it seems like one long catalogue of murders and beatings and starvation - but the risks Schindler and his workers took, and his and their success against the odds, are jawdropping.

I saw the movie when it came out in the 90s but I'd never read the book. Obviously it is far from cheerful and perhaps a strange choice of audiobook for cold, dark, virus-ridden January days, but it seemed to fit.

Information Received by E.R. Punshon

Rich Sir Christopher Clarke is shot dead in his billiard room, while the safe in his study lies open and empty. PC Bobby Owen, on duty at the gate, inveigles himself off the beat and into the CID’s investigation.

This is the first in the Bobby Owen series of mysteries by E R Punshon, who had a sudden hit with it after churning out other genre fiction in the past. Dorothy Sayers gave it a rave review, and from the introduction to this edition it sounds like Punshon and his publishers were amazed – so am I. It’s enjoyable, but (view spoiler) there were few surprises. But there was more atmosphere and characterization to it than in some lesser-known Golden Age mysteries.

The Mysterious Affair at Styles by Agatha Christie

Christie is always a comfort read for me. After ‘The Memory Police’ I needed something lighter and fun. Somehow, I didn’t have this novel in my collection until recently so I haven’t read and reread it repeatedly, which made it fresh.

This is Christie’s debut novel. It is also Hercule Poirot and Arthur Hastings debut – oh, and Inspector Japp (whose name is Jimmy! who knew?). It is set during WW1, Hastings has been invalided out (and is invited to stay with friends at Styles) and Poirot is part of a group of Belgian refugees billeted in the village where Styles is located.

A death occurs at Styles and Poirot is asked to investigate. This is where the fun begins – we are introduced to Hastings and his open and innocent countenance, his jumping to conclusions, and his fatal attraction to beautiful women. Poirot is quite lively here, gadding about more than he does in future novels. However, he is still Poirot – charming, quick on the uptake, playing his cards close to his chest, and supremely confident in his abilities.

I thought Christie laid the mystery (mysteries) out well, and she made the characters interesting. It is well worth reading if you like Golden Age mysteries and an impressive debut. 4.5*

Lettice and Lovage: A Comedy by Peter Shaffer

This was a quick, easy and pleasurable play to read. Lettice Douffet is a tour guide in a fairly unremarkable Georgian-style home in England when she gets fired by Lotte because she keeps embellishing the history. Lotte visits Lettice to assist her in finding a new job.... but in the process gets drawn into Lettice's imagination and play-acting. Harmless enough until...well, until something happens to potentially expose their strange private behaviors. When staged, Maggie Smith originally played the role of Lettice....and I can imagine that she dryly played it for all it was worth...and I imagine many laughs were earned. Four stars.

Crossing the Mangrove by Maryse Condé

This story takes place entirely on the island of Guadeloupe. It is the kind of book where multiple voices and perspectives are presented around a single event, in this case the funeral of Sancher. And the perspectives reveal much about the dead man, each other, and the community in which they live.

It did not particularly excite me. It was easy enough to read with the characters being distinct and contradicting each other, as people do. They spanned a variety of economic classes, skin colors, ages and genders. Minimal dialect and non-English words were used, with footnotes where needed. It was a window into another culture, which was reasonably interesting.

I did end up disappointed to never find out about what was going on with Sancher, but it was clear that the removal of objective truth, and the interior truth of the dead man, was a significant part of the point.

The Shadowed Sun (Dreamblood #2) by N.K. Jemisin

Review
The description of this second book is basically a giveaway of the ending for book 1. And in a way, since there is a second book, the ending of this one wasn't that surprising either.

10 years have passed since the end of book 1 and in this sequel, different protagonists take the stage. A prince in exile and a woman Sharer-Apprentice (which was not heard of) found themselves thrown together to save their home physically and psychically.

I felt that I had to drag myself through reading this novel; there isn't any particular thing that I didn't like. It's just that I didn't find it interesting enough. It is definitely not as intriguing as The Broken Earth trilogy.

In Seven, we meet a New York family about to travel to India for an extended stay (a professional trip for the husband, and a break between jobs for the wife, plus a chance for their seven year old to experience the ancestral homeland and meet the extended family). The book explores the intersection of traditions with changing values, female genital mutilation and its impact on the community and the women, and notions of identity. This is a powerful read and I highly recommend it.

Selected Short Stories by William Faulkner

During the early 20th Century, William Faulkner wrote some wonderful short stories about the South. "A Rose for Emily," a gothic story about a recluse in a changing Southern town, is one of Faulkner's best. "Barn Burning" shows a boy who has to decide whether to follow his conscience or remain loyal to his family while knowing that his father is an arsonist. "Dry September" is an especially well-written story about racial prejudice. Be aware that Faulkner does use the language of that era regarding African-Americans, but he is showing the injustice toward them.

Faulkner also writes stories about wars and their aftermath--the American Civil War, World War I, and World War II. "Two Soldiers" is narrated by a young boy who wanted to follow his brother into the army after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. "Mountain Victory" is set just after the Civil War ended.

Faulkner's short stories are a good introduction to this Southern author. Some feature characters that also have roles in his Yoknapatawpha County novels. Most of the stories in this collection were previously published in the Saturday Evening Post, Scribners, or American Mercury so this is a high quality collection.

Murder and Mendelssohn (Phryne Fisher #20) by Kerry Greenwood
1929

Review
Phryne Fisher is at it again. Solving murders, joining in revelries, encountering gorgeous men, and this time, a little bit of matchmaking. Well, the matchmaking sounds like a lot of work because the guy was a little more than clueless. Well-tensioned plot with unguessable ending (not even for our intrepid detective), Murder & Mendelssohn is a lovely romp through Melbourne streets.

Note: I feel that Jack Robinson is so different from the first time that we encounter him in Cocaine Blues though... and he's definitely NOT the Jack Robinson of the tv series. I'm a little thrown by this...
