Task 05: Read over 750 pages in books about the same profession (law enforcement)

Book: Principles of Spookology

Principles of Spookology (The Spectral Files, #2) by S.E. Harmon

332 pages (Kindle 1st Edition)

How it qualifies: "Rain Christiansen, former FBI agent and current cold case detective..." (précis)

Date completed:  09/29

Rating/Review: 4⭐ This book is delightful! Really, now I get it why people love this so much. The things that I liked in the first book is still here, but better, and my issues specially with the mystery part of the story are mostly gone. Even the romance that I really didn't care about, is so much sweeter here. Definitly an improvement.

Review: The writing was good. Mace & Colby started on a rough foot, but they were undeniably attracted to each other.

The thing is Mace came off as a bit incompetent for an FBI agent, and Colby didn't come across as smart as I thought she would be considering what she does for a living.

I also felt like Mace was let off the hook too easily for my liking. There definitely should have at least been an apology.

Shan ~A~ | 1830 comments Task 6: (29). Read over 750 pages in books about the same profession, teams decide which profession.

Please include the selected profession in your completion posts. Professions such as law enforcement officer or musician are fine. Just don't try to pass off both a rancher and a chef as in the food industry - they are just too far apart. Remember to use the first edition Kindle page count!

Rookie Move (Brooklyn Bruisers, #1) by Sarina Bowen

Fits: Sarina Bowen on FAC list
Pages: 336 pages
Read: 10/1/2020
Stars: 4(3.5)

My first Sarina Bowen book. I'm a hockey fan and I forgive that they tied with my team the Boston Bruins. I might have had to DNF the book if they have beaten Boston. LOL. I did feel that for a contemporary romance, they felt a little young to be going for the lifetime commitment. I'll probably read more of the series when I'm in the mood for something that isn't overly serious.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments I'm a little confused as to how missing a task works. If we don't have all our books done tomorrow do we fall behind other teams? I reread the game posts and I can't tell if there's winning team at the end or not. I'm going out of town the 9th-11th and I might not get a book in that weekend. It will depend on what the tasks are and what time they get posted and if I can squeeze some Kindle reading in while gone. I'm taking that Friday off even though we don't leave until Saturday since I have vacation time to use. So I might be able to get a task posted on Thursday in before I go.

message 166: by Michaele (last edited Oct 01, 2020 10:08AM) (new)

Michaele | 6545 comments We will fall behind pretty quickly, there is a winning team at the end, the team who finishes the most tasks win. At the pace we are going we'll probably end up towards the middle. For most tasks people can pass, so like when you are out of town you could pass so the team can keep moving forward.

I don't mind the pace we are going, I just like having the tasks to help me decide what to read next. :)

message 167: by Nayara (new)

Nayara (nayalink) | 630 comments Mary, each team sets its own read rhythm so at the end the one with more tasks completed will win.

Personaly, I'm not to worry with this I'm just looking to have fun and clear a little of my TBR with the tasks.
I'm also leaving on vacation tomorrow, and probably will use a pass depending on the task called while I'm out (you can do this too; in my undestanding we just can't use the pass at the same time; and we can't use it on tasks that states "no pass for thos task")

Nayara (nayalink) | 630 comments About the pass:

"Each teammate will need to participate in each task, but may take a pass for one task during the course of the challenge. For some tasks, no passes will be allowed."

message 170: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments So should we ask Shan to take a pass on the current one so we can get a task tomorrow? (I'm good either way, I can finish a couple non-fiction books while waiting) But I thought I read where someone could fill in but then she has to use her only pass right? Did we miss a task anywhere? I feel like we got one every other day since the start. I'm ok with using my one pass when I go away next weekend. I don't have any other trips planned. I figured I'd wait and see what happened. I'll have my Kindle Fire with me but we're going with 3 other couples.

I will use it if you all want, but I don't have time to read at the same speed as you guys apparently do.

I have to go to work and this week I didn't happen to already have a book going that fit this task.

I work tomorrow and then off Sat and Sun. If you don't want to wait I understand.

message 176: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments There are benefits to being the only one working a different shift than your coworkers so that the phone is covered more hours. The audio book thing is the main one for me. That and being able to wear sweats on Fridays if I want. '

Technically my mother works the same shift as me. But she owns the business and works from home a lot.

message 179: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments That happens to me too sometimes. If it keeps happening then I switch to music until my mind calms down. I can't just sit and listen. I have to be walking, cleaning, filing, shredding papers or something. I also speed it up to 1.2 and sometimes 1.5. Normal speed just seems so slow to me and sometimes they put such long pauses between chapters.

Review: Kira and Jonas. What can I say other than I liked them both.

I did struggle at first because I took Kira's side and I wanted to knock some sense into Jonas's head, but I eventually warmed up to him. By midway through this book I was reading with the dopiest grin on my face (and laughing out loud at moments). The person who stole more heart the most was Vivi. She stole every scene she was was in.

Now more than anything, I'm ready to see how Devney is going to redeemed the "bitch queen" Quinn in her book in this series.

Also, can we get a book for Luke, because I felt kinda bad for the guy, and also Adam and Ethan?

MountainKat | 31599 comments Hey, I just wanted to help clear things up regarding the discussions above. I don't care when you use the pass and more than one person can use it for the same task. Doesn't matter to me. BUT, the task still has to be completed. So if the task is to read 6 book and one or two of you use the pass, the others still have to read 6 books before the next task is assigned.

Though tasks are randomly assigned, I can 'make sure' 😉😉 that you don't get where using the pass it not allowed. So please comment here if that is going to come up while you are away. 😊

As for the team standings, I need to get that updated... The computer has not been the most comfortable for me to use between my hands, neck and shoulders, so I'd been avoiding it. Now that they have fixed the editing issue, I need to make it happen! I will, promise.

message 183: by MountainKat, Moderator (new)

MountainKat | 31599 comments And now, here is Task 8:

59. Read 4 books that are NOT MPG Romance.

Romance can be listed as a tag/genre for the books you choose, but it can't be MPG (Main Page Genre). If the book is new or has few tags and romance may become MPG, taking a screen shot may be advised. You are free to read other genres for this challenge, but your chosen books need to be fiction.

Review: The back and forth between the time of their youth to the time of their adulthood was a bit confusing. It didn't seem like there was much segue, just all of a sudden there would be a change.

There were also times that I felt like the story was more fiction than truth. I guess that is because I'm a fact checker at heart, and I was unable to find out any info about Sheila's husband or her sister's husband since no last names were given. Not that she has a reason to fabricate anything that took place in their lives, and maybe I wasn't looking in the right place.

Either way the main thing is that this story was sad. This woman who deeply loved and looked up to her older sister lost her in such a tragic way. All while dealing with lies and infidelity in her own life.

I guess the saying "truth is stranger than fiction" is a saying for a reason.

I enjoyed this one more than the first. Doreen isn't quite as stupid as she in the first one. I do wish there was more about the mystery and less about her learning how to live on her own on a budget. But overall I find the characters, the animals and stories entertaining.
