I wondered the same thing since it had 14 votes, which is a lot for one of our group polls.

Personally, I didn't have anything burning up my TBR for this theme, and that's why I didn't vote for it. Hopefully there'll be more noms over the next couple days.

Toviel (exagge) | 1 comments Somehow, I completely missed this thread! In my defense, I just finished a major move, and thus had other things on my mind. Like a few others here, I'll just update the list as I finish books.

1. Water Creatures
2. Fairies/Changelings:
Witches/Crones: The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley
-- A significant chunk of the book involves several main characters' grappling with donning the "Crone" or "Death-Crone" of the Goddess specifically.
4. Nature Spirits/Green Man
5. Dragon
Djinn: The Last Wish by Andrzej Sapkowski
-- Collection of dark twists on classic fairy tales, the final of which involves the main character(s) trying to dispel a curse cast by a djinn (the titular "last wish").
7. Tricksters
8. Shapeshifters
9. Ghosts
10. Cats

Asaria | 814 comments 2. Fairies/Changelings
Rhapsodic by Laura Thalassa. I desperately searched for something that would fulfill the criteria of the challenge. Way outside of my comfort zone, but I also wanted to see how Paranormal Romances usually are written. Definitely not my cup of tea.

4. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight: With Pearl and Sir Orfeo

5. Dragons - Dary Bogów (The gifts of Gods) -Retelling of Slavic mythology.

Initially, I planned to exclude books unavailable in English for the sake of consistency. To no avail, as usual. I'm still on the fence whether I should switch it for something else.

I'm cheating here. It is a collection of short stories, with the narrator serving as a framing device (Fun!). Think Henson's "The Storyteller". The Dragon is Zhmiy, the Guardian of Navia (Slavic Underworld), in this retelling one of Chernabog and Mokosh' sons, who is cursed with a repulsive to him human shape.

That leaves me with 6. Djinn. The most natural choice seems The Golem and the Jinni or A Dead Djinn in Cairo, which are out of question as I'm not keen on rereading them. I'm tempted to pick uncensored One Thousand and One Nights: Complete Arabian Nights Collection but it's doubtful I'd finish it on time. I have no idea what to read for this.

I readDjinn City for this category.
It was good because it not only has lots of Djinn, but because takes place in Bangladesh and the author is from there. I felt like I was transported while reading it.
My rating is 3 because I was disappointed by the last few chapters but otherwise it kept me captivated.
Even though the author of Alif the Unseen is American I felt her depiction of the Arabian Gulf States was accurate. I really loved it, but I remember one of the members here said the computer part was inaccurate
The City of Brass was highly disappointing for me. I was excited about the setting in Cairo, but it's just the first chapter and the rest was just like regular fantasy for me.
I have not read the others Margaret mentioned

Julia (ultramarine) | 52 comments Jalilah wrote: "Can someone please explain why the writing turns out like this sometimes? I've edited and still can't get it how it usually is"

I guess that's because you were quoting Asaria and there was an unclosed book tag at the end of that quote (if you click "Reply", Goodreads limits quote to a certain number of characters and then adds ellipsis at the end, unfortunately in this case it happened in the middle of the book tag). Then i closing tag somehow got into this broken book tag and wasn't interpreted correctly, so your whole comment was displayed in italics.

I cannot be sure unless I publish a comment and see how Goodreads display it, so let me do some testing ;)

1. I removed the book tag:
Asaria wrote: "8. Shapeshifters - Blanca & Roja
10. Cats - Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats

That leaves me with 6. Djinn. The most natural choice seems"

2. I manually closed the book tag (I had to delete it first and then look for the book by myself because the tag was broken):
Asaria wrote: "8. Shapeshifters - Blanca & Roja
10. Cats - Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats

That leaves me with 6. Djinn. The most natural choice seems The Golem and the Jinni"

3. No changes in the quote:
Asaria wrote: "8. Shapeshifters - Blanca & Roja
10. Cats - Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats

That leaves me with 6. Djinn. The most natural choice seems The Golem and the Ji..."</i>

If this sentence is displayed in italics, my theory is correct ;)

4. It was not italics, so I came up with another idea :D. Weeeell, it is now, I broke it on purpose, then I fixed it, but it remains in italics, Goodreads messes sth up here. But you could also have added a square closing bracket after i closing tag. So i tag was interpreted as a part of the book tag.
Asaria wrote: "8. Shapeshifters - Blanca & Roja
10. Cats - Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats

Now, this part is definitely italics, but I also messed sth up here :D I'm giving up :D

message 34: by Julia (new)

Julia (ultramarine) | 52 comments All right, I looked into source code and i closing tag somehow was interpreted as part of a link, a tag. Sth I named "book tag" is in the practice rendered as a link, but you cannot edit the link itself. I don't know where you put the square closing bracket, but I'm quite sure the code in my comment is now correct, but after I broke it once, it will be apparently broken forever :D

So... definitely, there is some bug on Goodreads part.

I only have djinn left. I thought I had an arc I was going to read (I'm currently reading January-March 2021 titles), but I see the book I was thinking of, A Master of Djinn, releases in May. So maybe I'll find a backlist book to listen to on audio? Or I could go ahead and jump to May. I haven't decided! I've read most of the djinn books mentioned here.

What did you read for the Djinn category?

I read a lot of excellent witch books this year.

I still haven't read a djinn book, so I'm interested in what you read for that!

I read quite a few water creatures' books this year, but most of them were okay but not great. Usually, I enjoy books with water creatures.

I'm writing an adult fantasy novel with dragons in it right now. :) I will say, while I loved books with dragons in them as a child and teen, many of those books don't hold up as well as an adult, and there just aren't that many dragon books for adults that are super great. There are some exceptions, and I know I haven't read them all!

I looked at your above list and saw you read The Golem and the Jinni for your Djinn book. It's so good, I agree!

I'm there with Amanda. I read Uprooted when it first came out, but couldn't get into the same author's Temeraire series or The Golem and the Djinni.

I'm so busy the past year or two with research reading (including a lot of historical fiction) that challenge books have to really engage me for me to want to finish them.

That said, I've struck gold with several challenge picks[this year: [book:I, Tituba, Black Witch of Salem|6157650] and Lolly Willowes for witches; The Star Child for Fae; The Guinevere Deception.

And for nature spirits I was lucky to stumble on Marissa Doyle's latest magical historical Evergreen, a YA set in 1901 in which the MC is a dryad whose best friend is Theodore Roosevelt's famously ungovernable daughter Alice.

I enjoyed both of these:
The Golem and the Jinni
The Djinn Falls in Love & Other Stories

I also want to read Islam, Arabs, and the Intelligent World of the Jinn.

Annette | 271 comments I really enjoyed the green man theme. It was the comparison of the many different Sir Gawain & the Green Knights that I’ve read over the past two years. Then the green man art books I chose really sparked my creative side.

I loved [book:The Golem and the Jinni
! I have been waiting in anticipation for the sequel."

I changed my read for Dragons. I was hesitant about Uprooted because of many members lukewarm reactions. If it had real Polish folktales I might reconsider but I think I am going to read The Future Falls. It is the 3rd in a series. I read the first two a number of years ago. There is a character who turns into a real life dragon. It also has a lot of bad reviews however, so if I can't get into it I will still reread The Painted Boy which I remember liking very much . There's also a real dragon in it too and I can definitely recommend it!

I don't think there is a lot of Polish Fairy Tales present in it. Not even one comes to my mind. The whole thing is Naomi Novik grew up with translated French tales adapted by Natalia Gałczyńska. "Agnieszka piece of heaven" retold in "Uprooted" is one of them. This fairy tale isn't widely read in Poland. Everybody knows the legend of the Golden Duck dwelling in Warsaw, faustian Twardowski or Wawel Dragon. But "Agnieszka skrawek nieba"? Before "Uprooted" I didn't know it exists at all! In her defense, Novik was writing imagined Polish land of her childhood. Still, the setting feels quite generic, imho :(. The Forest excluded, ofc. It's cool.

It gets quite good ratings on Polish blogs, most issues being pacing and character development.

I'm tempted to review "Uprooted" strictly from a cultural point of view.
