Very true, though I love the idea of quality in large quantities.

That's one hell of a fine order, Camillo. A good range of titles.

Aildiin | 130 comments Big order day for me too :
- Descender vol 2 TP
- Uncanny X-Men Omnibus v1
- Gotham Central Omnibus
- Scalped DLX 4
- justice League : Darkseid War Power of the gods.

Received my big X-Men sales order yesterday and I am getting a shipment of french comics ( more recent less known titles) next week so after this I will be quiet for a while....( only incoming I want in May are Fables Deluxe 12 and Kingdom Come Deluxe and I will probably order those on Amazon using my rewards).

Saugata Mukherjee | 180 comments Can anybody comment about the quality of Gotham Central Omnibus, once they get there hands on it? Binding, print, paper quality the usual stuff. I want to buy it, but since it is going to be a huge book have my doubts about the durability of it.
Also very much excited about Stand on Guard :)

I've read "We Stand on Guard" and it felt like an incomplete work for me... hope you like it more.

message 960: by Saugata (new)

Saugata Mukherjee | 180 comments Thanks for the update Bruno.
I will then put buying it on hold and wait for our fellow goodreaders to reach to a consensus ;)
One point of concern, TMNT IDW collection volume 1has a bad reputation in the market regarding it's binding. Hopefully, they have sorted this out by now, but keep an eye out for just in case. And let us know, hiw do you enjoy this particular incarnation of TMNT.

I'm interested in the Darkseid War but not able to pick it up with all the other books coming out right now. I'd love to see the event as an Absolute or DLX. Not sure what the odds are of that though.

XenofoneX | 172 comments I just got in...
The Manhattan Projects Deluxe Edition Vol. 1 & 2. Excellent.
The Manhattan Projects Deluxe Edition, Volume One by Jonathan Hickman The Manhattan Projects Deluxe Edition Vol. 2 by Jonathan Hickman

Patience, by Dan Clowes (a couple weeks ago, excellent book; Donovan did a great review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... ).

Will Eisner's The Spirit: Artist's Edition
This is Eisner at his peak. I was torn between the Jim Steranko Agensts of SHIELD Artist's Edition and this one; both are essentials, but I had to go with The Spirit. This is one of the huge editions - some are smaller - at 15.5 x 22.25-inches. I've got a dozen of these super-sized, >12" x 17"-tall books, and I love'em. The Artist's Editions are the best thing IDW's done, or tied with the Library of American Comic HC reprints, the classic cartoonist artbook/biographies of Alex Toth, Milt Caniff and Al Feldstein, and Darwyn Cooke's Parker books. Locke and Key is second.
Will Eisner's The Spirit Artist's Edition (vol. 1) by Will Eisner

Feldstein: The Mad Life & Fantastic Art of Al Feldstein -- an absolutely excellent art book published by IDW, featuring all of his EC Comics covers for Tales from the Crypt, Weird Science, etc. Very nicely constructed, 9 x 12-inch format, 420 pages on nice, glossy stock.
Feldstein The Mad Life and Fantastic Art of Al Feldstein! by Grant Geissman

Other stuff, including signed & numbered deluxe ltd. editions, French comic albums and artbooks... (view spoiler)

I've heard good things about The King of Flies, one day i was looking the art and looks very much like Charles Burns. Definitely something worth checking out.

Mezzo and Burns both have that razor sharp style with clean lines and heavy spot-blacks, but Mezzo's been developing that style a long time; in some ways, I prefer Mezzo to Burns... but they're tied for first when it comes to favorites, with Guarnido and Killoffer fighting for second and third.

It's definitely worth checking out, as is 'Love in Vain' by Mezzo. I think it's just the French version available for now...

Looks great! never heard of that one, hope gets an english version someday. Which do you think is your favorite book by Burns?

message 966: by XenofoneX (new)

XenofoneX | 172 comments For Charles Burns, and the entire history of sequential art going back to Tintin and Little Nemo in Slumberland as two sentimental exceptions, my pick for 'best ever' is unquestionably...
Black Hole by Charles Burns
'Black Hole' is a perfectly realized artistic and narrative vision, 360 pages of triple distilled brilliance that took a decade to complete... yet the art on page 1 is stylistically identical to page 360. Genius. That's a large dose of personal judgement and melodramatic hyperbole, but... I still think there's some debatably objective merits to the claim. :-)

message 967: by Camilo (new)

Camilo (camilo1292) | 70 comments Eisnein wrote: yet the art on page 1 is stylistically identical to page 360. Genius.""

Totally agree on that. Reaally love Black Hole too. I know the art is amazing but the writing and the pacing on this book is ridiculously good too.

I'm planning to grab his series on X'ed Out, Sugar Skull and The Hive. They all look great as well.

Yeah, I love the Nitnit trilogy as well. It's impossible to get darker than a Black Hole, but... it's dark. The artwork is incredible; it's the first full-color Burns series, and the stylistic shifts throughout correlate with the shift between a paranoid sobriety and a drug-induced dream-state loaded with symbolism. If it's someone who just wants pure entertainment from their comics, and has no time for anything deeper, I wouldn't recommend it. I love reading comics for pure entertainment myself, but I also love comics like the Nitnit trilogy, which is a powerful personal vision that was years in the making. There's room for both.

Dustin Boggs (ramkitty) | 91 comments My leatherbound complete frank miller batman came in. Condition was better than I thought looks new second print but not a big deal, the spine is really stiff. Read 3 chapters in to year one; I like it. The cartoon movie follows near verbatim.

@Dustin. Glad to hear it came in ok. 2nd print isn't bad, I think mine is way past that. They did a nice job on the movie which shows just how good the original book is.

Aildiin | 130 comments Bunch of digital purchases recently.
Taking advantages of Comixology sales to try comics I probably would not be buying in print version.

I grabbed :
Nailbiter vol1 to 4 ( 3.99$ each)
Letter 44 vol 1 and 2 (3.99$ each)
And a bunch of french comics translated in english and going for rl cheap :
- Spin Angels vol1 to 4 (1.99$ each)
- Iron Squad 2 and 3 ( already had 1).

message 978: by Relstuart, Mod+ (new)

Not as impressed with We Stand on Guard as I was hoping to be (book order came in last night). Interesting concept but the characters and motivations were not as developed as they should have been IMHO.

Descender in TPB 2 continues to be really good though there isn't as much content/happening in the second book.

message 982: by Frank (new)

Frank | 170 comments Saugata wrote: "@Frank, how is the Gotham central omnibus. Is the binding/page quality?"

Gotham Central binding a bit thin, not as good as the Marvel titles, although the DC binding has gotten better from the earlier volumes that I have collected.
I like the artwork, and we get all 40 issues in one volume.

message 983: by Saugata (new)

Saugata Mukherjee | 180 comments Thanks @Frank for the update.
It is not looking like, it is going to buckle under its own weight or pages are going to fall off, right?
Marvel has definitely better bindings for omnibuses. Though Absolute editions are a different beast altogether.

message 992: by Aildiin (last edited May 12, 2016 10:57AM) (new)

Aildiin | 130 comments DMZ is a lot better than the Massive ( I read all of DMZ and the first three the Massive TP).
Skip the Massive library edition and buy all 5 DMZ Deluxe editions...

DMZ is by far in my view the best work of Brian Wood.
None of his later work compares ( The Massive is meh, his X-Men were meh, his Conan work terrible, Northlanders had some great issues and some really weak ones too).

message 995: by XenofoneX (new)

XenofoneX | 172 comments I got the Darwyn Cooke news late, and it's absolutely horrible. Such a talented guy, and knowing now that he was struggling with cancer while working on truly brilliant books makes them seem all the more impressive and special.

He was one of the most original and influential artists in mainstream comics, and he's left behind an amazing body of work. Since his work is all I know of him, it sucks that the world will be deprived of all the books he still had in him... :(

message 996: by XenofoneX (new)

XenofoneX | 172 comments I just ordered the Graphitti Gallery Edition of LoEG Volume 1 from IST. The Graphitti Gallery Editions are identical to the IDW Artist Editions, with the facsimile reproductions of the original art at full size, in this case, 12 x 17 inches.

Graphitti have also released Dark Knight Returns, Ronin, and Sandman Gallery Editions, at 15 x 20 inches. They look incredible. I don't know how they did all of this so quietly... I found them by accident.

http://www.graphittidesigns.com/shop/...
http://www.instocktrades.com/search/G...
http://bookpalace.com/acatalog/info_L...

Coincidentally, I read a new review that makes me despair for humanity... a review of LoEG Volume 1 that damns it with the faintest of praise, and goes on to explain how the comic failed where the film succeeded. Where the shittiest comic adaptation of all time was better than the modern classic it was supposedly based on. WTF. She's a GR friend, and I don't like disagreeing in comments sections, so I didn't... still... every opinion may be valid, but some of them clearly suck. :)

I thought it was bad enough that a sentimental favorite of mine would always be associated with this crappy film that shares its name, but I never thought I'd hear someone talking about Sean Connery's mess as the superior version.

message 997: by Blindzider, Moderator (new)

Blindzider | 3293 comments Mod
That's pretty shocking to think the film was better. I can understand not liking the book but the film didn't have the nuance or cleverness the book has.

message 998: by XenofoneX (new)

XenofoneX | 172 comments My thoughts exactly. Hating it? Cool. Saying it was okay but not great? Cool. Saying it was okay but the film was better? Well, that's cool as well... but I cease to care about anything the person says after that. :)
