There's generally a lot of crying and banging my head against my laptop involved.
I find if I have a couple writing projects that I'm working on it helps.
I can then switch between them, in the hopes that one will give me that spark of inspiration/enthusiasm that gets me through it or at worst, if I'm bouncing between two or three stories, even if all I can manage is to crank out a sentence or two, I'm making progress and not just stewing in self-pity.

Basically, make yourself write. Something, anything.
Add a sentence to a story you are working on, update your blog or even just scribble down some notes about an idea that you might do in the future.

The best part is you have access to the greatest set of toys in the world.
You take all these ideas and characters and you can do whatever you want.

As a kid, I loved playing with action figures.
As a writer, it means I never have to stop. Just the action figures are in my head.
Most people watch a movie or read a book and can think 'that was cool. what if...?" and then go on with their lives.
If you are a writer, you don't stop at 'what if' or 'it'd be cool if...".
You can take that little bit of imagination and just go nuts with it.

Writing is work and getting published and (hopefully) paid is stressful, but that initial 'what if...?" and those first couple steps after it are fun for me every time.(less)

Travis Bummer.
I like how they got attention for the series with the podcast, but would prefer a book.
Guess, I'll have to track down the podcast once I finish reading the book.

message 37: by Noran

Noran Miss Pumkin No book-just podcasts. I sped through the book during the night--but fell asleep before the ending. They leave much for a series to follow.

message 36: by Travis

Travis Happy New Year back at you.

message 35: by Ronyell

Ronyell Hey!!! Happy Late New Year!!! LOL!!!

message 34: by Travis

Travis I do read alot. but I've also been reading for a ga-zillion years, so I've accumulated a lot of books to add to my list.
So, I tend to add reviews in big chunks. I'll click on an author a mark everything of his that I've read.

I review a lot of collections of comics, which I've also been reading since Jesus was a toddler and in the last decade they've collecting a lot of comic series into book editions, so there's a ton more to add.

All the money I save by not smoking, drinking and not caring what kind of car I drive goes into buying books and comics.

and occasional presents for my wife, so she doesn't kill me for filling the house with books and comics.

message 33: by Liz

Liz how do you find time to read so much? Or are the books just really small?

message 32: by Travis

Travis No problem. I'm always glad to make new friends with people that read, as well as share my wisdom about books.

For some reason, with your nickname, I picture you wearing a cape and mask when you do reviews.

Danielle The Book Huntress Thanks for accepting my friendship request, Travis. I enjoy reading your reviews.

message 30: by Ronyell

Ronyell Hey!!! Have you read "The Fool and the Flying Ship" by Eric Metaxas yet?

message 29: by Travis

Travis Curses, you're on to us! We are all aliens. Now, I'm gonna have to uase the mind probe on you.
This may sting a little and you'll loose the ability to remember TV show theme songs....

Or it could be we are all just too lazy or technically challenged to post a picture. You trying to tell me the picture you use on good reads is the same one as on your driver's license?

message 28: by Travis

Travis Have not seen the mini yet, but it just became available on netflix. Heard good things about it and managed to avoid any spoilers.
I've heard that they have announced Torchwood season 4, but so far no cast members have been signed. Not a good feeling.
Wait and see.

message 27: by Noran

Noran Miss Pumkin I am your only friend that has a picture--not even you! are you all aliens?

message 26: by Noran

Noran Miss Pumkin by accident i saw the last episode of torchwood mini series--it ripped me apart inside like nothg ever has before! They broke all the rules and went for broke and i mean broke! I sobbed near the end and so now am 180 about not trusting your gov't and now supporting the NRA. I never thought a quasi sci fi series would shake me to me inner core--but it was the modern version of the Brown coats 1938--only they were herding children this time. My hubby been for this since i met him, and i never have been--now--i still shaky from watching just that one episode--crap if i seen the whole series! They leave you thinking there is no torchwood left--surpisrng how popular it is!

Saw the new Dr Who extended episode--she would have been the best of best companions ever!!!! backpack! backpack! The lady was grand! The Doctor stupid!
They could do a spin-off on her alone!!!

message 25: by Travis

Travis I'm not a big fan of top ten lists to begin with, as all they ever do is start arguments.
But, come on 'Best books ever' for a title? Bit like walking into a redneck bar wearing a 'Nascar sucks!' t-shirt.

message 24: by Travis

Travis Not sure how I feel about this.
Redesign looks too 'Snoopy', though it is cool he can fly. Seems like they are aiming for younger audience, but the production values are all Mighty Morphin Power Rangers level.
Still think it'd be better if they'd just let him do more on 'Sarah Jane'.

You need to smell nice! I like the line for the Red myself! :)

message 21: by Travis

Travis much as I'm not a huge fan of these kind of lists, it gives me hope for humanity that every one of Ann Coulter's books made the list and most were in the top fifty.

message 20: by Travis

Travis That's for the trailer. That looks brilliant.

message 19: by Travis

Travis Fear not! As far as I know, he is only showing up for the special and part of the plot is wether or not he really is a future regeneration of the Doctor or some kind of cosmic fanboy imposter.

rumor says Patterson Joseph ( the black guy) is still the front runner. Not sure if he qualifies as a cute Doctor though. They are supposed to make the officeal announcement during the Christmas special!

somewhat christmas /Doctor Who related: my wife wanted me to move a couple Doctor Who action figures I have displayed by my desk, to make room for christmas decorations. So, as a compromise, I put down cotton and a tiny tree, so now it looks like Cristopher Eccelston and K-9 have just landed somewhere snowy and festive. Been telling my kids I now need a bad guy alien to make the scene complete. I'm hoping Santa brings me a Dalek or a Judoon.

Doctor and Donna k-i-s-s-i-n-g! lol as I said it is not romantic!

message 13: by Travis

Travis The more trailers I see, the less interest I have in this movie.
Why does the bridge look like the one from Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy?
Why does Uhura look like Beyonce?
Way too much CGI and a couple of wince inducing bits of dialogue.

It may turn out to be great, but I'm having flashbacks to 'Enterprise' in that it'll be a prequel that only makes the barest effort to look or feel like the thing it comes before.

Those shots of the Enterprise under construction do look pretty cool though.

Travis No problem. Anytime I talk about this stuff with other people means one less rant my wife has to hear.

message 5: by Noran

Noran Miss Pumkin I am glad to have people to chat about this stuff with. Thank you for that very much!

message 4: by Noran

Noran Miss Pumkin Two of my goodreads buddies are going ape over the trailer, so I was wonder about your view on it. I think it is hard after awhile to do a costume that is not looking like Batman. I did not really focus on voices, because of the music--but I have only read it a couple times. I guess if i was really into it, i would have a feel for voices and such. One GD is so happy they got Mars right. I feel bad when they always have to strip down the girls for the fan boys. Thanks for your opinion.

Travis All right, I caved and checked out the trailer.
I'm still torn. Lots of obvious CGI, Rorsharch's voice was wrong and Nightowl still looks like Batman.

On the good side, the scene of the Owlship coming out of the water was freakin' cool. Dr. Manhatten looks good and I haven't decided yet how I feel about Spectre looking like a stripper.

Travis Haven't. I saw a bunch of stills and the ugly costumes worried me, so I haven't been looking too hard for other info.
Right now I'm saving my excitement for Hellboy 2 and Mummy3.

Hoping to see Dark Knight, but all the hype is making me crazy.
