Rachel (stillchasethewind) | 452 comments Here there's no toilet paper, paper towels, instant noodles, pasta, tomato sauce, Tylenol, or cold medicine on the shelves. People are just going nuts with hording supplies. I hope this blows over soon. As time is passing people are getting more and more paranoid.

As for the hand sanitizer thing, I work in a medical laboratory and we are not allowed to use hand sanitizer. We MUST wash our hands with soap and water (while reciting the ABCs). So really hand washing and not touching your face are the best things to do (or not do). I agree though Kristie, it is amazing how many people don't think of washing their hands but are abusing hand sanitizer. Hopefully we do not end up creating super resistant bacterial infections.

That makes me sad.

Diana Gotsch | 55 comments Our library here in Indiana announced today that will be closed as of Monday for a month. I had been laughing at the about the toilet paper hoarding. But I couldn't get to my local branch fast enough. If I am going to be shut up in the house for weeks I need books.

Kristie | 5928 comments Hahaha.. I just said to my husband that I should grab a bunch of books in case our library closes. Then, I decided I should just get electronic ones so I don't have to worry about who handled the books before me. 🤦🏼‍♀️🤷‍♀️

My grandson's school has closed for at least two weeks. They will reevaluate at that time whether or not they will be returning then. I think I'd better stock up on art supplies and things to do in case he ends up visiting with us for a while. Fortunately, for now his dad is able to work from home for the two weeks, but he probably won't be allowed to for much longer than that.

Rachel (stillchasethewind) | 452 comments So far we've been lucky. Day care is still open and they say they will remain open. I have no idea what we will do if they have to close too.

Hello from Canada's Pacific Coast! Like most of you, I'm staying home until the Covid 19 goes away. I'll probably finish reading Middlemarch by then.

Before the virus showed up, I had planned a drive to Seattle at this very time. In previous car trips, I'd stop by in Kirkland for a sandwich, before heading south to Seattle. Like a ritual, I did it to psych up my provincial Canadian self - before checking out the gleaming skyscrapers and hustle-and-bustle of American enterprise. But Kirkland has one of the worst outbreaks now. It's very sad.

message 59: by Groovy (last edited Mar 16, 2020 11:10AM) (new)

Groovy Lee LOL! Kristie. Right? I know what you mean. Before all of this started, I would keep hand sanitizers on hand and constantly wash my hands. And I made my complaining daughter use hand sanitizers constantly. Now she's thankful. But the fact that people have to be reminded is indeed concerning.

We went in search of toilet paper yesterday. ALL of the store shelves are empty of both hand sanitizers and toilet paper. Why are people hoarding these? It's ridiculous.

I've been keeping these two basics stocked up way before this happened in case something like this happens. So we're okay for at least a month. I hope you are too, Kristie. After that, I don't know what we're going to do.

I'm also glad that the children are spared.

Kristie | 5928 comments I am all set here for supplies for a while and since everything has been cancelled I'm home.

Our stores are pretty bare. There is very little produce and meats. Canned goods have been picked over. There are no sanitizers or toilet paper. They are now limiting how much you can buy. I'm hoping supplies pick up a bit as people settle in.

Same here, Kristie. For years we were advised to keep at least a week or two worth of unperishable foods in case something like this happens. So we're set, and I would always keep sanitizers and toilet paper stocked. People are being very selfish. They announced on TV that there was no food shortage. If you need anything just go pick it up. But do you think people are listening?

I agree. I hope people calm down so that the store shelves can be restocked, and everyone can have a chance to get what they need.

Hang in there, everyone. Try to stay positive. The world will survive this:)

Hope you have a great day, too, Christine!

I think some people are still in denial and are maybe making fun of the response and some are maybe trying to make light of it. 🤷‍♀️ I don't know...

Rachel (stillchasethewind) | 452 comments Like all the dummies partying on the beach in Florida? Silly young people think they are immune.

message 72: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments Oh, I know. I also know of some older adults that think the response is "ridiculous" and are ignoring guidelines. It's very frustrating to those of us trying to do our part.

message 73: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Is it Spring already, Christine? I've been so absorbed in the pandemic I forgot. I have to start ordering my garden things:)

I know what you mean, Rachel, and Kristie. I saw the irresponsible nitwits on the beach making fun of this and mocking the whole ordeal. One young man said if he gets it, he gets it, it's not going to stop him from partying.

They don't understand that they are carriers. I wonder how many of them contracted it on the beaches and will now take it home to their parents and grandparents? And do you know the virus is changing and starting to affect children? We have an 11 year old here in Nashville that has it. And yesterday they announced an 18 month old with it, but it's not severe.

Whether you agree with the seriousness of it or not. You should still do your part to help stop it from spreading.

Valentina (decastrovalen) I found myself without any motivation to keep reading, it's been some crazy days so I was wondering if any of you could help me or sharing experiences maybe to cheer me up

message 78: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments I've been struggling with focusing on my reading this week too, Val.

I started crocheting a scarf for my daughter's dog last night. He's a bigger dog and he loves to wear clothes! I figured it would be a small enough project that I might actually finish it.

I think I may check out the tv show Schitt's Creek this week too. I keep hearing that it's really funny, but I've never seen it.

message 81: by Valentina (new)

Valentina (decastrovalen) This really helps me, thank you so much.

I'm definitely going to try something new like you did, maybe I'll be crocheting for my dog too or watch the entire Netflix catalog.

message 84: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (last edited Mar 22, 2020 06:23PM) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments Val, if you don't have a Kindle you can download the Kindle app to your phone, laptop, iPad, etc. Then, you will still have access to any ebooks offered through Amazon. Even without unlimited or prime there are plenty of free books you can download.

My library is also closed, but we still have access to all of the ebooks and mp3 audio files online. I use the overdrive app for those. I will never run out of things to read!

I have so much to do at my house. I'm practically an activity hoarder. lol I buy a lot of different craft projects, but never have time to do them. I am definitely keeping busy.

I also have an instant pot that I bought a long time ago and never use. I'm going to try out a couple of recipes and see if I can figure that thing out!

Groovy Lee I say thank goodness for electronic readers, or we would all be deprived of one of our favorite hobbies. I don't know how we got along without these when I was growing up.

I know it can get a bit depressing, Val. But the whole world is pulling together, the governments are doing the best they can, and we're going to get through this. We all just have to do our part.

I just wish the panic buying would stop.

Kristie | 5928 comments Groovy wrote: "I just wish the panic buying would stop."

Me too! I might head out tomorrow to get a few things. I've been home for a full week already. I didn't want to go out this evening because there won't be anything left on the shelves.

message 91: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee The major stores here have shortened their hours so that after everybody leaves, they can restock the shelves. Let's hope that makes a difference.

message 92: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments I have to admit that I am quite entertained by some of the Corona songs that are coming out of this. People are really creative and some of their songs are really funny. (Fair warning, there is some cursing in the following videos. There's not a lot, but if you are opposed to any bad language you may want to skip them.)

I've just discovered Chris Mann, so here are a couple of his videos:

https://youtu.be/ojrtwXqqc6g

There are a lot of other people with great videos out there now too. Seems like they all have some free time.

Groovy Lee I don't know who Chris Mann is, either. But I absolutely LOVE these videos. I can't wait to show my daughter when she gets home. Thanks for this, Kristie. They are soooo funny. BTW, I look at PLUTO, so the curse words don't make me jump anymore when I hear them--LOL!

If any of you haven't seen them yet. You should take a look. He's hilarious!

Groovy Lee Hi, Sagar. You be safe, too. We managed to find some toilet paper and paper towels today. But still no hand sanitizer or bleach cleaners. I hope all of you are getting what you need.

I also saw a group of adults running around and playing together. That's kind of concerning. Looks like this virus is going to be here for awhile because some people aren't taking it serious. Since yesterday, here in TN, the increase in those with the virus has risen over 100.
