Yes, that is annoying. Writers have a bad habit of doing that sort of thing.

Everything about Shang-Chi is gorgeous and I love the relationship Shang and Katy have. And going to Karaoke with Wang at the end? Cherry on top. LOL

Rick | 2270 comments Shang-Chi is one of my favorite Marvel films. When it was in the theater, I actually rented a screening and had 30 come see it with me. The theater chain was running a special because of Covid and trying to get people back into the theater. I’d love to do that again for Fantastic Four First Steps but I doubt it would be affordable anymore.

I generally am a fan of 'end with a big fight scene', not to mention kiaju, but in Shang's case, it didn't feel needed.
The confrontation with his father and them both dealing with stuff was the point and was so well done.

That sounds cool.
Be fun to do that.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2416 comments So, there's a trailer for 'The war between the land and the sea'....

I don't love it.

message 2356: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2270 comments I am very intrigued.

message 2357: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2416 comments I'm not.
Between the Sea devil redesign, it feeling like UNIT is hardly in it and the 'Children of Earth' vibe, my enthusiasm for this project has dropped.

Really?
The era ended five minutes ago?
Are we already desperate to create Who content with the looming hiatus?

Wish me luck, while I now wait patiently for Nick Briggs to recognize my genius and offer to shower me with cash and fame.

Was it Council of Geeks? Or another channel? They tend to run fast and hard on those. :o\

I think it was the Council of Geeks
Feels like there were a couple, but that was the one that finally cracked me.

Council of Geeks - I really wanted to like their channel, but they're so opinated in a kinda negative way to the point I gave up on watching them.

I go back and forth with them.
Don't agree with everything and it feels like they are losing steam/ enthusiasm for having the channel, but I enjoy some of their stuff and they were really nice when I met them at a con a couple years back.

Do they shout a lot? I bet they shout a lot. A friend of mine’s wife refers to pop culture podcasters who shout a lot as “loud nerds.” She can’t stand them. It’s like they think shouting adds weight to their opinion or makes their point more valid.

Not generally a shouter.
Occasionally they get worked up, but they're not the typical angry YouTuber

Travis (travishiltz) | 2416 comments The Savages: Can see why it's not better known, but it has a low key, cheesy sci-fi charm.
The three leads all do a nice job.
Steven's leaving scene is very well done.

Nothing earth shaking, but it was fun, nice to check another story off my list and the extras are really in-depth and interesting.

CoG is more about the snide than the yelling. Your friend's wife isn't far wrong on a lot of those folks, which is why I don't watch them.

message 2370: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2416 comments Cool moment from the Savages extra: they tracked down one of the surviving actors, he played 'guard #2' for an interview.
Turns out his wife is also an actor and she played elderly Ruby in '73 Yards'.

So, they both acted in Doctor Who, 60 years apart from each other.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2416 comments Island of terror: something has gone very wrong at a lab on a small, secluded island off the coast of Ireland and two doctors have come to investigate.

Cheesy, creepy monster movie and Peter Cushing is one of the good guys...I'm happy.
Fun base under siege feeling film with a likable cast and a creepy vivbe, so you won't question the science or some of the poor choices made by our heroes.

Squint slightly and you can almost convince yourself this is what a Cushing Doctor Who movie, made during the Pertwee era might have been like.

message 2373: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2416 comments Superman: I am unspeakably happy right now.
I don't 100% agree with some story choices, but Gunn got the man of steel right and that's all that matters.

Such a good movie.

Elizabeth | 35 comments Still here. Contemplating starting a Great Rewatch from the very beginning with Hartnell plus the spin-offs. Think I have the time considering this looks to be a long hiatus…

Mostly I’ve been listening to Big Finish when I get a chance. Really liked the 13 and Yaz’s debut.

message 2377: by Tali (new)

Tali | 32 comments Vampire weekend was a lot of fun! Currently struggling with Big Finish in general because of my current headaches and sound effects especially anything with Daleks is headache city which frustrates me as I was just getting started with Once and Future when this round hit and can’t get through episode four but was able to enjoy vampire weekend! Also listening to Doctor Who short story collections and trying to get in some audiobooks of some old school novelizations. But currently mostly taking a headache break with short cozy mysteries narrated by Nathaniel Parker as I find his voice soothing and he does a lot of them.

Started a great rewatch a couple years ago.
I'm now halfway through #6's era.

Will probably do new Who when I reach that point, but doubt I'll do the spin offs.
K-9 and company maybe.
But, I'd be too sad rewatching Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood ain't worth it.

message 2380: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2270 comments My latest rewatch is currently on the last year of the Third Doctor. I had to move rather unexpectedly in November last year, and my Doctor Who discs are all still in the storage unit (I had a ten day lapse between having to be out of the old place and before I could get into the new place, it's messed up every aspect of my life).

And I have lots of new stuff from Big Finish to entertain me while we await new stuff for the TV.

Rick | 2270 comments Tali wrote: "I meant episode three I think whichever is the one with seven and DAVROS."

I know what you mean. The Daleks can be quite headache inducing, particularly on audio. I almost feel like they ramp up the volume just for when Daleks are speaking. And it aggravates any headache I might have at the time.

Sorry to hear about the move.
That does not sound fun.

I will say, my rewatch gave me a new appreciation for Pertwee.
I always thought he was okay, but watching his era in order gave him a boost in my rankings.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2416 comments I'm glad BF is giving Jo Martin her own series, but at the same time, it means we are never going to get any answers, as BF follows what the TV show has done and nobody involved with the show seem interested in ever dealing with/ fixing all those loose threads.

message 2384: by Lori S. (new)

Lori S. (fuzzipueo) | 770 comments Mod
Loose threads are part and parcel to Doctor Who.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2416 comments Lori S. wrote: "Loose threads are part and parcel to Doctor Who."

yeah, but this one limits the character and constantly hangs over her.
I like the character and the actress, I want to see more of her, but I worry she's gonna get stuck a vague footnote.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2416 comments Watching old episodes of Scrapheap challenge and my wife and I are convinced Robert Lewyllen's choice of outfit is part of his audition for Doctor Who.

Even includes googles and a cool overcoat.

message 2388: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2416 comments Watched a really nice video on youtube of various Doctor Who actors talking about Patrick Troughton.

I like how many seem to appreciate him as both the one that made it possible for them to get the job, as he kept the show going, as well as what a good actor he was.

message 2389: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2416 comments The great rewatch continues!

Mysterious Planet: halfway through.
While this season has a shaky reputation, you can see the BBC is still giving them a solid budget.
It's a bright, shiny good looking show.
Dialogue is sharp, Peri has calmed down and Colin seems to be having fun.

The trial is a good idea, and maybe I'm influenced by knowing it goes off the rails at the end, but it's my least favorite part.
Good actors, but it feels suspenseful and important without actually telling us anything.

message 2390: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2416 comments Looks like BF is experimenting with a couple novelizations of some of their early stories.

That's cool, but if they try to go full Target, I may be in a lot of trouble.
I can resist the CDs, but Dr. Who books are a weakness of mine...

message 2391: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2416 comments Anyone else heard these rumors of several unearthed film collections that are supposed to contain some lost Dr. Who episodes...?

message 2392: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2270 comments I’ve been hearing rumors. Nothing specific. But then these rumors do seem to crop up every 10 years. Give or take. Rumors are nothing but will-o-wisps, once I see an update saying something specific, I’ll believe it and get excited.
The worst all the people who post “new lost episodes found!” announcements and then do nothing but give a list of “I hope they found this episode.”
Yeah. I get it. We all want the lost episodes found.

Rick | 2270 comments Travis wrote: "… but if they try to go full Target, I may be in a lot of trouble. I can resist the CDs, but Dr. Who books are a weakness of mine..."

I’m the exact opposite. The books I can resist, but give me an audio with the actual actors and I’m all in.

Yeah, if they don't know specifics, don't just print your wish list.
There's definitely one collection being praised, possibly two.
So, I'm optimistic.

Rumor has it they've also discovered some of the lost Avengers episodes, so it's got my interest.

message 2395: by Rick (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2416 comments Rick wrote: "I’ve heard about the lost Avengers episodes as well."

Be cool, as I've seen episodes from every season but the first, Dr. Keel ones.

message 2397: by Tali (new)

Tali | 32 comments I never saw the show of The Avengers I got into the Big Finish series through the comic adaptations because I loved the movie with Uma Thurman when I was a kid and ended up really enjoying the Big Finish comic adaptations series. One of my parents must have watched the show because otherwise I don’t know how I wound up seeing the movie and then as kids do watched it multiple times.

message 2398: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2416 comments I vaguely knew of them, as my dad liked spy stuff.
Later, as a young dad with a kid who did not sleep well, I rediscovered them, as one of our cable channels played episodes several times a day.
So, I watched most of the Mrs. Peel/Tara King episodes with a small drooling child on my shoulder.

Later, I made an effort to track down the rest.

Some friends of mine on another site, who tend toward the sceptical when it comes to missing episodes being found, are cautiously optimistic about this news. We'll see!
