Nice! I enjoyed the omnibus. I liked the way this brought Norse myth into Marvel. It may not feel like typical modern Marvel writing from today's newsstands, but it felt right for the character and his story. This is what forms the background I think of that gives the modern character his foundation when I read Thor in modern Marvel writing.

Darth Bane | 261 comments I visited Sweden last year and Iceland the year before and had a great time. I've also been reading up on Norwegian history, Norse mythology, etc. the last few years. Its kind of funny but the only Thor I have red is Aaron's. I figured it was high time I got more into the character. I even bought the first five issues of Cates' run today at the LCS. I'm doubling down on Thor!

I really enjoyed the thor volume that ran into disassembled. It got me back into comics. If you’re interested, the entire run was collected in Thor Heroes Reborn Omnis 1&2

message 6208: by Darth Bane (new)

Darth Bane | 261 comments I'll check it out on MU. I have also heard JMS's run is quite good, which is why that omni is wicked expensive currently.

Blindzider | 3293 comments Mod
I really liked the JMS Thor. However be aware that the Omni only contains the books JMS wrote. The end of the Omni doesn’t have the end of the story which was written by Kieron Gillen and it was collected in a different tpb. That really irritated me when I read the Omni because it was basically like a giant cliffhanger. Still haven’t read the end of that.

Walter Simonson is putting out a creator owned Thor book titled Ragnarok. There are two hardcovers out and a third should be coming the end of next month. Worth checking out if you want to continue to explore the Thor mythos in comic form: Link for reference: https://www.amazon.com/Ragnarok-1-Las...

Another Norse based comic story with nice art featuring a young woman warrior is Vei. Originally a best seller in Sweden, it's been translated into English and the whole story is available in two oversize hardcovers. I don't think this was ever available on IST and was only distributed through book store versus comic book channels. I thought the art was well done and I enjoyed the story. Reference link: https://www.amazon.com/Vei-Vol-Sara-B...

I loved JMS run on Thor too, I thought it kicked off as a great follow up to what happened to Thor at the end of the Heroes Return/Disassembled Storyline

Biggest difference for this coming week is probably the Conan omnibus and that they show the Green Arrow Longbow Hunters Omnibus being released on IST on 2 Sep 20. The next couple weeks will be a big on IST for omnibus releases.

Welcome Ryan! Definitely give some thought on what you want, very easy to simply want it all and get out of control.

Advice, great DH editions out there and Image too. when you start to delve into Image, grab what you can without delay and with only 1 or 2 exceptions, I haven’t seen past books get reprints, where as DC and Marvel will reprint (although sometimes you have to wait years for it to happen).

Great start. Welcome to the group. Best of luck!

message 6221: by Ryan (new)

Ryan | 146 comments Thanks for the welcome.

I don’t have a total focus, I just want to collect stories I love. I’m not a hardcore completionist, so I don’t need every single book of a character. For example, I love Batman, but I really don’t see myself buying golden age Omnis since I find that era a bit of a slog to read. I appreciate the history but I prefer more modern stories. I do want entire runs from the writers I like though, so with the Brubaker Capt America ordered, I’ll probably buy the other 4 books in that set too. The last thing I want to do is end up with nothing but “Volume 1’s” of a bunch of stuff and nothing else.

I appreciate the tip about Image books. I buy a lot of Image in single issues and trade paperbacks so I definitely want to grab some Omnis. I have the 3 Saga hardcover books and they are gorgeous. I would love for them to make an Ice Cream Man omni when the series gets lengthy enough. As a 90’s kid, Omnis of Spawn or The Maxx would be instant buys for me too.

Sounds like me about 8 years ago. I was just going to buy the things I most liked with a focus on Marvel and Spider-Man as my main target.
Now I have whole bookshelves from every comic company and my last purchase was Pokémon Adventures Collector's Edition 3.

So all I can say is welcome to the insanity and don't be surprise if your horizons are widening as the years go by ;-)

The Wonder Woman The Hiketeia DLX HC, by Greg Rucka and art by J. G. Jones, was on the list for release last week but was not available from IST. It should be available with this week's releases. This is a book I've been looking forward to checking out for some time as it is frequently mentioned on lists of the best modern Wonder Women stories.

(copied from Wikipedia) Description: Wonder Woman: "The Hiketeia is a modern Greek tragedy of duty and vengeance. When Wonder Woman partakes in an ancient ritual called the Hiketeia, she is honor-bound to eternally protect and care for a young woman named Danielle Wellys. But when Wonder Woman learns that Danielle has killed the sex-slavers/drug dealers who murdered her sister, she suddenly finds herself in battle with Batman, who is searching for the fugitive. The Erinyes also threaten retribution if the Hiketeia is not honored. Caught in a no-win situation, Wonder Woman must choose between breaking a sacred oath and turning her back on justice."

Reception: "Released in 2002, the graphic novel was well received both by fans and critics. Comics Worth Reading considered it to be "the best Wonder Woman story". Readers gave praise for Rucka's treatment of Diana as a real person, not an idealized caricature of all womanhood, capturing her voice as an Amazon and a foreign princess who was not aloof or reserved. Instead, her depiction was praised for showing Diana as caring, thoughtful, capable of reflection (without self-absorption) and even humor."

That's a nice list of some great stories Ryan. =) I'd consider targeting the Brubaker Daredevil omnibus volumes in your near future. They were recently reprinted so hopefully won't be terribly expensive to pick up. They pick up right where the Bendis run ends and are really well done. Didn't grow up a big Daredevil fan, but these two runs helped me appreciate the character and I think these back to back runs would probably be on my list of best modern Marvel stories.

I just read that Wonder Woman Hiketia. It’s good just keep your expectations reasonable.

I just went to a used book store that I used to frequent and haven’t been to in awhile and found a copy of Superman Red Son in hardcover, excellent shape for half off cover. Haven’t had a lucky find in a long time.

To answer the question about an Absolute Red Son, now that I have the hardcover, I think it’s too few pages for an absolute. It’s not much more than Year One but I don’t think there’s enough extra material to warrant it.

Not a lot new yesterday I was interested in. I ordered the Wonder Woman Hiketeia DLX, Blame Master Edition TPB vol 4 (I got the first three volumes cheap off Ebay), and Levius TPB vol 2. Levius had a hardback volume come out a while back I liked and the series is continuing/going through a spin-off. It's a manga with a European style art and it's crafted to read the same way we read western comics.

Next week will be a busy release week. If IST's schedule is correct, I'm planning in getting both the Absolute Carnage omnibus and X-Men Grand Design omnibus potentially along with the Steranako is Revolutionary HC, and the Dceased Unkillables HC.

Joseph wrote: "Just curious, Rel, but do you place an order each week something you like is available? I usually wait and place an order once a month. I guess it depends on how much you purchase each month."

I skip a week or so sometimes but I usually try keep a once a week order rolling. If you place a second order within 8 days of your last order on IST you get an extra 2% off. Not a huge amount but I usually try to keep my orders closer to $50 for free shipping and then once a week for the extra discount. As long as I'm in the mood to read something I'm usually a pretty quick reader.

This coming week will be a bit unusual as there are a couple books coming out that will put me well over the $50 free shipping target.

On another note, I spent some time last night removing staples and cutting off back cover pages from single issues getting them ready to send off for custom binding. I have Waid's more recent Captain America run, the Lemire/Brisson Old Man Logan run, and some cosmic stuff starting with Lemire's Thanos. I'm a bit surprised Lemire's Thanos didn't get an OHC.

There a few custom binding shops that do comic binds but if you aren't familiar with this practice here is the website with examples from the binder I've been using:

Rel: since you brought up custom binding, have you ever sent in books previously bound to be rebound into a larger edition? TPBs or others? I was going to collect X-Factor vol. 3 as about 16 Marvel premiere select hardcovers and the last 30 issues as a custom bind from individual comics, but for a while been pondering getting the 16 HCs rebound as well to condense the number of total volumes. I emailed Herring and Robinson directly to ask if they could do that and heard back they think they could, but just curious if you have any direct experience with such a project.

Relstuart | 2964 comments Mod
I have had them custom bind a mixture of TPB, standard hardcover, and single issues and that worked out well. I have not sent in previously custom bound books to have them rebound. I would expect they could do it though. =)

Yeah, this will be a much quieter week than I was originally expecting unless some unexpected books show up on IST. I'll be interested in seeing how much the Steranko book goes on sale for. As a big Steranko fan I'm tempted even though I have this material already in the omnibus.

Good call. Hopefully IST will have the Unkillables book as I'll look to pick it up after enjoying the main book. Nice to see them also doing more than just the main run in hardcover as these are often paperbacks.

With Diamond no longer distributing most DC publications, Previews won't have much of their books listed anymore. This week's listing contained the Specter omnibus and I guess we'll keep seeing some of those larger books that may be under contract for distribution, but not single issues and smaller books.
