Firefighter and EMT Derek Mercer didn't believe any good had ever come from a conversation with that particular opener. Still, he wanted to know what was going on with his partner. But when Zander confesses to a shameful act, and then demands to know what Derek is hiding, Derek feels their relationship is about to blow sky high.
For arson investigator Zander Tam, admitting to snooping on his boyfriend wasn't nearly as painful as the idea of losing him. In the heat of the moment, Zander had felt justified; he had to get to the bottom of why Derek spent hours hunched over his laptop, distracted and distant.
But as the two alpha men dig deeper into what's been left unsaid for too long, they uncover an explosive secret, one that has the power to bring them closer together or drive them apart forever.
I dare anyone to read the first chapter and not spontaneously combust. I loved Derek and Zander in the first book, but this novella/sequel/extended happily ever after actually made me tear up in a few places...when I wasn't in danger of melting, of course. And unlike some sappy, OTT deleted scenes other authors have dared to call "stories", this book actually had a plot, dramatic tension, and deep characters that grew as the story progressed. Nix's website hints at a book three in this series--fingers crossed that's true, because I can't get enough of these manly-as-fuck alphas!
A good follow-up to the first book. Derek and Zander have now been together for awhile but Derek wants to have a place to call home. Zander is happiest moving from hotel suite to hotel suite and dreads settling in a house. This novella shows how the two men overcome (with help) their stand-off in between some hot sex scenes. Liked the realistic time lines in the book and loved how Derek and Zander communicated in and out of the bedroom.
Alot of this book dealt with Zander and his therapy about his PTSD. There was lightish bdsm and manties (shudder) but a very happy ending for both men.
Another reviewer complained that Derek and Zander weren't the same characters as in book one. No, they weren't. They were characters that reflected the changes they'd gone through as a result of the trauma they experienced. Derek and Zander have now been together a couple of years. So they know each other on an even deeper level. The new sort of life they were thrust into, has obscured issues that they don't yet know about each other. This is a story showing a couple that gives each other room to grow and change, while still maintaining the strong foundations they've established. Derek is still funny and strong and insightful. Zander is still somewhat closed off to his own needs. He feels he has to overcome everything by his strength of will alone. They work through very real issues with humor and strength, and more importantly, communication. And they still do it as manly as f**k! Wonderful sequel.
It was great to see Derek and Zander again. They work as a couple on so many levels, even when faced with difficulties, internal and external. They're both really kinky boys, with a strong love for each other, and that just ups their appeal. I would be happy to read about their exploits in as many stories as this author would create (hint, hint).
