Did you see the Flash Gordon TV show from about 15-20 years back? Absolutely terrible. It had some good points, but they were far too few and too far between. All but unwatchable. I would love to see either Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers revived, but they need to be done respect. Campy would be fine, but they still to have respect for the concept and characters.

I loved it as a kid, but I've been nervous to rewatch it, as I wonder if it'll hold up.

I rewatched it when it came out on disc some years (decades) back. I didn’t think it held up well at all, but I haven’t tried again since then.

Very true.
When bringing back older characters you need a budget and writers that love and/or respect the concept, otherwise it'll crash and burn.

See 99% of the modern takes of older shows/movies out there for examples.

Tali | 31 comments Listening to Bug Finish’s You are the Doctor and other Stories and running into the limitations of the app, not really built for a choose your own adventure story can’t skip to specific tracks. Unless I am missing something? If anyone knows how to do this let me know.

message 1956: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Is this the one you’re asking about: Doctor Who: You Are the Doctor and Other Stories?

I just looked up at their website, it doesn’t say anything about being a “choose your own adventure” there. I’ve not listened to that one, but I’m wondering if its part of the presentation that it’s a “choose your own adventure” but it’s not actually intended to be that. They do play with formats and presentation quite a bit. But I could be wrong as I haven’t listened to that one.

Rick | 2260 comments Write up reads: “You Are the Doctor by John Dorney YOU are the Doctor, a mysterious traveller in time and space. Will YOU succeed in foiling the ghastly plans of the horrible Porcians, the most inept invaders in all the cosmos? Or will you get yourself killed, over and over again?”

But there’s nothing about actually needed any specific type of platform to listen to it. I think you’re just suppose to let it play and enjoy the chaos of the narrative’s structure. But I could be totally wrong.

message 1958: by Tali (new)

Tali | 31 comments I just listened to the start and it does say to skip to specific tracks but I am probably just going to do what you said and listen all the way through since the tracks thing isn’t an app option.

message 1959: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Sorry to hear that you’re having trouble with it. I’ve been almost universally pleased with Big Finish releases and quality.

message 1960: by Tali (new)

Tali | 31 comments I’m in general really happy with them, this is the first time I’ve had any problems, and to me it’s not a major one I am sure I’ll still enjoy it.

Yeah, the app only lets you move forward or back in 30 second increments. I’m sure they wouldn’t produce something that wouldn’t work on their app as they really push for people to download and use their app.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Night of the demon: A B+W British horror film.
Wonderfully atmospheric and creepy and makes use of the effects of the time.

No noticeable Who actors, but somebody on the production staff must have watched it before working on a certain Pertwee story.

Rick | 2260 comments Seen that one years and years ago.

Rick | 2260 comments With all the news of the new series from Big Finish, Dark Gallifrey (https://www.bigfinish.com/news/v/dark...), I missed the other huge Big Finish news yesterday. A new Podcast release of classic Doctor Who audio-dramas.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Am I the only one that finds 'content creator' to be an annoying BS phrase?
Tell me what kind of content you are creating. It's easy. We have words for every kind.

message 1969: by Tali (new)

Tali | 31 comments Which of the Doctors has your favorite voice? Mine is Paul McGann. Pleasure to listen to on audio. Second would be Sylvester McCoy as I just love his entire way of speaking and that accent!

message 1970: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments I’m very partial to both William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton from the classic series, they’re my favorites from that era. I’m usually going to go with David Tennant as my over all favorite, with series four being the absolute best season ever. The DoctorDonna forever! But I also love Peter Capaldi from the new series, I just wish Capaldi had better stories from his era and a better companion, I got really exhausted with Clara during her tenure on the series. But I’d have to agree that Paul McGann might be my favorite if we’re just talking about the voice. He’s why I got into Big Finish as I hated that he only had the TV movie, so his audio-dramas were what got me sucked in initially.

message 1971: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Classic: Tom Baker
New Who: Capaldi

Both men I would pay money to hear them read the phonebook.

Do like the when Sylvester McCoy starts really rolling his 'R's, so honorable mention.

message 1972: by Ivan (new)

Ivan | 31 comments My favorite Doctors to listen to are also my favorite Doctors overall: Patrick Troughton and Tom Baker. Although when it comes to audio adventures I like listening to all of them, so if it's Doctor Who I'll listen to it.

Got to agree with that. 😸

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Watching some review videos, I'm reminded:
New Who seems bad at one off monsters.
For every Ood or weeping angel, that go on to be big, there's a dozen...what were the names of those dogs in Eaters of Light?

Discuss.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Space:1999 rewatch update:
Brian the Brain: Bernard Cribbins!!!

Not a great episode, but so insane that it's entertaining.

message 1976: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Brian the Brain is definitely one of the more “insane” Year Two episodes. 😹

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Rick wrote: "Brian the Brain is definitely one of the more “insane” Year Two episodes. 😹"

The episode should not work, but it does.
maybe it's all the Bernard Cribbins.

message 1978: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments I wouldn’t give him all the credit, but he does deserve some of it. Landau & Bain really worked at making that script functional. They tried, they really did. 😹

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Update on the great Kroft rewatch:

Lidsville: still one of my favorites. Has a weird 'Alice and wonderland' vibe and CNR is a dynamo.
Would love to see this one brought back.

Electra woman and Dyna girl: Fun with a great rogues gallery and hints at a bigger back story.

Bugaloos: get what they're trying to do, but it doesn't work for me.
The kids are likable, but Martha Raye looks lost.

Lost Saucer: great, goofy 'Lost in space' vibe, likable cast, love the Dorse and hints of a bigger universe.

Lot of people are recommending it.
i'll probably check it out on streaming.

message 1983: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments My new favorite fan theory:

Jo Martin's Ruth Doctor is not pre-Hartnell, but rather happened in the weird timey-whiney mess between Doctors 6 and 7 and is a sort of 'War Doctor' forced regeneration in order for the Time Lords to fix the mess they made during trial.

Which is why Colin's regeneration is so weird, as it's a forced reset, trying to put things back on track and hide 6.5.

Love the idea that it keeps the Ruth Doctor, fixes some of 6's era and allows me to head canon away the timeless child.

Rick | 2260 comments Nice theory … err … fan theory … but, uhm … in Wild Blue Yonder the Donna-no-thing knows that The Doctor isn’t really from Gallifrey.

But you keep your theory, if it makes you feel better.

Yeah, I'm going to trust the word of something that doesn't know how arms work..
😉

Since it's probably one of those things that's never going to be fully resolved, I'll happily take a fan theory that helps me ignore some stuff that doesn't work and/or I don't like.

Now I have the free time to work on an explaintion for why the Valyard never showed up.

Or did he? The Time War caused lots of stuff to be erased and forgotten or never happened retroactively.

Again, it's on the list with all the other stuff the fans have to figure out, as the show probably never will.

Rick | 2260 comments Michael Jayston appeared as the Valeyard in the Big Finish releases:
Doctor Who: Trial of the Valeyard (Dec 2014)
Doctor Who: The Sixth Doctor - The Last Adventure (Aug 2015)
Doctor Who: The Eighth Doctor - Time War, Volume 3 (Aug 2019)

message 1996: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments I was impressed that RTD acknowledged the timeless child stuff, as especially the specials, are damage control, trying to win back/calm down the parts of fandom that lost their minds over the Chibnall era.
So, of course, he's going to bring Moffatt back.
