Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Been binging the Tom Baker era and just had the sad revelation that I only have two more Sarah Jane stories left.

Gonna miss her.

message 252: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments I miss her too.

message 253: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments For my generation, Sarah Jane is THE Who girl, and then, when she came back, a bunch of the youngsters got to understand why she was kind of a big deal.

Rewatching her, her chemistry with Tom Baker, how well she dances between damsel and independent career woman/heroine, not to mention the fact that despite some questionable 70's eyeliner, she is just breathtakingly pretty, has been a nice reminder, why I love this show and how much I'm gonna miss Sarah Jane.

Gonna have to throw a glass in the fireplace when I get to Hand of fear.

message 254: by Fiona (new)

Fiona McGier | 75 comments I like Sarah Jane, despite her loud screaming. But my favorite will always be Leela. I love her leather outfits! And she has that totally charming ability to be vulnerable, like when she thinks everyone is laughing at her on the "the quest is the quest" episode, or when the doctor teases her because she doesn't understand technology. But then she's a warrior of the "sevateam," who can fight anyone, anytime, and if not win, at least cause them some damage. In the "Talons of Wang Chiang", she utterly rules every scene she's in.

That being said, the episode where an older Sarah Jane comes back when David Tennant is the doctor, is priceless. She tries to explain to Rose how dull her life will be when, inevitably, the doctor leaves her behind. And you can feel her pain, and her yearning for her younger days as his companion, and just the tiniest bit of jealousy--but also, the knowledge that HE hasn't aged, but she has--so her time with him is in the past.

message 255: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments And she not only realizes that she’s aged more than him, but that he looks younger, again, than he did. But yes, that reunion episode is a favorite of mine. I also enjoy the episodes of Sarah Jane Adventures that David Tennant & Matt Smith guest star in.

message 256: by Fiona (new)

Fiona McGier | 75 comments OOH! I'll have to get the husband to look for those episodes. We've watched some of the Sarah Jane Adventures, but apparently not all of them. Thanks!

message 257: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments The Wedding of Sarah Jane - Season 3 - David Tennant
The Death Of the Doctor - Season 4 - Matt Smith

message 258: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Tried my first New Who Target novelization.
Seemed appropriate to go with Rose.

Pretty good. Like that they captured the look of the original Targets.
Decent read. Russell was trying a little too hard in some spots, but otherwise fun and I'm definitely going to get some more of them.

message 259: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Brit box just added two more Troughton stories!

Underwater Menace this weekend!

message 260: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments On DVD in the US The Underwater Menace only survives as two episodes. The other two are audio with stills from the production. It’s fun, classic Troughton, but it would be a lot better if they’d animated the two lost episodes.

message 261: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments The only novelization was I’ve read was Doctor Who and the Day of the Daleks. I read it many, many years ago and I’d thought I was getting the “first” Doctor Who adventure. Clearly there was no easy informational access via the internet in those dark “dinosaur” days.

message 262: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments I am seriously addicted to the Target novelizations.

For the longest time they were my only access to the older Doctor's stories.
I am three short of having the entire collection.
So nice to see them bringing them back for new who.

message 263: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Razza-frazzin &^%$!

The Troughton episodes are in the buy/rent section!
Gotta wait.

message 264: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Sorry

message 265: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments They're coming out with a set that collects K-9's first story (Invisible Enemy) and the K9 and company special.

Very cool. Gonna need to make shelf space for that.

message 266: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Must be a reissue, I’ve a set with both those stories since 2011.

https://smile.amazon.com/Doctor-Who-I...

Or am I missing something?

message 267: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Don't know.
Never saw it before today.

message 268: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Hmm, I’ll have to check on City of Death and see if that’s getting reissued.

message 269: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Nope. $350.65. Too rich for me. Sad as it’s the last surviving story that I don’t own. I still need a few Troughton stories, but I’m waiting for them to get reissues on CD. Probably next year.

message 270: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Forgot how nice the secondary control room design, from the Baker era, was.
Very stylish and I like the references to past Doctors, while #4 is explaining it to Sarah.

gonna have to use it, if I continue my Who fanfic.

message 271: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Masque of Mandragora: haven't seen this in probably twenty years and most of my memories come from the Target novelization.

Really fun story. Good looking, nice use of some history not set in Britain.
Bit weird to see Tom Baker so action hero. Almost feels like a leftover Pertwee script.
Was amused by all the Italians with heavy English accents and to discover that I've been mispronuncing Madragora all this time.

One more Sarah Jane to go...

message 272: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Not mispronouncing, just differ emphasis. Rather like Oh-meh-gah verses Oh-meg-ah.

Although...
“Day-tah. Dah-tah. What’s the difference?”
“One is my name, the other is not.”

I really like this story and the music is quite good too.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments NASA says they have an announcement about the moon.

It's gonna be about the space dragon.

The moon is NOT an egg! 🙄

message 278: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Travis wrote: "Oh, I see, you're one of those science deniers."

Yes, I use science to refute & rebuke the deniers. 😹😹😹

And you’re one those who pass judgement on anyone who doesn’t agree with them? 😹😹😹

message 279: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Now, I get it's hard to deal with the truth about the moon and the space dragons, but lashing out isn't helping.

Accept the truth and you'll feel better.
It's not like it's one of those jerk dragons from 'Reign of fire'.

message 280: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Keep living in your fantasy world. Everyone knows that the only REAL dragons were genetically engineered to fight Thread on the planet Pern.

message 281: by Travis (new)

I can't say anything mean or jokey about Anne McCaffrey!

🤣🤣🤣🤣 Giggles helplessly.

I'm hoping they have information about seismic activity or that there's water there, because that would be cool.

The dragon thing really drove me nuts, to be honest. Not one of DW's finer moments in storytelling. Also, everyone knows that dragons rule the earth in secret.

message 284: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Gotta say, that was probably my least liked episode of the new series. I mean, seriously?

message 285: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments I enjoy kill the moon, as an episode, and to occasionally torment people ( my daughter included) who hate it.

Now, 'Love and monsters', that's a different story...

Now see, I love Love and Monsters (and the use of the song Mr. Blue Sky, me being a big ELO fan) so “‘To each their own’ the old lady said as she kissed the cow.” as my friend’s mother used to say.

message 287: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Love and Monsters is half a good episode.
Love ELO.

Unfortunately, there's the second half.

Love and Monsters - has so many issues that I don't like to think about at all. It was fine up until the end and I really didn't need to know about how the two characters dealt with certain relationship issues. 🤢

message 290: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments What starts as an interesting story is pretty much completely undermined by the ending.

Not just Russell thinking he is oh, so clever, but it then makes Tennant's Doctor look stupid, as he thought this was a really good idea...?

🎶 Sun is shinin' in the sky
There ain't a cloud in sight
It's stopped rainin' everybody's in the play
And don't you know
It's a beautiful new day, hey hey
Runnin' down the avenue
See how the sun shines brightly in the city
On the streets where once was pity
Mr. Blue Sky is living here today, hey hey
Mr. Blue Sky please tell us why
You had to hide away for so long (so long)
Where did we go wrong?
Mr. Blue Sky please tell us why
You had to hide away for so long (so long)
Where did we go wrong?
Hey you with the pretty face
Welcome to the human race
A celebration, Mr. Blue Sky's up there waitin'
And today is the day we've waited for
Oh Mr. Blue Sky please tell us why
You had to hide away for so long (so long)
Where did we go wrong?
Hey there Mr. Blue
We're so pleased to be with you
Look around see what you do
Everybody smiles at you
Hey there Mr. Blue
We're so pleased to be with you
Look around see what you do
Everybody smiles at you
Mr. Blue, you did it right
But soon comes Mr. Night creepin' over
Now his hand is on your shoulder
Never mind I'll remember you this
I'll remember you this way
Mr. Blue Sky please tell us why
You had to hide away for so long (so long)
Where did we go wrong?
Hey there Mr. Blue (sky)
We're so pleased to be with you (sky)
Look around see what you do (blue)
Everybody smiles at you 🎶

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments This episode and Guardians of the Galaxy got my daughter interested in 'old, Dad music'.

So, that part was nice.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Finished Hand of Fear.
Random thoughts:

Forgot how much Like the secondary control room. Nice design.

Sarah Jane being possessed for half the story means the Doctor has to interact with normal people. Fun to see.

Liked the design on Eldrad. Though it feels like they spent more money on the girl, then the guy.

The ending: Just so sweet. One of the best companion leaving scenes ever.
Though, I'm pretty sure that's one of Jo Grant's jackets she's wearing when she leaves.

At least he’s alive. Better alive without pants than dead with pants. I’d bet Adric would have happily traded in those PJ pants for a quick TARDIS pickup. Just saying ...

Long, long ago, in a galaxy that's right here, in a time BC (before children), and even BS (before spouses), my brother and I saw ELO in concert--the stage was supposed to look like they were standing in a spaceship, but actually it looked like a giant burger bun, open, and the band was the burger! Or maybe we were just chemically-altered enough to see it that way?

When I was still a newlywed, so we hadn't been married long--not even 30 yet--my husband's youngest sister asked him if she could borrow some of his Jefferson Airplane albums, along with Renaissance, and White Bird. He was flattered, thinking she was discovering his music. No, she told him, she'd get extra credit in her high school history class for bringing in some of that old stuff on LPs. He was so horrified! "Honey--our music is history?"

Then we were out to breakfast once in our very conservative town, sitting in a packed diner with our 4 small children, and what comes on over the radio? Not elevator muzak (remember that?)--no, the original version of Grace Slick singing ," One pill makes you smaller, and another makes you tall, and the ones that Mother gives you, don't do anything at all..." OMG!

Finally our kids grew into teenagers. Most sniffed at our music, but the 3rd boy really got into Jethro Tull for a while--then he got his brother into Black Sabbath, and they went together to see Ozzie and the gang on their farewell tour. We've gone with them to see Nine Inch Nails and Tool--husband goes with those two sons every time Rammstein comes to town. The family that grooves to the same music, old stuff AND new stuff, stays in touch with each other.

Oh, and of course, all 4 of our kids have seen every iteration of every doctor, since we own most of them. Two sons met Peter Davisson at a comic-con and one told him breathlessly, "I've been watching you my whole life!" We can't even stump them on questions like, "What tribe is Leela from?" They've got all of the stories memorized.

message 299: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments As a little kid, while singing along to the radio in the car, I used to change the pronouns from female to male to Beatles songs or really anything I knew well. So no buddy really noticed or at said least never said anything about it.

I love Nine Inch Nails, I’ve seen Trent Reznor in concert twice. The second time NIN was touring with David Bowie. They did 5 songs on stage together. Those 5 songs alone where worth the price of the ticket, but they also each did a full set of songs as well. Brilliant. Just brilliant.

I've seen NIN twice also--once with 2 sons and my husband, when they toured with Soundgarden--so glad I got to see Chris Cornell before his untimely demise.

Then a couple of years ago, Trent came to Chicago for a very intimate performance at the Aragon, which is an old-style music palace, with no seats--so basically, a huge mosh pit. I was so close to the stage I could have touched him! I went with the son I turned on to NIN when he was in grade school! He had trouble getting the day off work, since he was less than a year at his job, but he told his boss that he wanted to go see NIN at the Aragon for his 27th birthday. The boss just looked at him. Then he added, "I'm going with my mom." The boss nodded and gave him the day off. We were in awe at how close we were! And my much taller son told me I wasn't the only person with gray hair in the crowd--just maybe the only woman not dying her hair.

But to have seen NIN do songs with David Bowie? I bow to you! Sounds like an excellent show!
