Having books crossing genres was a concern of mine too.

Thanks for the link, Aildiin. The lists of essentials on http://www.bedetheque.com/indispensab... is interesting, especially for the differences between what many American lists include and what does and doesn't make the European list.

For American comics:

(view spoiler)

A lot of the picks are close; Calvin and Hobbes? I know it's respected as being one of the best newspaper strips of the 2nd half of the 20th century, but the bar's pretty low. It was a great strip, but it wouldn't make my list.
Garfield at No. 19, Little Nemo at No. 21?... WTF?! Non.

The Manga list was a bit different as well; France has a better appreciation for Manga than the US does, owing to a fascination that predates our own, and far more translated titles:

(view spoiler)

I knew that Jiro Taniguchi got far more love from France than the US, but taking the No. 1 AND No. 5 spot? That was surprising. He does have a very European style, though. Seeing Monster beat Akira was a bit odd, but Urasawa is a true master... and then I noticed that Akira appears three times, in three different editions, two of them full-color versions. But... Blade of the Immortal is a long way down, at No. 27 - 'L'Habitant de L'Infini', and No. 22 for 'Lone Wolf and Cub' seems low, as does No. 18 for 'Vagabond'.

These lists were voted on by the public, as opposed to being voted on or agreed on by critics. I don't know which is preferable, because I've seen some terrible lists put together by 'experts'... and there's never going to be a list that satisfies everyone.

While I have no knowledge either way, the fact that they haven't even done a HC at all makes me think there are no plans, but you never know. DC seems to be really picking up the pace on collected editions.

Go Team!

I wasn't actually excited about either cover of the Cap omnibus but the variant looked more like the classic cover (I know it's a recreation of an early cover) than the regular cover did.

I'll order the Snyder Batman HC vol 8 (it's out today) with Locke and Key Master Edition 2 (delayed again) next week. That's the plan anyway. :) Still want eventually pick up Uncanny X-Men OHC by Bendis vol 1, Superior Foes of Spider-Man, Neal Adams Batman omnibus, and... I could go on.

Strange.

Ordered off of IST, the price already went up since this morning, bastards!!!

FYI. I started a recommended reading list thread to start discussing what books people think should be on there. This is sort of a trial to see the best way to do this. Obviously we'll have different threads in the future.

They usually have Marvel and DC books at 50% off cover price release week and then going into the second week the price goes to 42% off cover. New books are posted Tuesday afternoon about 2pm central standard time though this week it happened earlier. Variant covers will usually start at the same price as the standard cover but if stock starts to get low the price goes up.

message 816: by Aildiin (last edited Mar 16, 2016 12:54PM) (new)

Aildiin | 130 comments Eisnein,
Part of the issues with the Manga and Comics lists is that they are heavily skewed toward titles that have been translated in french for a long time. So you won't many of the new recent good titles. That is the reason you see so many classics.
The other reason is most people on that site ( the biggest site for collector of euro comics by far) are focused on euro comics and rarely vote for something else.
Really I would not put too much into either of those lists.

The one list that really matters is the one for french-belgium bande dessinees. That list is really a lot more canonical. And quite a few titles on that list have been translated to english.

Frank wrote: "Thanks, this info will tighten up my buying instead of delaying on a new title."

Yeah, that's part of what drove me to want to keep a running list on what is coming out. Buying it the week of release can lead to some decent savings. :)

message 818: by Blindzider, Moderator (new)

Blindzider | 3293 comments Mod
One thing I did this last time: on IST, if you have a one week gap between new items coming out you would lose your 2% discount because that only last for eight days between purchases.

If there are enough purchases to split it up on week 1, buy a couple items (that came out on week 1) on Tuesday morning of week 2, a few hours before that week's items go up on the web site. This will bridge your 2% discount to week three and you still get that 50% discount.

You just want to make sure you have enough to get the free shipping and remember what time (for your time zone) that IST typically updates their website. Also for the items that you wait a week, be aware of what is popular and may sell out.

Oh, definitely; the BD list had a couple surprises but was very solid, at least as far as the titles I've read, and some titles I want to check out. Even the manga and US lists were pretty good, just subject to the anomalies that come from assembling any list open to the public. It doesn't matter if it's the US or Europe, you'll always end up with a couple 'Garfield' votes -- actually, N. America would likely be far worse: Dilbert's and Cathy's everywhere. Some of the GR Listopia lists are alright, but beyond a certain number of voters, they always end up polluted with multiple editions and second volumes and wise-ass MF's making joke picks.

XenofoneX | 172 comments I just ordered a Frank-sized load of cool stuff from IST, amazon.ca/amazon.fr, and a BD seller in Quebec, as well as a couple things from eBay and elsewhere. I had decided to spend 25% of my tax refund on books... but I went waaay over. Oh well :-) :

-Will Eisner's The Spirit: Artist's Edition (HC, 160 pgs, 15.5 x 22 inches)
Will Eisner's The Spirit Artist's Edition (vol. 1) by Will Eisner

-Blacksad: L'intégrale (T01-05) (HC Omnibus, 310pgs, 10 x 13 inches)
Blacksad l'intégrale by Juanjo Guarnido

-Blacksad: T05-Amarillo - Tirage de Tetes (Ltd. Ed., 120 pgs, 12 x 16.5 inches); I think the pics below are of the slipcase, and that the 'Tirage de Tetes' name refers to, literally, the 'head drawing' that traditionally appears on these slipcased OHC editions, some of which are about the same size; the 'Tirage Luxe' are always bigger, it seems (the Luxe Ed. of Blacksad: T03 was 15 x 20 inches, and 300 euros).
FRONT:descriptionBACK:description

-Les Roi des Mouches - Intégrale luxe (Ltd. Ed., 220 pgs, 11.5 x 15 inches)
Le Roi des Mouches - Intégrale Luxe by Mezzo

-Nicolas de Crecy - Artbook (OHC, 343 pgs, 10.5 x 12.5 inches)
Nicolas de Crécy by Nicolas de Crécy

All cool stuff. This, however, was my favorite...

-VACVVM: Portfolio One - Ltd. Ed. of 260 Hardcase Portfolios, w/8 signed & numbered 11 x 14 inch serigraph/silkscreen/giclee prints, each by one of the 8 members in the VACVVM Art Collective. This is an artistic supergroup, for me. Aaron Horkey and Vania Zouravliov are two of the most brilliant illustrators alive, and Gallery artists as well. Joao Ruas is just as talented -- he stepped in as cover artist on 'Fables' after James Jean left, then became a full-time painter. Nicolas Delort, Mike Sutfin, Ken Taylor... this is one Portfolio I couldn't pass on...

message 830: by XenofoneX (new)

XenofoneX | 172 comments I hear you. I've already crushed enough numbers to realize that it's physically impossible to read all the print and digital lit I have on my 'to-read' piles, even if I all I do is read for the next 50 years... without sleeping. Even the ones in my physical library are going to keep me busy a long time, and I've only been buying artbooks and comic collections over the last few years, with some exceptions.

In terms of novels and non-fiction, 1 book a week is overly optimistic, but I can get through a comic hardcover or two in a week, so it averages out. Anyway, a book a week for 50 years is just 2600 titles, so I better get to all those classics I craftily avoided until now. On the positive side, we're never lacking for intellectual sustenance/brain candy/everything in between.

Wow! That's quite a lot on the read list.

What I started doing last year, is read my comic stuff right before bed, and get through at about the same rate you do, 1-2 a week. But during my commute to work I listen to audio books for novels and non-fiction. It's a nice balance for me. My only issue is the lack of audiobooks for stuff I want to read.

I read 200 books each year the last two years. I hope to do that again this year. I'm a quick reader so that really helps. Helps keep my reading habit expensive that is. :p

That Inception print is so awesome. I'd probably be tempted to hang it on the wall at work so I can look at it often. I do have the Taylor print for Thor: Dark World. I bought the blue variant of that one hoping it would match the Man of Steel. They are slightly different shades but I have them both framed and near each other. I was really hoping for a Winter Soldier print by Taylor to go with them but no luck so far. I'll be watching to see what all we get for the next Cap movie.

I don't usually buy books that are artist focused versus story focused. However, I did order a copy of this Avengers Perez book from IST: http://www.idwpublishing.com/product/...

It's expensive but I'm justifying it in part because it is signed by Perez. It's limited to 999 copies and the IST price is $90 which is cheaper that the price directly from IDW (sold out).

XenofoneX | 172 comments Frank: It seemed appropriate to name those big orders that feel like a Christmas-bonanza after some of the spectacular orders you've made. It's good to know other people are as passionate about books.

Blindzider: I do almost exactly the same thing -- audiobooks on long solo commutes, and I also get up 2-3 hours early to quietly sip coffee and read, before getting into my daily routine. I'm also an insomniac, so it's audiobooks through headphones or reading via I-pad/paper prose. I haven't strangled myself yet with the cord while sleeping, but if I disappear, it's probably death-by-earbuds. :-)

That Perez book looks great, Rel. I haven't read much Perez, but I do admire his very complex and cleanly rendered style. Steranko is another Marvel artist from the Bronze age I like. Kirby... I try to appreciate, but can't.

I love IDW's books on the masters, and their reprints. I'm expecting The Spirit Artist's Edition to come in soon, and Eisner's art on The Spirit was brilliant. It was a toss-up between that and the Jim Steranko Nick Fury Agent of SHIELD Artist's Edition, which is definitely my next Artist's Edition purchase.

Nice. You didn't disappoint, Frank; that's a hearty serving of comic-book protein with a dusting of delicious steroids. The only fat I'd trim is the Secret Wars Omnibus, but that's just my personal hang-ups showing. And to be fair, it's been a long time since I read it. :-)

Locke and Key is excellent; I have all the regular IDW HC's, and they're beautifully done, which is kinda unfortunate... because the Master Editions look amazing. I'll crack on that one eventually.

It's the same with the Parker books from IDW; the design of the regular HC's is near perfect. They have a very appealing early-60's aesthetic, with colored letterpressing under the dust-jacket. When the publisher goes above and beyond, it shows in the minute details. So I skipped the double-sized Martini edition.

The Parker adaptations by Cooke are fantastic. The art and story fuse to form a stronger alloy, making it feel like the work of a single focussed mind, and already a classic. I hope you like it. :-)

Yes, it should be out. 'The Outfit' was released in October of 2010, and the Martini edition came out 14 months later, in December of 2011. 'Slayground' came out in December of 2013, so it would have been fair to expect it in February of 2015.

I'm wondering if they might include 3 books in the second Martini edition, because 'Slayground', the 4th HC, is considerably shorter, under a 100 pages. The first Martini edition, with extras, is 360 pages, while books 3 and 4 -- without extras -- add up to exactly 240 pages... if they don't have many extras, book 5 would make for a much better Martini. I liked 'Slayground', but compared to 'The Score' or the first two books, it feels light. And who knows... maybe Cooke's only planning on one more adaptation?

This article on Cooke from 2015 talks about the promise at the end of Slayground for Parker's return in 2015 (didn't happen, of course), and his unwillingness to lock down a number on how many more Parker adaptations will appear, and when... which explains why IDW is holding off. If Cooke does 2 more books, then 3 Martini editions are necessary. But if it's one, then they'll want to include it with Vol. 2. They're waiting on a decision by Cooke basically, but another Parker book is supposedly coming out later this year:

Flanagan pointed out that the end of Cooke's graphic novel "Slayground" promised that Parker, the character based on Donald Westlake's series of crime novels, would return in 2015.

Darwyn Cooke On Choreographing Comics Action, Life After "Parker"

"2015's a lie," Cooke said, adding, "There will be more Parker. I was so excited about the Parker work and so thrilled to be doing it, and it actually was successful. I was supposed to do four books over eight years, that was the contract, and I ended up doing four books in four years. And the problem was, by the time I got to the fourth book, there's a point where you start to become that thing that's just there. All the excitement or anticipation had gone out of it, I think. I thought it would be a good idea to put the brakes on it for a couple years and just let people miss him a bit before we get back to it. I'm not sure -- there might be two more, there might only be one more. Who knows what the future holds? Frankly, I could see Parker and I getting along for as long as I can hold a pencil. He will return, but it probably won't be until 2016. The last one I'm going to do is 'Butcher's Moon,' which is probably the masterpiece out of the books."

http://www.comicbookresources.com/art...

Even if a second Martini Edition never appeared, for whatever reason, I'd still like to own the original one. I'll be picking it up soon, because the art is fantastic... even though Cooke's style is so perfectly designed it reads very clearly in the standard format.

I have heard good things about the regular hardcovers for Parker. They are standard sized if Amazon is to be believed so the Martini edition is substantially larger. The Martini edition is well put together and does have a additional short story. There is a three page (IIRC) interview of Cooke and Brubaker that is probably not in the standard size books.

While it's probably going to be a year or so before we might see another Martini sized edition I don't regret my first read being in the larger format. :)
