A Novel Role-Playing Game

Single Player

Choose your adventurer and dive into a year long quest of swords, magic, quests and personal advancement.

Your Hero
Novel Kingdom is a small kingdom on the edge of Lake Lexicon. It is ruled by the benevolent Queen Skye. Queen Skye is having some trouble enforcing laws in her kingdom after the death of her husband King Forest. You are a new recruit in the kingdom of Novel. Prove your worth to the kingdom and obtain glory for Her Majesty (with some of your own personal glory thrown in).

A newly minted hero starts nothing but 10 health. At least you have your health and a name prefix of Sir.

Leveling
You obtain levels when experience is achieved.
Leveling up heals your hero fully and increases the HP available by 2 per level.

Book Reserve
The best part about Novel Kingdom is their fabulous research department. They've constructed a Tote of Infinite Books and handed them out to all the new recruits. This allows you to store up any books you've read until you're ready to use them. Just keep them listed at the bottom of your adventure log until they're applied to a task.

Weapons
You have two weapons to battle with. A sword and a magic staff.

These weapons may be leveled up to increase their damage.

Magic Staff - Attack = Level of Staff + 2
Gain levels for your magic staff by creating taller pyramids of series reads. (mimic's pyramid challenge)

Read 1 book that's #1 in the series to gain level 1 magic staff.
Add a #1 and #2 in a series to upgrade to level 2 (total: 2 #1's and 1 #2)
Add a #1, #2, and #3 to upgrade to level 3.

Sword - Attack = Level of Sword + 2
Gain levels by reading taller pyramids of page numbers. A book that's 350 pages may count for a 300+ book, a 200+ book or a 100+ book.

Read 1 book that's 100 pages+ for level 1 sword.
Read an additional 1 book that's 100 pages+ and one book that's 200 pages+ to upgrade to level 2.

Monsters
You may venture out into the surrounding regions of the kingdom to fight monsters and hone your combat skills. Killing monsters will let you gain experience and maybe even special items to help you in your travels. Some monsters are common while others are nearing extinction.

Attacking
• Fights alternate between yourself (The Hero) and the monster.
• First the hero attacks the monster, if the monster is still alive, the hero takes damage equal to the attack power of the monster.
• Certain potions or effects may influence the attack power and affects of the weapons.
• Some monsters may be more susceptible to certain weapons.
• The same weapon may be used multiple times per fight.

Example of an Attack

Attack Monster - 6 Attack 10 Health - Reward: 3 Experience
Hero: Level 3 Magic Staff (5 Attack) Level 4 Sword (6 Attack), 10 Health

•Hero Attacks Monster with Magic Staff (5 Attack) => Monster: 5 Health Remaining
•Monster Attacks Hero (6 Attack) => Hero: 4 Health Remaining
•Hero Attacks Monster with Sword (6 Attack) => Monster: Dead
•Hero: Gain 3 Experience.

Common Monster Type: Last Killed: XX/XX/XXXX, Available Next: XX/XX/XXXX + 1 week

You cannot attack monster if your health is at 0.
Your health does not go below 0. (Example: Hero Health 1, Monster attacks for 5, Hero Health is 0).

Bestiary of the World
Common Monsters - Common monsters exist everywhere in staggering amounts. After you kill one though the others scurry back into their holes for a week. You may either wait a week for them to become hungry and venture out again or bribe them out by using one of your spare books. Unfortunately, books used in this way are eaten and aren't good for anything else.

• Goblin - A green little angry fellow that likes to stab weary (and unweary) travelers with sharp pointy sticks.
6 Attack 10 Health - Reward: 1 Experience, 1 Goblin Bone

• Sewer Rat - The bane of all young hero's, the iconic sewer rat. Biting at ankles, he makes his presence known one nip and nibble at a time.
3 Attack 5 Health - Reward: 1 Experience

• Brown Bat - The brown bats are much prettier than the black bats because of their grace, stamina and ability to make a lovely bat leather hat.
3 Attack 15 Health - Reward: 1 Experience, 1 Bat Wing

Uncommon Monsters - Each of these monsters only has a limited population left. After exhausting the remaining population they will be extinct. Since there are so few of these monsters, they stick around each other like glue. Killing one won't scare off the others.

• Omnibus Troll - The Omnibus Troll is the perfect mix of all trolls in one. It's big and ugly and can occasionally sing Disney based songs when near donkeys. (Population: 3)
7 Attack 35 Health - Reward: 3 Experience, 1 Heal Potion.

• Lexicon Ness Monster - The Lexicon Ness Monster is a close cousin of another more popular lake dwelling creature. It spends it's days frolicking in the water, making bubbles and eating unsuspecting boaters. (Population: 2)
10 Attack 30 Health - Reward: 3 Experience, 1 Minor Poison Potion.

• Big Heart (starting 2/1/15) - A large pinkish Yeti that only shows up during Hallmark holidays. It has a big heart and a soft spot for weakness. Use your weaker (lower level) weapon for an additional 2 damage. If your weapons are the same strength either may be used. (Population: 2)
4 Attack 40 Health - Reward: 3 Experience, 1 Find Items Potion (You found the yeti, now let the yeti find other things).

Rare Monsters - Only one of each of these monsters exist in the world. Killing them will be challenging but will reap great rewards.

• Great Red Dragon - A flaming fiery beast with one molten eye that gleams with the fires of.... well, you know. This beast is highly magical. Your magic staff will only do half of it's normal damage however your sword has an additional 2 attack against this beast.
15 Attack 50 Health - Reward: 30 Experience, Orb of Fire (Adds 3 attack to a magic staff)

• Great Green Dragon - This earth dragon lives deep under a mountain of steel. This beast has become almost immune to the touch of a sword but fire will soften his armor. Your sword will only do half of it's normal damage however your magic staff has an additional 2 attack against this beast.
18 Attack 40 Health - Reward: 30 Experience, Orb of Earth (Adds 3 attack to a sword)

• Great Blue Dragon - This dragon rules the seas, and lakes, and streams, and inlets, and fjords and probably lots of other water related terms. Both of your weapons have a tendency to hit a bit softer on this beast (half as hard if you want to know specifics). However, for each healing potion you use, the blue dragon loses 5 health points.
15 Attack 60 Health - Reward: 30 Experience, Orb of Water (Automatically heal one health at the end of every fight)

• Great Yellow Dragon - This dragon rules the air. Yes... Like all the other flying dragons. But this one rules it extra special. Your one advantage is bat wings. Yes, bat wings. You can use 2 bat wings for a turn to fly up and meet the dragon on it's own turf and increase your attack power by 5!
15 Attack 80 Health - Reward: 30 Experience, Orb of Air (For quests requiring 4 or more items, this reduces the amount of items needed for a quest by 1).

• Great Novel Dragon - The king of all dragons, the Great Novel Dragon has been featured in stories far and wide. To fell this mighty beast you must be the strongest of all the hero's in all the lands in all the worlds in all the universes and so on and so forth.
25 Attack 150 Health - Reward: 50 Experience, Title of Power (The next NBRC newsletter will hail your praise as the "Great Novel Dragon Slayer" and you will receive a place in the Hall of Fame.)

Quests
The inhabitants of Novel Kingdom have many tasks that need to get done. Sometimes they feel like sitting back, drinking some ale and reading the latest parchment fiction. That's where you come in. Citizens may post quests on the town quest board for you to partake in. Doing so will net you experience in helping your fellow man or woman and sometimes a token of thanks. Occasionally, quests are obtained through sources outside the quest board.

Quests may be embarked upon at any time while they are posted on the quest board and may be completed only once per Hero. During the course of the year, quests may be taken off the board and new quests added. If you have not applied your books towards the completion of a quest you may re-apply them to another purpose if you are unable to complete the quest.

"I wish to hear your juiciest and most rare gossip." he whispers. You wink at him and say, "I have just the stories for you..."

Earn +1 Experience (Max 5 Experience) for each Rare Story book read. Rare Story books must have less than 500 ratings.

Potions and Healing
Potions may be earned through various quests and activities.

Potions
Potions may be used during or after battle. They do not replace your turn during battle and as many potions as you want can be used at any time.

• Minor Heal Potion - Allows healing up to 5 health during a battle.
• Heal Potion - Allows healing up to 10 health during a battle.
• Major Heal Potion - Allows healing up to 15 health during a battle.

• Minor Poison Potion - Poisons the monster causing 2 amount of additional damage at the beginning of the turn.
• Enhanced Weapon Potion - Increases the damage of a weapon by 3 for the remainder of the week.
• Damage Potion - For the remainder of the week attack and magic power are increased by 3 points each.

• Find Items Potion - Magically obtain half the items needed for a specific quest. (Note the use of this potion when turning in your quest. If an odd number of items is required, the potion rounds down the reward. Example: Requires 3 items, potion provides 1. Requires 4 items, potion provides 2.)
• Time Walking Potion - Allows one quest to be completed after it has been removed from the current quest list.

Healing
You may sit down and enjoy a light read to rest and rejuvenate.

• Spell a healing word using Spell-it-Out rules.
   CURE, HEAL, BANDAID, TONIC - 1 hp per letter (or choose your own healing related words)
• Read a book about healing/doctors or with healing in the title. 1 hp per book.

Q: How do I track my progress?
- Create a post
- Add a summary section at the bottom to show the current status of your hero.
- Edit the post and add any quests, levels, fights, etc. in a list from oldest to newest. (Remember, you can only turn in active quests, turning in the quest gives you the reward. You can recover books from quests that expire before you turn them in and use them on different quests.)
- If you run out of characters in your post, create a new post and link back to the previous one.

Q: What books can I count?
You may count any books read in 2015 over 100 pages. If you start after the year begins, you may count books you have already read in 2015 but may not turn in any already expired quests.

Nope, each book may only be used towards one thing. If you have books you think will be useful later on you can always store them. (i.e, if you've read a 10th book in a series and want to hold onto it for use later)

You can level them up as much as you want. It start becoming more difficult as you go since reading a 10 book series is a lot harder than a 6 book series.

I've been doing a 20 height pyramid for a year and a half now and I still have awhile to go. So I figure people will cap out at a certain point just based on practicality but there's no set limit.

Feel free to post questions here too, I'm sure others have questions. We tried to make it as easy to understand as we can but writing good rules is difficult. I'll add things to the FAQ if there's things we didn't cover.

The basic premises is that you read books and can use them as points towards a bunch of different tasks (leveling up weapons, quests, healing, etc.) So the evolution of your character is yours to direct and no one will take the same path.

They'll be new quests posted about monthly and some of the older ones will be removed.

You keep the experience and just add on. It ramps up pretty quickly so levels will get slower.

I have two questions:

1. How do we know about when we can fight a monster. Do you announce when they appear?

2. With the series books for the sword, do they have to be from the same series? Or could I read #1 from one series and then a #2 from a different series for Level 2?
