Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I started Bridge of Scarlet Leaves for the monthly challenge. The story sounds very interesting, but I'm a bit disappointed by the writing. It feels a bit average, and I was hoping for beautiful and captivating writing.

Yeah, book 4 seems to be mostly about the north seas holdings. Two women wanting to rule. Brienne searching for Sansa. Samwell off to be a maester. Cersei scheming, as always. It's good, but I miss the major characters I've come to know and love.

It's being a really interesting reading!

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments We did a group read on Burial Rites a while back. You might be interested in reading the discussion. It should be in the group themed reads folders.

I paid $3.00 from Barnes & Noble, but that is okay for a good story. Thanks for the rec, Dem.

I know in this group everybody is very careful marking spoilers, but I'm generally careful just in case. I don't always care about spoilers. It depends on the book. In some of them the mystery/surprise is very important. In others is just the same, or I already know enough about the story.

Loved Burial Rites wonderful story.

message 1119: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19141 comments Since it seems to be a hot topic in this thread, I hope no one minds if I ask a question about Burial Rites. Did anyone here listen to the audio? I have it on my TBR and was considering getting it during the Audible sale going on, but I wasn't sure if it would make for a good audio or if I should stick to the hard copy. Any thoughts?

message 1120: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Kristie, in the discussion thread Janice posted in message 1111 you'll find some comment about the audiobook. A few people listened to the book and it seems that they liked it. Take a look.

Kristie | 19141 comments Thanks, Sandra!

message 1122: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee For now I'mreading two books, The Fellowship of the Ring and Inkdeath
I've read The Hobbit few months ago .. Or last year maybe, and I have no idea why I'm going this slow on the first book of TLOTR !!!
And I've read the 2nd book of InkWorld trilogy exactly last year, so I'm kinda lost now and little bit forgot what happened .. I hope I catch up soon !!

message 1123: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19141 comments I plan to finish Revival Revival by Stephen King today and start And Then There Were None And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie for the April challenge.

message 1124: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I'm reading Sister Pelagia and the Red Cockerel: A Novel to gain a kill on a series. It started off with way too much religious discussion for me so I'm hoping it moves along now that there is a mystery to solve. I think if I didn't enjoy the first 2 so much I would have put this down.

The audio book was excellent Kristie. I loved the narrator and when I had finished listening to the audio I bought a copy of the paperback and read it again. I struggle with audio books but Burial Rites was wonderful on Audio.

Who was the narrator, Dem?
4/16 edited. The narrator is Morven Christie ☺

message 1134: by Peggy (last edited Apr 16, 2015 12:06AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I've started The Fiery Cross, which might very well be the chunkiest book I've ever read (1443 pages). I guess I'll see you again in this thread in a month or so ;-)

I'm about halfway through Bridge of Scarlet Leaves. It's okay. The writing is a bit mediocre and more romance and less war than I expected.

message 1135: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I finished my first Scalzi with Lock In and i loved it. It combined three things I'm fascinated in - brains, cybernetics and viruses. This got me all excited so i decided to stay along the same lines and started Nexus. I'm also listening to Thirteen for the series challenge and that will kill a series.

Lol. Good luck with that, Peggy. I am scared of chunksters. They adorn my shelves but not my currently reading shelf. I might have a problem.

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Travis of NNY wrote: "My breakdown is The Hobbit super awesome. The Two Towers awesome Fellowship good and return of King ok"

I pretty much agree with you, Travis.

This doesn't happen much for me, but I loved the movies much more than the books. I could watch them over and over. I always get teared up with Sam goes into the river after Frodo. I'm not much for battle scenes, but the ones in the movies are exciting for the most part and not too tedious.

I finished the 4th Game of Thrones book and have the 5th one on hold for me at the library. Lots of cliffhangers to pick up in future books.

I'm reading The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry for the group read. It's not a book I would have normally picked up to read, but it's a fast read and is well-written. I'll be glad to get back to more thrilling stories, though.

message 1138: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments I finished my monthly challenge read - The Serpent's Tale. This series is so good, and I'm sad because I know it doesn't finish. Did I hear correctly that someone is taking over the series and finishing it for Ariana Franklin?

I'll be starting The Children Act tonight. I ordered it from the library thinking I may read it for the toppler. But I'm pretty sure I won't even get to start it on Saturday because I have two other books slated to go. But, I really want to read this book. I have it from the library. So, I shall start.

message 1139: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments I haven't heard anything about someone taking over Ariana Franklin's series, Janice. If they do, I hope they do the series justice.

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments I had heard that her daughter might be taking it over the series.

message 1141: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I restarted Drums of Autumn and am also reading Lord Edgware Dies and The Long War (2nd book in Terry Pratchett's Long Earth Trilogy).

message 1142: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments I thought I'd heard something about her daughter too. It's always a risk when someone else takes over a series like that. I guess time will tell.

message 1143: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments I finished Wizard and Glass. It's a 5 star read. I was so engaged in the story that I was laughing and crying while sitting in the waiting room at the dealership this morning.

I started The Hundred-Foot Journey this afternoon. What a difference in narrator and tone.

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Dawn wrote: "I had heard that her daughter might be taking it over the series."

Yeah, I had heard the same, now that you mention it.

message 1145: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments I'm reading A Street Cat Named Bob: How One Man and His Cat Found Hope on the Streets. It's not that well written, but it's and easy, fast read. Seems uplifting, so far. And the cat is quite amazing.

message 1146: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Finished Burial Rites. I rated it 4 stars. Really good reading. I made some comments in the old discussion thread.
I plan to finish The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry this weekend.

message 1147: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I am finally going to read Alex Cross's Trial. I have read all of the Alex Cross books minus this one :) I had skipped over it because I had heard it wasn't very good, but I need to read it to kill the series :)

It will be nice to be done with the series :) the last book, Hope to Die was sooooooo good!! I waited FOREVER for it at the library :) I think I read it in like 3 days ;) James Patterson is such a good writer, normally. I hope his Michael Bennet books are just as good :)

I have only read the first book in his Witch & Wizard Series, nothing else, so I cannot really comment. I hope, for your sake that they will be. ☺
