HAPPY DECEMBER, Christine! And to Everyone!!!

Did you know that it's only 3 weeks untill Christmas now?

Hope everything is ok if you are unable to get on the site and that you have a good Christmas too. I hope some of those Christmas presents from the bookstore were for you!

Did you know that it's only 3 weeks untill Christmas now?"
My son told me three weeks the other day. I bought some Disney books for my two year old great grandson and one was Nemo. I am crocheting a Nemo but not sure I will finish it. I will still give him the books but Nemo may have to follow later.

I started decorating yesterday. I need to go through all of my holiday decorations and reorganize everything, which I'm not looking forward to. It will be nice to have it done though and to have some holiday cheer in the house. I just need to make sure everything gets put away properly this year.
I made a list of holiday movies to watch this season. I ended up with 2-3 each week until Christmas. :) I've seen most of them multiple times, but they are still good fun.
I started to crochet a scarf for my daughter's dog. I know that sounds weird. lol She loves to hike and her dog loves clothes, which is really funny. He gets very excited when he gets to dress up, which is rare. So, I thought she would enjoy a doggie scarf for him to wear when they go hiking in the cold. I am not a crocheter. I saw them at a craft fair last year and thought they were cute. I probably should have just bought her one, but I relearned how to crochet basic stitches and decided to do it on my own. At the rate I'm going she may get it next year. lol It's the thought that counts, right?

I have never seen a doggie scarf and a cute idea. It is the thought that counts. My daughter does cover their dog when he is outside with them for hours. You tube has great ideas on crocheting. I like Fiber Flux for one.

I used to buy most of my books from The Book Depository until Covid-19 caused our postal service to become unreliable. Now I buy most of my books on Kindle.

It is an eye-opening book about Intensive Farming and how it differs in each country around the world. A disturbing but powerful read.
Watch out for my review in the new year.

And please, BE SAFE!!

I started a book today. I will not finish it today. Does this book count as a read in 2020 or 2021?
Just trying to figure out how to update my reading challenge/ log.

When you post to GR it will update as read in 2021. It always counts when you finished it as the read date.

I, as a Christian, have a question for those of you who aren’t Christians:
Suppose you have a friend who is a Christian, who’s kind and selfless and dedicated to others and to God. You know he/she doesn’t watch the bad parts in the movie Titanic but skips them as is done with all other movies he/she watches. Do you have no respect for her faith just because she watched the movie, even when she edits it? Do you consider his spiritual life fake, his reputation as a Christian bad because he viewed a certain movie with a couple parts that he chose to skip?
If not, why?
Don’t be afraid to be honest in answering!

I guess what I don't understand is why someone would judge someone's faith based upon what they watch on TV or read in a book for that matter. I have watched Titanic. I understand that some of the decisions they make in the movie are not Christian decisions, but I don't think you need to shelter yourself from the world to be a good/true Christian.

To be clear, I have not seen Titanic yet, but I have heard much of it and have even seen the trailer. And of course I have my own standards for what’s appropriate in films, neither lax nor strict. For instance, provided the film has redeeming qualities, I’ll fast-forward any sex/nude scenes, extremely gory parts (Saving Private Ryan and Passion of the Christ are exceptions), and I’ll mute out bad words depending on the situation. Sometimes it will all depend on the film, sometimes on what message it teaches. But sex and nude parts are a no-no. But Schindler’s List is different regarding nudity, since it was not shown to promote it or to incite lust. That’s the difference between the nudity shown in Schindler’s List and Titanic.
I would like to get a device called ClearPlay that you can attach to your TV and it will edit out anything bad for you; you don’t even have to use a remote control.
Anyway, those are my standards. Mind sharing yours? I won’t judge if yours differ than mine; I never do. Non-Christians are free to comment if they wish!

The most religious in my extended family don't watch TV at all and many of the more religious would skip the salacious bits.
On the other hand when I worked in the library it was an education seeing the range of books the religious women chose - from religious philosophy to romance and sci-fi.
I tend to judge people on how they behave to others not what they watch or read.

I talked to my daughter about how I'd have to miss a good plot because I couldn't stand hearing the foul words. She said something that really helped me. She said hearing that word doesn't bother her because the "F" word is spoken so much in her office everyday, that it just flies over her head, and it doesn't even register anymore. So I decided to get used to hearing it on the movies. And now it doesn't even effect me anymore. I wish they'd stop using it, but now I can concentrate on the "redeeming" plot, and barely get effected by it. This may not work for everyone. Of course, I skip through sex scenes and salaciousness.

I’m with you in the respect of quality films and their language. It can be so off-putting and intrusive to have to listen to foul language spoken in your own home. Would you in fact put up with someone who had entered your home and began talking to you use words like that? I believe I hear a resounding NO from people who expect
better from film-makers. We watch tv to be entertained after all. I often switch off when confronted with bad films and tv programmes. Your choice.

I forgot to say to everyone here that, though I haven’t seen Avatar, I know there’s partial nudity in it. But the reason why I’d watch it regardless is because, for one thing, the women are in tribal clothing. We Christians read missionary stories and they have photos of the tribes they reach out to that have little or no clothes, and we aren’t the least bothered upon seeing it. So if Christians aren’t going to see Avatar because the tribal women wear very little (and it’s all CGI), then they shouldn’t look at those missionary photos or even National Geographic pictures (which definitely isn’t CGI). Of course, I’m aware the partial nudity isn’t the only issue Christians have with Avatar but that’s beside the point. When I said nude parts are a no-no for me, I meant I won’t view any nudity that’s clearly shown to arouse people. (Like in The Notebook or Atonement, which I haven’t seen either.). But the nudity in Schindler’s List, Beyond the Gates of Splendor, and Avatar is clearly not in that category.
Just thought I’d clarify.
