What have you added to your collection recently?
The difference between Tales of Wonder and DCBS orders is that Tales of Wonder charges you when the item ships and they have free shipping. You pay in advance with DCBS.

Is that the right interpretation?

I just got my copy of The Last God in the mail yesterday evening. Really happy this sort of fantasy is getting made into a graphic novel by one of the big 2. Nice artwork during the series. I do hope the hardcover sells well and DC continues down this path with more of this story or more similar projects.
That said, I'm underwhelmed, disappointed even, in the production value of the hardcover. Tight glued binding that does make the art in the center of the book a bit harder to see and the coloring is not as vibrant in the book as it was in the single issues. This book should have been oversized, better paper, better binding, and with coloring as good as the single issues. I would have gladly paid more for a better book. One of the cool features they did include is that the DJ is actually a map you can unfold.
I'll take some pictures of the book and post them on our MeWe page either tonight or tomorrow.

I thought I'd put this out there in advance of the long weekend -

I usually juggle between IST and CGN. I have ordered through OPB, but my orders were cancelled through no fault of OPB, but the publisher cancelled the books.
With that said, IST really needs to revamp their setup with TOW. I rarely use TOW because you only get free shipping if it is over $99.00, and their discounts are far less than IST. Atleast in the past they have been. Currently new released Marvel Omni's on IST are 42% vs. the 38% listed in the e-mail. So with the loyalty discount of 2%, that could be up to a 6% difference which definitely adds up. But does that mean that IST are lowering their discount again, according to that email it might be a possibility.
As for shipping I ALWAYS upgrade to the UPS Ground shipping for 4.00 on IST. But the past 3 shipments have been handed over to USPS from UPS once they reach the state. I have emailed IST asking why this is happening, and it has been radio silence going on 3 weeks.
CGN usually has a slightly lower discount. and slower shipping but is making strides on improving some of their issues. They are starting to offer a fair amount of pre-orders. and will have more shipping offers in the near future. They get back to you on emails usually within a week and they are always answered by Max. If CGN could offer a loyalty discount comparable to IST, I honestly think I would just change everything over to them.
I have had damaged shipments from IST in the past, quite often actually and it is always dependant upon their delivery medium. When they use the expandable foam shipping, I have had 0 damages. When they use their industrial bubble wrap, maybe 1 in 10 come damaged. When they use those damnable packing peanuts, my damage shoots up to 50%. The good thing is that when emailed about the damages with photos, they have always been good for it. I have even tried breaking up some large shipments into different orders, but it all boils down to what packing supplies they have on hand. They really need to do a cost analysis on book size vs. packing medium vs. damages and returns. The Monster Sized Kirby Editions come damaged probably about 30/35% of the time and are ALWAYS packing peanuts. If they used the expandable foam on those, I bet I would receive them with 0 damage.
CGN always uses the craft shipping paper. They have the option to add insurance on your order, but I have never used it. I have also never had a damaged shipment from CGN. To be fair, only about 10% of my orders in the past have come from CGN, so my volume from IST is much higher when comparing damages.
OPB is the new kid on the block. Their discounts are less on average. But they offer pre-order on a very large quantity of books. They have recently expanded their operations and are growing rapidly. They offer multiple shipping options, and also offer shipping insurance. The major plus I see with them is that they have a strong social media presence. They communicate very well, putting posts on social media about delays, explaining shipping issues and just really helping you understand some of the issues selling and shipping the books we all love. They even have some YouTube videos showing off their new operation. The main thing preventing me from ordering much from them is their price points. They are just the highest, and when you order as many books as I do every penny counts.
If you made it this far, Thanks!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts John. Always good to hear about other experiences and those can help us make decisions about where and how to spend our money. Cheers!

This was great, mate. I haven't had any damage issues with any of the companies I order from, but I do get annoyed when IST sends me those packing peanuts.
CGN does have the most consistent packaging, IMO. I've preordered a few books I missed with DCBS (namely the FF Omni reprints) and they've shipped out fairly quickly, within a week. The only downside with that is having to pre-order each book separately, which means more shipping costs.
I didn’t open it yet but was also sad to see that Last God was not the same size as the other Black Label books i have. Looking forward to reading it though. Wish it wasn’t glued binding.
I also received my Death of Captain America. Happy it didn’t have the new spine design but with the thinner paper the book is much smaller than i thought it would be.
XFactor by David also did not have the new spine design.
I’ve been pretty happy with dcbs. It would be nice if they didn’t charge until it ships but i think prepaying guarantees me a book.
IST packing has been an issue lately and I’ve moved almost completely to dcbs for new release books. TOW the $100 free shipping limit is too high for me.

Last God was next level! I can't wait for the second volume to be solicited

I couldn't pull the trigger on the Fraction Thor omni. The reviews of that run aren't great and I don't feel compelled to be a completionist this time around.

I pre-ordered the Books of Doom omnibus and there's a new Deluxe HC of Midnight Nation by JMS and Gary Frank. Always wanted to read this and apparently the previous collection weren't high quality. Hopefully this one will be because it's a little pricey.

I took a chance and preordered that Deathstroke Omnibus. Hope it is worth it.
I just received my What If Vol.1 Omnibus. The spine is "white" but it has a yellowish discoloration on the top half. Does anyone else have that on theirs (I have the Kirby cover.) I can't tell if it is by design or somehow my copy was sitting halfway in the sun or something.

@Joseph - Thanks, that makes me feel better. I've read Priest's BP run and have only read a little of the character Deathstroke.
@noelbeast - Thanks, I think it is intended, but it's a little weird. If it is just mine, I'm not sure if I'll go through the hassle of returning it. IST is really slow in that department.

Thanks for the info. Fingers crossed.
Despite already buying V2 and V3, I've decided to not continue the Blade of the Immortal series. Even though I enjoy it (currently watching the movie), the idea of trying to find space for another 4 or more volumes is not appealing. For some reason I thought there was only going to be three, but then I saw the solicit for V5. May have to find some other way to continue reading it...

Yes. The Blade of Immortal HC will be the same as the TPB as far as I know. And I have 10 of them, replacing them with the HC as they come out. I’m through Volume 7 or 8 (not sure)
As for swamp thing vol 3, I’m not concerned. I’m confident we will get it eventually as there was already a reprint of Vol 1.
Was the Kirby vol 1 reprinted? I really want vol 2.

Decided to pursue custom dust jackets for ASM vol 5 and FF vols 2-4. So far I’ve only redressed ASM5: https://imgur.com/a/kbyj1Bx
Worked out to just under $25 a jacket after independent printing; feel free to criticize my frivolity. I could’ve reined the cost in more since the graphic artist who designed them uses name your price, but I asked for and paid him his high average. He also wanted social media shares, not that I was obligated, but I don’t really do that.
Final takeaway: I’m happy, and no regrets. I’ve still got to get the new jacket formed around the book a bit better, but this is all for the love of some uniform spines…

bleedingcool has written a couple articles suggesting that issues in the printing industry are causing some delays in collected editions being released. BC writes a lot of clickbait articles but it wouldn't surprise me if this was true.

That price increase on Savage Sword of Conan is savage on my wallet ($81). Will this be the largest numbered series of Marvel omnibus volumes (this one for pre-order is volume 7)?
I'm grabbing the Lobster Johnson HC as well. Some of these books have sold out right off the bat when they came in so it makes sense to preorder like this.

Preorder Availability for InStockTrades & Tales of Wonder
Dear InStockTrades & Tales of Wonder Customers:
To better ensure the satisfaction of all of our customers, we will be making a few adjustments to the Tales of Wonder website in the upcoming days. Starting in September 2021 and going forward, Tales of Wonder will only be offering monthly preorder items. This means that any preorder items from previous months or older product will no longer be available for purchase on Tales of Wonder. Once the monthly preorder due date has passed those current month’s preorder items will no longer be available on Tales of Wonder and the website will be refreshed with the next month’s preorder items. Any orders placed before the September preorder items go live on Tales of Wonder (September 4th) will be filled the same as before. For Tales of Wonder customers that are interested in purchasing in stock titles, you can do so through the InStockTrades website. Any other items or books that you may be interested in purchasing and cannot find on these two websites, you should be able to purchase through our sister site, Discount Comic Book Service (www.DCBService.com).
We are doing this because InStockTrades customers have been requesting the ability to preorder for many years and since Tales of Wonder preorders get filled through InStockTrades, this is a way that we can offer our customers a reliable, streamlined preorder option.
We are going to begin this process by offering limited publishers. The following publishers’ collected editions will be available for preorder on Tales of Wonder, along with their discounts:
Marvel 38%
DC 42%
Image 42%
Dark Horse 42%
IDW 30%
Boom! Studios 30%
Both InStockTrades and Tales of Wonder will offer the same discount for those publishers. However, the InStockTrades 2% Loyalty Discount will not be eligible on Tales of Wonder orders and the Tales of Wonder special item prices will not be eligible on InStockTrades orders.
One major bonus to these changes is that it will allow us to be able to move a portion of Tales of Wonder and InStockTrades orders back to Indiana where we have more reliable staffing. This is something that we have been wanting to do for a few years now and are glad that we can finally get started!
We thank you all for your patience this past year and we appreciate your understanding through these changes!
