I think they show up in the Gallifrey series. 😼

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments I know the Deadly Assassin version of the Master shows up in BF, but I wish the show had brought him back for a story between this one and Keeper of Traken.

Think we should have gotten a middle story before Anthony Ainely showed up.

Leela! Forgot how much i Like her.
Face of evil to Invasion of time was the block of episodes my local PBS station played the most.
She and K-9 are still one of my favorite pairings of companions.

I've been tempted, but they did a sequel novel years ago, and it was pretty blah and soured me on tracking down other sequels.

I'll probably check them out at some point, as I love the world created by the original story.

message 408: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments I haven’t listened to them (yet?) but I guess it starts with
Doctor Who: Robophobia &
Doctor Who: The Sons of Kaldor

Before continuing in
Doctor Who: Ravenous 2

And then
The Robots, Volume One
The Robots, Volume Two
The Robots Volume Three

And the forthcoming
The Robots Volume Four

Yeah, I'm weak, so I started doing some research. Good amount of stuff out there.

Only thing saving me from BF related bankruptcy is that I'm more addicted to getting all the books.

and the only CD player I have is in my car.

Otherwise, I'd be doomed.

Fiona McGier | 75 comments We just re-watched Face of Evil last night! I LOVE all 9 of the Leela episodes--that was when I started watching the doctor. So Tom Baker was my first--used to be my favorite, until Matt Smith. But Leela was the very best companion. I loved their inter-play, when he calls her "savage," and she tries so hard to learn from him. And her ending is perfect--staying on Gallifrey with one of the guards. He'll have to mind his manners--Leela could take him anyday--and win! LOL.

BTW, I sub in high schools, and have subbed for a Leela. When I asked if her parents like Doctor Who, she rolled her eyes--"Yeah. Too much." I've also subbed for a couple of Tegans, whose parents also honored their favorite show. I wanted Tegan, which means "Poet" for my daughter--but our husband didn't. At least I got to pick her middle name.

Don’t think I’ve ever met a Leela. And I know I’ve never met a Tegan. Or an Adric for that matter. 😼

Rick | 2260 comments I just picked up the Sarah Jane Smith: The Complete Series 1-2 from Big Finish. They’re set after the K-9 and Company: A Girl’s Best Friend (1981) Xmas special/pilot that never got continued into a series and before Sarah Jane’s return in School Reunion (2006). These audios were produced from 2002 to 2005, so the predate her return in the new series and thus the Sarah Jane Adventures TV series. It will be interesting to see how the feel and fit in with her appearances on TV. Sadly these are Elisabeth Sladen’s only appearances as Sarah Jane with Big Finish (she appears in a couple other things, but not as Sarah Jane). I’ll probably start them after I finish The Confessions of Dorian Gray series, which I’m really enjoying by the way.

I don’t know if you know but Louise Jameson continues with the character Leela in the long running Big Finish Gallifrey series. I haven’t started that series yet, but a friend of mine loves them.
I did enjoy The Eighth of March, which features Leela meeting River Song in one of the episodes.

Leela worked really well as a companion.
Like Jamie, she had an excuse for asking a ton of questions.

Also, like Jamie, she looked good in a short skirt...

The two K-9's showed up in oner of the novels and I thought it was brilliant.

I had this vision off the Time Lords mass producing K-9's, as they were the trendy new pet/household device on Galifry.

Rick | 2260 comments Travis wrote: "My daughter was doing some online thing, and it asked 'The three movies that define your personality.' ..."

Whoa ... that’s deep.

I’m gonna have to think about what those films are. Cuz it’s not: “what are your 3 favorite films?” Yep, gotta think on this one.

And I just watch a great 42 minute clip of Kevin Smith talking with John Lithgow and Peter Weller about Buckaroo Banzai. And I should totally be in bed right now.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments So, tis the season and all that: What are everybodys' favorite Doctor Who Christmas episodes?
Let's go with your favorite one from each Doctor.

My list:

Next Doctor: why haven't Jackson and company gotten a BF spin-off yet?

Last Christmas: Santa teams up with the Doctor to fight brain sucking aliens!

The Snowmen: Richard Grant, a new console room, the Paternoster gang, a weird Victoria vibe and carnivorous snow men!

K-9 and company: this can be my honorable mention

message 432: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Sounds fun. My list:

The Runaway Bride (2006): We meet Donna! And it’s not overwhelmingly Xmas themed. I mean, who gets married on Christmas?! 😹

I do love Last Christmas with all the allusions to Alien and The Thing (two of my favorites films), but I’ve got to go with Twice Upon a Time (2017). I cry through almost the entire episode every time I’m watching it. And I love the interplay between 12 & 1.2 (See Peter Capaldi is 12 and with Willian Hartnell being 1, that makes Richard Hurndall 1.1 and David Bradley is then 1.2 - awesome) 😻

And then A Christmas Carol (2010): I love the interactions between young Kazran and the Doctor. It’s actually so rare to find these warm interactions between the Doctor and teenage boys, as the companions are mostly young women, so when it does happen it’s so affirming of why teenage boys are such fans of the series.

I also do enjoy K-9 & Company: A Girl’s Best Friend (1981) but it didn’t officially air on Xmas. Still it’s a lot of fun. But I’ll use my honorable mention to bring up The Feast of Steven (1965), which did air on Xmas day and included the meta-moment of the Doctor turning to the audience (by looking into the camera) and wishing everyone a “Happy Christmas.”

message 433: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Okay, on second thought - yeah, Runaway Bride is rampant with Xmas. But all I readily remember is Donna in her wedding dress and all the shenanigans. It’s just so funny! “Jump!” ... “I’m in my wedding dress!” “And you look lovely! Now come on!”

I always forget Bride is a Christmas episode.

Also, I much as I love 'Twice upon', my brain tends to catalog it as a regeneration story.

My FAVORITE is the Christmas with the Narnia theme, and the trees. I cry at the end every time I see this one! When her husband comes home? No finer moment to me. But then I'm a tree-hugging dirt-worshipper and old hippie. So this episode works for me on so many levels. Even the comedy bits of the 3 astronauts.

That being said, in my family of 6, I think the Christmas Carol one is probably everyone else's favorite.

message 436: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Travis wrote: "... I much as I love 'Twice upon', my brain tends to catalog it as a regeneration story."

But there’s all that stuff about “Christmas in the Trenches.”

Check out: Christmas in the Trenches or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5on4...

I got to hear John McCutcheon perform this live and it is a song that always makes me cry like a baby. So Twice Upon a Time has a special connection for me.

Ah, the choices!
The Christmas Invasion: I admit it up front. I like this because it's fun. Who'd've thought that Jackie would be nearly taken out by a spinning Christmas tree?

The Husbands of River Song: I'm not a fan of River Song, by a long shot, but by golly, she's actually likeable in this story. It took a while, but I love the interaction between 12 and River, which is surprisingly sweet (and so on point for an aroace).

The End of Time: Parts 1 & 2: I like spectacle.

Twice Upon a Christmas: is just wonderful and special.

Doctor, Widow and the Wardrobe made my honorable mention list.
I prefer the whimsical, fun specials to the more serious ones.

message 439: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Robots of death: Not a Christmas story, but I just finished rewatching it and it's one of my all time fave stories.

Love the world building, love the design, nice mystery, the Doctor and Leela are so well written and D84 is on my list of supporting cast that should have become companions.

a sequel or spin off is always on my fanfic wish list.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments So, everyone survive the holiday?

Weather turned nasty, so we went and visited our parents and then crashed at home with too much food and a lot of cheesy TV.

My mother in law found me a copy of the Witchhunters and as a present to myself, I am probably going to buy one of the Troughton reconstructions, rather then wait for Britbox to offer it.

The Tenth Doctor teaming up with Past companions sounds good, but aside from K-9 being in every story, the descriptions sound a bit ...meh.

Also a sad reminder that we've lost a lot of Who people, so there's a limited pool to draw from.
