MountainKat | 31593 comments The Amazing Race Team Challenge
April 11, 2020 through June 9, 2020
8 Week Dash For the Win!

Challenge Dates:
Signups open until April 11, 2020 at 9 PM US EDT.
Remaining Teams Assigned after signups close on April 11, 2020.
First Task Assigned April 14, 2020 at 6 PM US EDT.
Challenge Ends on June 9, 2020 at Midnight US EDT, tasks will not be accepted after this time.

Each team will work together to complete tasks. Once complete, you will be given another task to complete. After the first task, teams will be on different paths with tasks randomly assigned. The same tasks may be assigned to different teams at different times, but no task will be used more than once by the same team. Each team works at their own pace and the team that completes the most tasks at the end of 8 weeks will be the winner!

After the first task is given to everyone, when a team finishes their task they will need to report their completion in the Tracking/Q&A thread. I will confirm the completion and assign their next task. New tasks will not be assigned more frequently than every other day. I will attempt to respond quickly to confirm completion and assign new tasks, but please allow up to 24 hours. If I am unavailable, another mod will assign the task.

Each teammate will need to participate in each task, but may take a pass for one task during the course of the challenge For some tasks, no passes will be allowed. Completions posts will need to be made when finishing each book for a task, similar to the PtP and Bachelor Challenges. A player will be removed if they make no comment for 5 days after a new task is assigned or 3 days after the rest of the team completes the task (whichever is later), despite attempts to make contact.

MountainKat | 31593 comments I think most of you know each other, at least a little, but feel free to introduce yourself again. Please give any relevant information, especially time zone as that helps know when it is best to communicate. 😊

Please select a team leader to help keep track of where your team is in any given task. And as necessary guide discussions for task decisions. Any teammate can report your completions though.

PS - If you want to be known as anything other than Team 1, you are free to come up with a team name. 😉

⚣Michaelle⚣ (michaelle) | 1187 comments Hi everyone! I think I've played at least one game or participated in a challenge with all of you, but as a reminder: I'm in Las Vegas but I tend to check the threads several times a day, usually in the morning, early evening and late at night. If I'm not working, I'll be online most of the time.

I can't captain/lead though; I'm waiting to hear from the Census on whether I'll be hired. *crosses fingers* I have no idea what the schedule will look like at that point, but I might need someone's phone number to text them when I finish a task so that we can move on.

I'm crap at team names, so I'll leave that up to the more creative types!

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Hi all - I'm Jane and I live in Australia. My timezone is such that I'm generally around in your afternoons and evenings.

This is pretty backward but with CV19 I have way less time to read! Because I'm at home 100% I am on call to help my husband around the cattle property when I'm not working. So less and less time to myself - whereas before I used to have long commutes to listen to a heap of audiobooks :( So really don't know how I'll go as a teamie on this! Sorry in advance.

I'd prefer not to Captain but will if no-one else can :) I know Shannon is Captaining (my team) on ScavHunt.

Names - let me think on this and get back. (Dinner is on, and I need to get a few other things done...) No doubt Shannon will have a couple as well ;)

Karen ♐ (kmk1214) | 2041 comments Hi, everyone! I'm Karen. I live in Chicago with my hubby. We are both retired. Believe it or not, but I think I had my reading time when I worked! I'm a night owl so I'm up really late but I do sleep in. At night is when I get most of my reading done.

If you have a problem Michaelle, send me a PM when you finish a task. I'm on GR all through the day so I'll see it.

I am awful thinking up team names but I really like Loitering Layabouts...

If no one else wants to Captain, I could give it a try. I might need some guidance on what to do.

Hi Karen - not sure if we've played together or not... We all play so many different games in a few groups (well, two for me) that its hard to keep track! Looking forward to kick off :)

... I might go poke Shannon :)

I don't think we have, Jane. However, I know I've seen you in different challenges.

Shannon (pokey36) | 1992 comments I've been poked!! Hey ladies, I'm Shannon and I currently live in Washington state but soon to be Oregon...hopefully. I normally live with my hubby and two daughters but my 16 yr old decided to spend the quarantine with a friend instead of us (shocker). But my 19 yr old decided to come home from college in Oregon to spend it with us instead of with her boyfriend. So basically 1 daughter likes us and the other doesn't!! Ahhhh, what a difference that 3 years in age makes.

Karen, go for captain if you'd like. I can help if needed.

I also like Loitering Layabouts because its so Australian Jane!! I want to be a Layabout!!

⚣Michaelle⚣ (michaelle) | 1187 comments 1. Each player reads a book by the same author, teams decide author - no pass for this task. No Preference; please not someone on my NOPE shelf.

9. Read 6 books in the same sub-genre, teams decide. Anything but Rockstars, please

21. Read a book recommended to you by a teammate - no pass for this task. If we could use my YA shelf IF THIS IS CALLED IN APRIL, I would appreciate it; after April, I'd like to have my GB-OPTIONS shelf used.

25. Each player reads a book in a series, teams decide. No pass for this task. No preference (I'm assuming that if we pick a series, and I've already read one or two of them, that I can use the next one up>)

51. Each teammate reads a book published in the same month and year, teams decide. No pass for this task. No Preference, other than the more recent, the better - especially if available on KU

52. Read 6 books set in the same location, teams decide the location. No Preference

53. Each teammate reads a different book by the same author, no pass for this task. No One on my NOPE shelf, please!

58. Read a minimum of 750 pages in books published in any one year prior to 2018, team picks the year. No Preference

59. Read 4 books published in the decade of a teammate's birth, team decides which teammate.
(We really DON'T want this, so means we'll probably get it 🧐) Oh shit. I HOPE we don't get this one...who's the youngest, 'cause there aren't many MM books that I can get quickly from the the 1960s!!!

61. Read a minimum of 1500 pages in books by the same author, teams decide author. No Preference other than No One on my NOPE shelf, please

63. Read over 1000 pages in books that start with the same letter (no articles), teams decide letter. No Preference

64. Each teammate reads a book from a teammate's to-read shelf, no pass for this task. Does this mean ONE of our shelves? If so, FYI, I have - currently - 4230 books on my primary TBR and another 2700 on the back-burner shelf.

65. Read 6 books set in the same country outside the US, teams decide country. No Preference

66. As a team, pick a list with over 100 romance books on it, each member reads a book from that list. No pass for this task. No Preference, other than the Rockstar one, please

67. Read 6 books with a specific item on the cover, team selects item. Do we want to make this easy and say, "Gun" or "Tree"? Naked Chest works, LOL, there's a shit ton of those.

68. Read a minimum of 1000 pages in books written by an author whose first or last name begins with the first letter of a teammate's screen name. I've got books by authors that qualify for all of our names; this is the ONLY task I'd risk someone on my NOPE shelf, but would appreciate avoiding it.

69. Read over 750 pages in books about the same profession, teams decide which profession. Again, please not Rockstar.

73. Read 6 books published in the year one of the teammates joined RRRC, teams decide which teammate. I joined in 2018

75. Read 6 books that have the same romance trope, teams decide which trope. No Preference - but I really like Fake Boyfriends, and Men with Kids.

⚣Michaelle⚣ (michaelle) | 1187 comments I added Fake Boyfriends and Men with Kids to the tropes answer.

Hoping we can do a country for location...maybe even use the MMRG bookselves for location, that way we can be even less specific - like North America in general. We can also use the Listopia States lists if we wanna pick one.

Not in the mood for BDSM right now so if we can avoid that genre I'm good.

For profession, can we have something as general as "LEO" that way Cops, FBI, CIA etc are included? (Or lets do tongue-in-cheek with "essential workers" which can be found here: https://www.cisa.gov/sites/default/fi... )

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Ok - so Michaelle's big author NOs from what I would consider are mainstream MM writers:

TJ Klune
KA Merikan (that's a solid no from me as well ;)
Tinnean
AE Via
NR Walker
AE Wasp

So in my mind avoid NR Walker and TJ Klune.

I'm sure we have plenty more with the likes of Eli Easton, Kim Fielding, Mary Calmes, Alice Winters, Abigail Roux, Megan Derr, KJ Charles, Jordan Castillo Price, Josh Lanyon, Jordan L Hawk, AJ Sherwood, Joanna Chambers, Kaje Harper etc

Throw up some names and lets pick a couple that have a series as well that we can all happily read!

Eh, I forgot there was a book there by Walker. I can do her, especially if we go with Oz for the location. I was mainly NOPE-ing Klune, Via, Tinnean & Merikan (that one is just for now). I also would humbly request no Stormy Glenn or Lynn Hagen.

LOVE KJC, JCP, JL and JLH. I have books on the TBR for all of them. I'd add Joanne Chambers, too. And Kaje Harper. (Looking for J & K authors right now...)

I think Renae Kaye & Sean Kennedy also do books set in Oz...so that's another option. (Kinda liking that option at the moment.)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments LOL - well its easy to go with the UK as a country outside the US so you can happily avoid Walker regardless.

I love Walker's stuff, but it'll fit in plenty of other slots for me :)

I can't see Stormy or Lynn popping up either... I think we need to pick really broad writers with range. The hard one is probably the Series option. Need to work out what series we are reading/happy to reread/ or start...

Another good author with broader appeal is AJ Sherwood. I'll add that to the options above...

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments By the way - the series rule applies for when we need to pick from either the group shelf or teammates' shelves.

***edit***
And I missed this one:

55. Pick another team and each member reads one book that was read by a member for this challenge. No pass for this task.
Q: Do we all have to read from the same (other) team or can we each select any team?"
A: As a team, you select another team and you all read from their books.

Going to suggest we picks from either Team 9 (CoronaVixens) or Team 7, Team 11, Team 13, Team 19. Leaning more toward 9, 7, and 13 because they are solid MM readers.

57. Each teammate reads a book set in one of your teammates' home town, no pass for this task.
Q: So any of our teammates' towns - we can each pick whichever town we like so long as a teammate lives there? or do we need to pick just one town and all read based on that one town?
Again, as a team you will select the home town of one of your teammates and read a book set in that locale. What defines a 'home town' will be defined if announced.

So my State would be Qld - not a lot of choice there!!

Location will likely be defined as State in the US, or Country outside the US :) from Q&A thread.

message 34: by ⚣Michaelle⚣ (last edited Apr 09, 2020 05:21PM) (new)

⚣Michaelle⚣ (michaelle) | 1187 comments For Hometown: I live in Las Vegas, if that helps. (Been here 20+ years.) We got anyone from a bigger city? (If the definition is "birth city" that would suck. City I grew up in is just as bad. Small Southern towns in NC and GA.) Edited to add: Only one I could find for the town I grew up in is Caught Running LOL!

Oh, and I've got tons of options for OZ & UK, as well as Canada. If we do a state, I think New York or California (or even Texas) might be the best bet since they're popular settings.

As for the Author potential, Jordan Castillo Price has stuff that crosses just about all genres, too.

For the series, I think it will be harder. Need to see what genres the team DOES NOT want to read before we can narrow that down. I'm easy with that - all genres work for me - and don't mind re-reads (if they're allowed).

As for team read crossover...I need to see which ones have Eugenia, Trio and Jo. I KNOW they've got books on the TBRs that I can pick from. (Probably others, too, but those are just off the top of my head.) EDITED TO ADD: Yep, team 9 works. As well as 7, 11 & 13.

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Ok - no idea why but when I look at my books down for reading in the next couple of months, the highest recurrence of Month and Year was March 2019 (x6).

This was followed by October 2018 (x4).

Probably only looking at about 40 books so a fairly limited selection.

I have a fair scattering of other months but most of the spread is in 2019.

Given our books HAVE to be at least 150 pages, the Christmas period publication may not be the best...

Other key rules to note:
* Rereads are fine.
* Use the GR Kindle first edition for the posts. (ebook editions only count if there is no Kindle edition.)
* Series rule will apply to tasks where you pick from the group or a teammate's shelf
* Does not have to be romance, but must be fiction.

One of the tasks is NON MPG ROMANCE!! Ack, that one is gonna be tough. I'll probably end up using a YA book. Even those with gay characters don't tend to be MPG MM-Romance. Or maybe I'll try for an older gay fiction book (before MMR was a significant tag.)

...or maybe there are some erotica books without the MMR tag? Any suggestions would be welcome so that I can plan ahead!

I have one that I thought I'd read:
Aunt Sookie & Me - its also in audio :)
and I've also been meaning to read The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time also in audio.

I have They Both Die at the End and it fits - just not sure how sad it is. I'm such a wimp ;)

There's also the chance of mis-shelving - but it would have to be a new release I suspect.

Also I guess we are all MM readers. I havent looked through the cats but do not want to read any MF.
Also the category for birth decade. Thats the 60s for me. I guess thats going to be a fiction book . Ive only read MM for the last 7 years.

My hometown is New Haven, CT. i know some MM from CT, but not sure if any based in New Haven.

Ill put my name on the sign up chart and your team number as long as you are happy with my small number of books a week.
