Really solid movie. We had a great time.

Trae Stratton | 11 comments Hi all, not sure if it’s been mentioned before but I happened to grab a Doctor Who magazine in my local Barnes&Noble this week that came bundled with an “exclusive”Target Paperback edition of The Evil of the Daleks by Frazer Hines. The DWM is issue 609 from November 2024. Amongst the usual front matter it actually says “Published and presented with DWM Issue 609. Not to be sold separately.” -No idea what the print run is but a cool Target Edition to have in your library if you’re a collector.

I will have to go see if one of our local stores have that. Thanks for the head's up Trae!

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Just finished 'Doctor Who in Wonderland'.

What a good book!
Perfectly captures the feel of a 5th Doctor story, makes good use of Who history and it's all about 'Alice in Wonderland'.

Was a little skeptical about this 'Doctor meets various literary characters' series within the series, but if the rest are this good, I may need to track them all down.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Reading a novel set in the Smith era and really enjoying it until we get as huge reminder how shitty the Doctor and Amy (and the writers) treated Rory.
Probably one of my least favorite parts of the Smith years.

message 2259: by Rick (last edited Mar 15, 2025 06:43AM) (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Yeah, for me: (1) the way they treated Rory, (2) Matt’s Smith tedious antics just get more tedious as the years progress, and (3) Clara, all make it difficult for me to go back and rewatch the Smith Era.

Early Clara I could live with, post-explanation Clara, I hate, so she tends to go on my 'things wrong with the Capaldi era' list.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Cruella: Impressive to see the amount of effort put in: great acting, writing, amazing, creative costumes and music.

Shame it was for this movie, as it's a mess.
It wants to be it's own thing, but it also wants you to like it because of its connection to 101 Dalmatians

Except, this movie isn't a prequel to 101 Dalmatians.
If it was brave enough to be its own thing, I could forgive some of the stumbles, but it gets too cutesy and just annoys me.

Any scene with both Emmas in it is worth watching though.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments 'Hellboy the crocked man' got no attention or press, but man is it good.
Probably my favorite after the original.

Really captures the vibe of the comic.

message 2263: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Yes it does. The only lacking in it was having Ron Perlman as Hellboy. He was so perfect for the role.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Rick wrote: "Yes it does. The only lacking in it was having Ron Perlman as Hellboy. He was so perfect for the role."

I like the new guy, but Perlman is the definitive Hellboy.
Kind of like how I compare all Superman actors to Christopher Reeve.

message 2265: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Perlman was Hellboy.
Reeve was Superman.

Definitively in both cases.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Today's hot take:

The Dick Van Dyke show is the greatest sitcom in TV history.

I won't be taking questions.

message 2267: by Rick (last edited Mar 29, 2025 02:31PM) (new)

Rick | 2260 comments It probably is. And the only reason I say probably, is I know there are a lot of sitcoms I haven’t seen. Although, to be honest, I am also very partial to M*A*S*H.

I'm sure I have a top 10 list.
My wife got me a book about the DvD show for Christmas, so we started a big rewatch and every episode is just us going 'Man, this is a good show!'.

Yes, it's dated (it's 60 years old!) but the writing is clever and never mean spirited and Rob and Laura are second to only Gomez and Mortica Addams on my list of best TV married couples.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Dreamed Ncuti's next season, his new companion was a blonde guy name Simon and they were being chased by Ice Warriors.
now I'm bummed that it's not what's actually happening.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Watched a video where they talked about how Martha was the best companion and I gotta admit, they might have a point.

She was never turned into a magical girl, chose to leave after realizing it wasn't good for her or the Doctor if she stayed rather than being forced to go, went on to bail out Torchwood... not to mention her mom went on to be one of the best characters in Bridgerton.

I like most new Who companions, but it made me realize there needs to be more Matrtha love out there.

Long-time lurker, first time poster here (Hello!).

I have to agree, she’s severely underrated as a companion. Martha was so capable and smart, but she got a really bum deal. I’m glad she went out on her own terms. I hope they bring her back at some point or she does more Big Finish. Martha’s Theme has been my ringtone for years now. 🥰

I’ve always liked Martha. Donna is still my favorite, but Martha could very well be my second. Hmm, if we go all the way back, Jamie would probably be my second favorite companion, and Captain Jack, but yeah Martha is certainly going to be in the top five.

Be very cool to see a Martha BF series or have her as part of a UNIT story

Would love if BF started going full Target on their stories.
I'd have to get a second job, but still...

message 2284: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Clearly there’s a market for these novelizations. So maybe. I’m thinking they might do the hardbacks as these limited print runs and then do a follow up release in paperback edition with a larger print run next year. If they sell well, they might continue with more.

I'd say Martha is on my list of solid, mid-level companions.
Probably group her with Nysa, Liz Shaw and Vikki.

Lots of vague rantings about 'woke' and stated 'facts' about the show that tell me they all started watching with Tennant.

Love when they talk about the ratings.
As someone who started watch Doctor Who on PBS, it amuses me no end.

I can't really get mad at their rantings cause it's all a bit sad.

message 2295: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Apparently Doctor Who is one of the most watched shows on Disney+. So Disney is likely pretty happy with it. Percy Jackson is also doing really well for Disney.
