Book 1: Read a book by a female author that was first published during your mother's lifetime, but not your own. I read Picnic on Paradise by Joanna Russ, first published in 1968. I was born in 1976 and my mom was born in 1953, so this is during her lifetime but not mine.
Book 2: Read a book written by a male author, first published during your father's lifetime, but not your own. I read Dance Hall of the Dead by Tony Hillerman, first published in 1973. My dad was also born in 1953, so this is during his lifetime but not mine.
Total points so far: 320

Option 2:
The show's main character, Jack Carter, is a U.S. Marshall who finds himself filling the role of sheriff of Eureka. He is a man's man kinda guy, always referring to himself as old school. But he is surrounded by geniuses everywhere he turns. Even Vincent, owner and Chef of Cafe Diem, is the ultimate chef who can whip up anything that you have in mind to absolute perfection. So, as you can imagine, Jack finds himself feeling quite out of place often as he struggles to understand all that is going on around him.
For this option: Read a book in which a character is either out of their element or is often made to feel like an outsider. This can be a person transported to another time, a person with a disability they are trying to overcome or learn to live with, an immigrant, someone in a minority group struggling to fit in.
REQUIRED: Explain briefly what "outside" group the character belongs to and how they are struggling to deal with this.
I read The Yellow Bird Sings. This book is about a Jewish mother and daughter who go into hiding after the rest of their family is killed in a small town in Poland. First, they hide in the barn of a family they know. The husband of the family quietly rapes the Jewish mother every night in the barn while the daughter pretends to sleep. Both witness through a crack of the barn the interplay between husband and wife; wife and sons; sons among each other fight about what is in the barn and why it endangers the family. Finally, the mother and daughter escape separately --the daughter to hid in a convent/orphanage where she is taught to be Catholic, although she remembers her past and her true name and religion. The mother meets other refugees and hides among them. Both mother and daughter feel like fish out of water and long to return to their old lives and most of all, to each other.
