Antony McEwan | 42 comments Enjoying the Amazing Spider-Man Omnibus Vol 4 so much that I started looking for the next Omni to follow on: the Roger Stern Spider-Man Omni! Soon realised it's a bit of a whale but found what looks like a good "reader copy" on ebay, so that's on its way to me now (at least I waited until my pay was in the bank first!)

Read the Marvels DLX version over the weekend and it was fantastic. I thought I'd read it a long time ago but now I'm not sure I did or not. It's the best book of the year for me so far.

Tried a new manga, High-rise Invasion. It's a sci-fi book where the main character daydreams and then looks around to see someone murdered and realizes they are in a different world where they are trapped on top of high-rise buildings connected by rope bridges. People in masks are trying to either kill or force non-mask wearers to commit suicide.

Enjoyed it enough to order most of the rest of the books released so far. More in the style of a fun action movie versus serious drama.

I have several orders pending as well. Shipping from IST and by UPS both seem slower than usual.

We may also see the Preacher Omnibus vol 1 released on IST today if anyone is planning to pick that one up.

noelbeast | 489 comments I know everyone has different experiences in their area, but where I live the USPS is much more reliable than the UPS. I’ve had no noticeable delays compared to business as usual with my IST shipments, and my last 2 orders have come in 14 and 11 days, respectively. That being said, now have my Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Silver Surfer reprints, as well as Immortal Hulk vol. 2. Also picked up a copy of the Cable & X-Force omnibus, which has been sitting on my want list for about a year.

Cool update for art lovers: recently picked up this Wolverine commission by Mark Texeira and finished a proper mount & frame for it: https://imgur.com/a/PbCBygw

And I’ve also had some fun adventures on eBay lately with buying and selling CGC slabbed comics, but that’ll be a story for another time. April and May were a good time to buy, though, and June & July have been excellent selling months.

Nate Drake | 32 comments Ha ha ha. Cyclops is actually my favourite X-Men
I think it's New X-Men & Astonishing X-Men that makes him that for me. He's great in those runs.
Plus I grew up with the animated series and he's clearly the leader in that.
Plus I think I prefer him with Emma Frost than Jean Grey.

I used to think cyclops was lame too. My initial introduction was the ‘90’s cartoon and the movies. The movies botched Cyclops hard, making him a weenie. Cartoon barely scratched the surface.

Then I started reading from issue 1 and when you get to the ‘70s and ‘80s you realize he’s a great character. One of my favorite issues is when he loses leadership to Ororo

The Hellboy Library Editions are much bigger than the standard size BPRD and Baltimore books. Both wider (9.3 inches) and taller (12.2 inches) than a omnibus size DC or Marvel book (7.8 by 11.2 inches).

Read the first paperback of Snyder's Image series, Undiscovered Country last night. I had low expectations based on some commentary indicating the book was going to be a vehicle for some political commentary and some initial mediocre review comments. I was very entertained and it's a crazy zany sci-fi story that wasn't at all what I was expecting. The basic premise is that America disengaged from the rest of the world, put up a wall that blocked any surveillance, and hasn't let anyone in or out in 30 years. The book follows a small group of people being allowed to enter the country seeking a cure for a pandemic killing a huge portion of the world. But, all is not as it seems....

I also finally read the second Injustice DLX. Wow. What a crazy ride. I'm enjoying reading it in DLX edition size chapters.

Blindzider wrote: "I’ve been thinking about trying the injustice books. Those are based on the video game right?"

I'm not sure which came first. I don't feel like I'm reading an adaption. It's really well done - what if someone killed someone Superman loved? How would Superman react when he becomes convinced he can and should use deadly force to force the world to be a better place? Will other heroes stand with him or oppose him and what impact does that have? It's kind of a DC Civil War event but because it's all elseworld, I feel like characters are in danger that otherwise wouldn't be if this was supposed to be in continuity. This is Mark Waid's Irredeemable but with Superman as the super man.

There is a large omnibus with more content than the two DLX volumes but I'm really enjoying the DLX sized books over the really big omnibus versions lately.

message 6176: by Darth Bane (new)

Darth Bane | 261 comments Injustice caught me off guard. I read it weekly as it came out, and despite being a digital first, weird landscape style comic, it actually was pretty well done. At its worst, the story and art are enjoyable as quick reads. At its best, well, it's superb. There are so many classic moments. It FEELS like a perfect else worlds ongoing. I rented the game and played through the story mode (I'm not much of a gamer) but the comic outshines it for sure. It's a wild ride and free to do what it needs to do because it's separate from the canon DCU. I routinely kick myself for not getting the omnibus when it was available. If you haven't read it yet, I guarantee you will have a good time.

Definitely! I like well-written "elseworlds" stories because they can actually take chances and not worry about continuity. Taylor can write edgy, so looking forward to this.

Can't beat perfect condition. =)

I read the final volume of Drifting Classroom and Berserk DLX volume 5 over the weekend.

I felt like the second volume of Drifting Classroom went a bit further into unreasonable territory with some of the plot points as the story progressed. I was concerned the third book would be similar. We're in such odd territory it's hard to quantify what bizarre things ought to be "reasonable" and which would not be. I felt the third and final volume was better in that respect. While the ending was not what I expected, it made sense and wrapped up the storyline with some satisfactory notes. Overall glad I read the series but not something I'll recommend as a must read in the future unless someone has a request for a book that is a Lord of the Flies type of a story.

Berserk DLX 5 finally took the story beyond what I was familiar with in the three movies on Netflix. It continues to be interesting and I'm in for the long haul.

I grabbed Solomon Kane. One of my favorite characters. Never read the marvel years. I liked the more recent Dark Horse and have read a bit of the original stories.

Antony McEwan | 42 comments The Solomon Kane omni does look good. I like that era of gothic adventure - it would be a nice companion to a Tomb of Dracula omni...

Today's arrival for me was the Roger Stern Spider-Man Omnibus. Very, very happy to have this, and found it as a reasonable price (but probably more than the reprint will cost.... but that's still a long way off, so all is good)! I'm glad I have this now to move onto when I finish ASM Omni Vol 4.

noelbeast | 489 comments Bought a copy of Thor vol. 4 by Jason Aaron yesterday on IST, among some other X-TBPs. I’m excited for the War of the Realms omni coming this fall. Has anyone read that event as it was coming out? I remember seeing panels and pages shared on reddit during its release, and it looked like a lot of fun.

message 6189: by Darth Bane (new)

Darth Bane | 261 comments WotR was OK as far as events go. I really, really liked Aaron's Thor run, and the event was fun in the moment. Like a lot of these things, I think the tie ins kind of bogged it down (there was a ton of them). I wasn't reading his Avengers run at the time, so maybe that had something to do with it. Overall, I will probably get the omnibus out of FOMO, since its almost guaranteed that Aaron's Thor will get the omni treatment at some point.

Thanks Darth. I don’t read Thor comics typically, but heard enough praise for Aaron’s run to pursue the OHCs. Hear you on the issue of tie-ins bogging things down. I don’t think I’ve read an event from the last 20 years or so of Marvel that didn’t feel that way, but oh well. Still get surprised from time to time when a tie-in impresses.

Read the first two TPB volumes of Goblin Slayer last night (manga). This series comes up as a top ten fantasy manga book so I thought I'd give it a shot. First book was just set up with character introduction and a basic adventure/quest. The main character is a young female magic user who decided to join an adventuring guild and the Goblin Slayer character is someone who came to her rescue when her first adventure goes badly. The second book brings in a wider cast and sets up what is likely a longer storyline.

Mature elements and art. First book felt very ordinary and basic with common anime/manga fantasy story elements. Second book showed some promise and expanded the world and cast of characters a bit. I picked up the first two books from Amazon as they are not in stock on IST and ordered the next two from IST. Usually these types of books read pretty quickly and when the volumes are this small I try to pick up a couple books at once to give the story a fair shake. At this point I can't recommend this as anything special or worth seeking out over other popular manga efforts.

I'm very much still in the dipping my toes into manga phase after reading western style comics for years.

The ones I've liked the most and enough to recommend to people so far are:
Vinland Saga
Samurai Executioner
Finding Neverland
Blade of the Immortal
Berserk (caveat with this is that it is very graphic)

Others I enjoyed but not sure who (in real life) I'd recommend them to:
Battle Angel Alita (box set hardcovers of original series)
Akira
Full Metal Alchemist
Levius

Description for Strange Skies over East Berlin: "When a mysterious alien probe lands outside East Berlin and into Soviet control, the Americans send their top spy in to investigate. Herring has spent the entire Cold War infiltrating the inner circles of East German intelligence for a cause he barely believes in anymore. But as he gets ever closer to the truth, he may find that the power he seeks is too dangerous for anyone to control or contain.
* Writer Jeff Loveness (Judas) and artist Lisandro Estherren (Redneck) present a chilling and intense thriller about a terrifying inhuman threat at the heart of the Cold War - and the one American spy who can save the world... if he can save himself first. Collects the complete 4-issue series."

This sounded interesting enough to try out. I can report back on what I think in a couple weeks when it arrives. :)

I finished reading the new DLX hardcover of Hellsing from Dark Horse last night. I didn't have any familiarity with the series prior to getting this volume. It's put together very well and the faux leather is smooth and textured rather than the pebbled texture for the Berserk deluxe volumes. I've read all of Blade of the Immortal and all the deluxe volumes of the Berserk series. I don't think Hellsing is on the same level in art or story with either other deluxe selection. While both Berserk and Blade of the Immortal contain a lot of violent action, they both explore the impact of trauma on a character as the story develops the people. Hellsing is more straightforward action film style. I'll get the other two volumes and finish the story but if I don't think I'll read it again I'll probably look to pass the series on to someone else.
