Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments As I listen to Amber Benson narrate Lock In and I hope she continues a career as a narrator, I try to figure where I've heard her voice. I thought it was a character from the original CSI but was wrong. Turns out another cast member from Buffy turned narrator. She has been in quite a few shows and movies so since I never really watched Buffy much it must have been somewhere else I remember her from

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19205 comments She's Tara from Buffy! She hasn't really been in anything else I've seen/heard of off her IMDB. I must say though, I did know of her character well before I watched Buffy.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I've started the second book in The Legend of Eli Monpress, The Spirit Rebellion

message 1254: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19205 comments Now I have the right book, instead of bringing book 3 to work with me on Monday (such disappointment at lunchtime!), I have started the second book in His Dark Materials trilogy The Subtle Knife

That is disappointing. I really like the BDB books. I haven't read The King yet so I haven't made it to The Shadows either, but I've been looking forward to the latter ever since I heard it was coming out.

Since that one's the latest in the series a lot of the plot happens in the previous books.

The King was so good. It was more like the earlier books in the series.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am reading Sourcery, the 3rd book in the Discworld Rincewind Series and #5, in the whole series. I am actually enjoying this one. I didn't care for book #2 all that much. I guess I have finally read enough of the books to care about the characters and understand their quirks.

message 1259: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly | 2033 comments I finished Dweller and thought it was just an okay read at 2 stars, nothing to write home about but it helped me pass the time. Now moving on to The Absent One by Jussi Adler-Olsen

message 1260: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Finished Sourcery. Was on track for 4 stars until the end. Fell apart then and lost all the good feelings. I think he tried to do too much and couldn't recover. Why do authors do this?

message 1261: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I have decided to abandon Wolf Winter after 85 pages. It wasn't working for me at all. I found the writing really disjointed, I didn't like or care about any of the characters and I wasn't getting much of a feel for its 18th century setting either. I have just come out of one reading slump and felt like this was starting to put me into another one so have parted ways with it for now. I may give it another try at some point in the future but then again, I might not.

I have decided to start A Broken World: Letters, Diaries and Memories of the Great War instead. I was planning to read it in May for my World War One project but might as well start it a bit early.

message 1262: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I finished The House at Tyneford aka The Novel in the Viola for the month challenge, just on time! I didn't like it at all, not too much of a plot, plain characters, annoying twist at the end... I feel disappointed because it has been in my list for so long...

I'm now 40 pages into A Spool of Blue Thread. So far the writing is very engaging.

message 1263: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Started Off to Be the Wizard kind of Pratchetty in its way. Read by Luke Daniels same as Iron Druid so exvellent narration. Light funny sci fi fantasy type thing

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I loaded up Men at Arms on my ereader yesterday. I need a break from Discworld soon....

I moved a month ago and still haven't gone to the library I've just been reading ones I own too. Unfortunately my books are still mostly packed up.

It was you reading it that first got me interested in it Kimberly :) I have only read the first few chapters so far but I think it's going to be a good one. I bought two more of her books a couple of days ago: Mary Queen of Scotland and The Isles and The Memoirs of Cleopatra.

message 1271: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I'm reading The Girl with a Pearl Earring. I've had it here at home forever and a friend (in another challenge) chose it off my to-read shelves. Looking forward to getting into this one.

I haven't seen it. I may have to find it. I finished the book though (thanks to being sick in bed) and it was really good. I love this author.

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I finished The Republic of Thieves yesterday and agree with Travis and Sarah. I think it's my least favourite of the three. But I did enjoy hearing the story of Sabetha. I'm intrigued as to who Locke really is.

I'll start The Secret Place maybe today. Not sure if I'll be doing much reading.

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Kimberly wrote: "Isn't it fantastic? I love the characters."

The characters are so eccentric and quirky in the Department Q series. They're a hoot!

message 1282: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I'm reading Loving Mr. Daniels for the Big Brother Challenge which is really good so far. I'm really interested to see what happens, but also scared. It is a sort of forbidden love story between a teacher and student and I'm terrified of what could potentially happen if something actually happens between the two main characters!

I should finish listening to The Fellowship of the Ring on my commute home today. I have really loved this book. Now I'm trying to decide if I should wait a little while before starting the next in the series or jump right into it tomorrow. Any advice?

message 1283: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Especially Assad, his antics are hilarious.

I would read the whole trilogy at once (if you are not tired of the theme). There are many threads and names and plots, and is better to have all those fresh in mind

message 1286: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Yes, Kimberly, Assad is the best! Although, Rose has her moments, too.

message 1287: by Pam (new)

Pam Williams | 156 comments I'm working on reading and writing questions for my school's Battle of the Books for next year. So far I've done The Skin I'm In; One Crazy Summer; Little Women; The Ruins of Gorlan; Sarah, Plain and Tall; and Mockingbird. I've just started Peter and the Starcatchers. Really enjoying it so far.

message 1289: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I started The Two Towers this morning. I'm very glad that I did because it picks up exactly where the first book ended.

Ditto to Peggy's question! What is a Battle of the books?

message 1290: by Pam (new)

Pam Williams | 156 comments I work in the media center at a middle school and every year we have a Battle of the Books. I choose 12 books and read them and formulate 50-60 questions per book. The students pair off in 4 member teams and meet during their lunch periods for battles. The winning team members each receive a Chrome book. Next year will be our third year and my last to have to read and write questions (I will be able to recycle from year one). It's a lot of fun and the students really get into it.

message 1291: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments Sounds like a great program, Pam! You've got a nice cross section of books chosen.

message 1292: by Pam (new)

Pam Williams | 156 comments Thank you. The rest of them are: The Harlem Hellfighters: When Pride Met Courage; I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings; Wonder; Hoot; and Lord of the Flies. I choose 2 non-fiction, 2 classics, and then try to mix the other 8 up with fantasy, realistic, and historical fiction and spread it out a little with male/female driven narratives.

My opinion the best of yhe trilogy

message 1294: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments Great selection, Pam. The students will have some tough decisions to make.

I was talking about the books we were assigned to read in school with a friend just the other day. I recall having to read Lord of the Flies, but I don't recall much of the story. I'm thinking a reread is in order.

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Travis of NNY wrote: "My opinion the best of yhe trilogy "

I have a feeling I will like it better than the first based on the fact that I remember absolutely nothing about the first movie. The tiny things I do remember from any of the movies, didn't happen in the first book. So, either I didn't like the first movie or I didn't actually watch it all those years ago, and I'm pretty sure I did. Either way, I think I'm going to enjoy The Two Towers.

Stephanie I started reading Until Tuesday A Wounded Warrior and the Golden Retriever Who Saved Him by Luis Carlos Montalván for the Big Brother Challenge. I read the first chapter about a year or so ago and couldn't get into the story. The writing was very blah and the story wasn't catching my interest.
I am actually enjoying this book this time around. I just read a part where Tuesday is in a program called Puppies behind bars where prisoners help to train dogs. (view spoiler)
