Rebecca Kim Wells is the author of Shatter the Sky, Storm the Earth, and Briar Girls (forthcoming in Fall 2021). When not writing, reading, or talking about writing or reading, she sells books at a fiercely independent bookstore in Massachusetts. She can also be found drinking tea, singing along to musicals, or playing soccer. (Usually not all at once.) If she were a hobbit, she would undoubtedly be a Took.

I talked about one of the specific inspirations in a different question, so I'll talk guiding principles here: I wanted to write an unapologetic bisexual heroine in a world where being queer is unremarkable. I wanted to write an adventure featuring a girl who is afraid of the world, but finds her strength when it counts--who was never told she was special, but proves her worth through her own grit and determination. Plus dragons, of course!(less)

I aspire to write books that engage the emotions as well as she does.

And I can't answer this question without referencing the queen of children's fantasy, Diana Wynne Jones. Her books are unparalleled in their creativity and the way they speak to children. I aspire to write something as surprising and yet completely natural as the Chronicles of Chrestomanci or Howl's Moving Castle.

I also read and reread a LOT of Tamora Pierce's Song of the Lioness quartet when I was a kid. :)(less)
