It's one of those shows I'd always heard mentioned, but never saw.
Finally getting around to it.
I get why it's seen as a big deal, but not sure if I love it.

Ivan | 31 comments I love it. It's a great show, and part of what makes it work so well for me is its dark tone. Yes, it's a slow burn, but the stories go in some unexpected directions and the finale is jaw-dropping. I promise it's worth the trip.

Now that we have our 7 and are finding a rythym, I'm starting to enjoy its more.
Good cast and I'm enjoying the weird sci-fi stuff more than the 'oh no! the Federation!' stuff.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Just discovered Jonathon Groff who played Rogue also played King George in Hamilton...!

The same actor who played one of my least favorite Who characters played my favorite Hamilton character...?

Life is strange.

Think I'll watch some scooby-doo instead.

Rick | 2260 comments Do that. The moderators are letting Donny the whiney baby lie, misinform, and propagandize until he’s red in the face.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Doolittle: better than I expected, but man it's a bit of a mess.
Too many modern references/slang/jokes.
Lot of famous actors wasted and way too busy and reliant on CGI.

I will say RDjr is actually excellent and when it relaxes and just focuses on telling an adventure story, it's alot of fun.

message 2160: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Seriously? RDjr spends most the film half-heartedly mumbling his lines. It’s like he tried to do it while sleep walking.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Rick wrote: "Seriously? RDjr spends most the film half-heartedly mumbling his lines. It’s like he tried to do it while sleep walking."

I didn't like the 'oh, he's sad...!' bits, but once the story kicks in, I enjoyed the odd Doctor Who meets Jack Sparrow vibe.

He's a better Doolittle than he was Sherlock Holmes , in my humble opinion

message 2162: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments I thought he was terrible as both. Although I never saw the second Sherlock Holmes film he made. The first one was too awful.

message 2163: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Hated his Sherlock Holmes.

And Doolittle is decent, where it could have been great, but RDJ is not the problem.

somebody looked at this script and decided we need it to be funny, to off set it being odd and quirky and gave it to a couple sitcom writers.

On the bright side, this movie reminded me how much I loved these books as a kid, so I'm off to amazon to track them down.

message 2164: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments RDjr may not have been “the” problem, but he was one of the problems. You’re correct about the writing, but I can’t help feel like he got so disgusted with the direction the script was taken that he just “phoned it in” as they say. Because he just felt completely removed from and disinterested in everything else happening in the movie.

message 2165: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Mulan: the live action is very different from the animated, but once you realize that and make the mental adjustment, it's quite good.
I really enjoyed it.
Great cast.

Not that there's a ton of competition, but one of the best of the live action remakes.

That sucks.
Sorry to hear.
Hope you're doing better.

message 2170: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Much better. I was only really sick (this time) for about 3 days, but it took almost a week to get a negative test result. The really bad part was that when I got sick, I tested negative, so I thought it was just a cold. The next day it was a lot worst, but still negative. So I went home early. The next day I was feeling a little better, but then I actually got a fever AND then I tested positive. So the virus is being real tricky now, trying to avoid detection so it can spread.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Raya and the last dragon: Good, but could have been great.

The 'woke' isn't what's hurting movies, it's the fact that writers will waste screen time with fart jokes, unfunny comedic sidekicks (this movie gives the heroine 7 of them. Only 3 are actually funny) and quirky, modern dialogue in a fantasy setting.

Plus, the evil girl's redemption involved no actual acknowledgment of the damage she caused....!
It's like Stephen Moffett helped write it.

Shame, as it's a beautiful looking movie with lots of good stuff buried under the crap.

message 2173: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Yeah I enjoyed it, but it wasn’t GREAT.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Blake's 7 update: Finished the first season.
Really solid cast, and it's working really hard to overcome its budget limitations.
Writing is decent, like the sci-fi ideas, but I'm losing interest in the big bad federation as the main plot line, as it's pretty blah.

Maybe, I'm biased, as one of the main bad guys is a psychotic cyborg named 'Travis'.

Enjoying it and curious how they deal with the season finale in season 2.

Tali | 31 comments Listened on audio to Bonnie Langford’s Doctor Who book that just came out, Death in the Stars. No surprise she does a great job narrating! Enjoyed it, but it gets pretty dark. No darker than some Big Finish so not off tone for Doctor Who, I’m just usually a cozy mystery person when it comes to mystery stories and it’s definitely not that. But there is a lot of humor in it too to keep it from being too grim. Do recommend especially on audio!

With how big a deal Mel has been in New Who, you'd think Nick Briggs would be camped out on her doorstep.

Would love to see/hear/read some adventures of her in space, trying and probably failing to keep Glitz out of trouble.
Cheerful, perky Mel meets the Judoon would be brilliant.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Target has announced novelizations of nearly all of Ncuti's first season are available for preorder.

I'll have to buy the '73 yards' one.
See if that helps.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Rick wrote: "Just finished the first two episode of Agatha All Along. LOVED IT!"

It's a solid start.
I have a few quibbles and concerns, but it's a pretty decent cast, an impressive amount of easter eggs and naked Catherine Hahn, so I'm willing to go along for the ride and see what happens.

message 2180: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Blake's 7 season 2: It's a mess, but an entertaining mess.
Like the cast, but the writers don't know what to do with half of them or remember that we have a telepath and two super computers that might be able to help us.

Lots of good ideas and it's fun to play 'spot the Doctor Who actor', but I only like the show, not love it.

message 2181: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Agatha all along: I can't tell if this show is trying too hard or it doesn't know what it's doing...?
Solid cast, wasted bad guys, whiplash tone, and could that reveal in episode four been fumbled any worse...?

Love Katherine Hahn and Patty Lapone, and there are some good ideas here, but the presentation is a mess and I'm not sure if they had a plan past 'Agatha is crazy popular! Give her a show!"

message 2182: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Oh they had a plan. And after the fifth episode it’s only just starting to get revealed. 😼

message 2183: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Hound of the Baskervilles: Tom Baker is a solid Sherlock Holmes, though it's odd to see him with his hair all slicked down.

Production is decent but very stagey. Must have been done for TV rather than a movie, like I thought

message 2184: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Forgot to mention: Caroline Johns is the cast!
There's a scene featuring Liz Shaw and the 4th Doctor.

Shame Tom didn't do more of these.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Rick wrote: "Oh they had a plan. And after the fifth episode it’s only just starting to get revealed. 😼"

I don't hate the show, but I don't love it.
Great cast struggling to keep some really uneven writing going.

If they pull off the finale, I'll be more forgiving.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments If nothing else, 'Agatha all along' did right by Patti LaPone.

Her spotlight episode is probably the best thing this show has done.

message 2187: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Halloween viewing: Day of the Triffids: good, not great, but Carol Ann Ford shows up and I swear Nick Courtney is one of the aircraft pilots.

Plus, the Triffids look like a Doctor Who monster.

Well, I’d disagree with some this, but the sentiment on her episode? Yes, she was brilliant.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Happy halloween!!

Not a lot of kids this year.
Maybe 15.
My daughter is gonna be thrilled at the amount of candy she's getting when she stops by this weekend.
Watched a couple old B+W monster movies and finished Agatha All Along.

message 2190: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Agatha thoughts: the two penultimate episodes were the best of the bunch and probably where the show should have ended.
The actual finale felt like an after thought, that didn't do much besides muddy the waters further.

Really solid cast helps bolster the writing, which seesaws between really clever and no idea what it's doing.

Weird that the two new characters it establishes: Wiccan and Jennifer Kale: the first is nicely comic book accurate, while the second couldn't be more off model if they'd tried...

message 2191: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments I absolutely LOVED Agatha All Along. Definitely one of the best shows Marvel has done. And I strongly disagree with the notion that the final episode is an afterthought. Yes, the penultimate episode had a BIG climax, but the background and reveal in the final episode (even if you saw it coming) changes the entire series. This is on the level of The Sixth Sense twist. Such good stuff.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Rick wrote: "I absolutely LOVED Agatha All Along. Definitely one of the best shows Marvel has done. And I strongly disagree with the notion that the final episode is an afterthought. Yes, the penultimate episod..."

Liked it, didn't love it.
And while I agree, the final episode changes the entire series, I don't agree that that was nessicarily a good thing.

Really interested to see more with Billy, but don't love him stuck with Agatha, as a bitchy Obi-wan force ghost.

Despite her not being my favorite character, I'm equally interested in where Jen Kale shows up next.

Lots of good pieces to this show, but they never quite came together for me.

nobody is having fun right now, and all we can do is worry about things and try to watch out for each other.

I'm glad for my little corners of the internet where I can just go and talk about the fun stuff.
Think we need those more than ever.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Interesting theory:
is the watcher from Logopolis an example of bi-regeneration?

message 2197: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Thought for the day: Will the 2nd Tenant Doctor just remerge with the main Doctor when his time is done or will he regenerate too?

And if he can regenerate maybe that's how we get the Curator, the Valyard and the Shalka Doctor...?

message 2198: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments amazon has all the Avengers seasons available.
Just what I needed.
Witty, fun, breezy with the occasional murder.

Think I'll start with the Tara King seasons.

Hi Rick. Sorry I've been away too long. Hope you are doing all right and please know, I am not a happy camper either.

Would people like a separate thread for a place to vent and let out some anxieties? Let me know.
