Bookworm (have loads of catching up to do) | 1001 comments Do let me know how you find Howard's End and Giovanni's Room, whenever you do read.

I have not yet read Maurice, I know it does feature homosexuality but I'm not sure if there's any romantic angle to it. If that helps. :)

Well I read some comments about it and it seems I can read it. Maurice is what the French call my country. See you.

Bookworm (have loads of catching up to do) | 1001 comments Completed The Yellow wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman.
It's a short story and a classic, at around 60 pgs or so. I very much liked it.

That's a very interesting tidbit about Maurice. Oscar Wilde was braver in publishing Dorian Gray when he did.

I've not read any of those books, but I have watched the movie 'A Passage to India'. Didn't enjoy it much for its depiction of Indians, and hence the book lost its appeal.

Dorian Gray is one ambitious and beautiful story. Oscar Wilde's risk paid off. Till date, I haven't heard anyone that they dislike it.

Yeah..understand. For similar reason, even I didn't feel like adding 'A Passage to India' to my tbr.

Very true. It was much beyond its time. Too bad it was Wilde's only full-length novel. He's one of my favourite writers and I love his short stories and his plays too. :)

Nathan (nathan-93) | 554 comments What I read over the last 2 weeks -

A Choir of Ill Children Dark/Horror
Not for the faint heart-ed

Luckiest Girl Alive
I hated this book. Wouldn't recommend to anyone. But if it[Cover/blurb] tickles your brain, go ahead.

Death is Now My Neighbour
I think pro-seasoned readers would enjoy this. I am not a pro-seasoned reader. I was not too thrilled with this.

Deadly Waters
This like a man hate/me-too anthem based novel I guess?

Journey to the Centre of the Earth
Age old classic. I enjoyed it.

The Inugami Curse
Yawn! Another Japanese murder mystery novel. I grow tired these days.

The Yellow Wall-Paper

Luffy Sempai (luffy79) Where I live, Christmas always happens during summer. It's like a Narnian curse.
I'm taking the goodwill floating in the air and the buildup to the festive season to read a couple of crowd pleasers.

Giovanni's Room, and Carrie Soto Is Back. So far, I don't get the appeal of either.

Rosh ~catching up slowly~ (roshreviews) The Visit by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
The Visit (Black Stars, #1) by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Lethal White (could be slightly shorter,3*) BR with Em,

Letters to a Young Poet (liked the letters and the insights which Rilke has on the world, loneliness and writing)

and 10 Minutes 38 Seconds in This Strange World (like the concept, book structure and enjoyed it overall).

Currently BRing with Em - #5 in Cormoran Strike series, Troubled Blood

Luffy Sempai (luffy79) I am currently reading Inferno: The World at War, 1939-1945. Having read The Second World War a handful of years back, I was familiar with the defining acts of that war. But so far I have been delighted with the mixture of research of facts and research of human elements.

I think that this war has started to be forgotten, else how do you explain Ukraine? I am fascinated with the contribution of the Russian army, and the role of Stalin in the midst of all things.

The Indians were conscripted - drafted by force - and some of them covered themselves in glory. Hastings, the author, still has a dig at Indian contribution by labelling some of the Indian infantry as mercenaries, which is another way of forgetting how they landed in that war.

Neither of my grandfathers (now both dead) took part in WW2. My maternal gramps was hid away by his dad when the army officials came calling. The world population would have included many more people if WW2 had not happened. But then the world would have had many more people had malaria not killed hundreds of millions of people up to recently.

Aaanyway, the writer of Inferno is too much enamoured with British exploits to properly write a compelling account of the War in all its ambiguities and its horror. Hastings tried to level the playing field by mentioning the cowardice of Chamberlain et al. But as soon as Hitler's fall began - this is, hardly a spoiler - Hastings could not help but erase the gaffes of the English.

I wonder in what hue will the author paint the English being on the ropes, needing the USA to prevent their future generations from speaking German. It is fascinating history so far. I prefer History to Philosophy. This is because I really have no clue what even Plato, or even Camus are saying in their books.

The Thin Blue-Yellow Line Between Love and Hate A war diary from Ukraine by Anton Eine
A war diary written by indie Ukrainian author Anton Eine, focusing on the first hundred days since Russia invaded the country in Feb 2022. A devastating read.

Luffy Sempai (luffy79) I have got numb from reading Inferno. It is a crappy book, but I feel I should not DNF it, as this was my go to strategy generally. I want to look at the book so intensely with disquiet, that I expect the book to look back at me.

I want to read Inferno to the bitter end. This is an impersonal book whose author at one point got lost in all the data collected for research. The human element is not present at all. Bah, I will read it all simply to give it the unflattering rating that it deserves. The Second World War by Anthony Beevor, was much better.

I liked it. Agreed, some things were better than the others but for me they turned out to be really good. Fig tree and past events won me over, found the present timeline to be lackluster.

I am on a roll, read quite a lot in last two weeks.

Memphis, a good story about the struggles of black women but I have read many books on the same theme so I didn't strike me as great.

Never Let Me Go, it was heartbreaking!! That's all I am going to say.

Olga Dies Dreaming, another book on discrimination but this time it was about Puerto Rico and how rich/affluent people of America are exploiting the land and people of Puerto Rico.

Girl Friends, more people need to read this author. She's absolutely fantastic. Loved the book.

Island of Missing Trees, using Cyprean civil war of 1974 as the background, was poignant and beautiful.

Currently reading The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, the book turned the tide for the author. The other two books that I have read by TJR, I found them to be mediocre. Happy that this is a page turner so far.

Bookworm (have loads of catching up to do) | 1001 comments @Em, wow! Can you sprinkle some of your energy here. :D

I really want to pick up Never Let me Go, maybe it'll have to be 2023.

Girl Friends, seems like something that I would like.
