Done reading and i think one must read it to draw their own conclusions. But this will not sit well with Hindus, specially who have read or know what goes on in Ramayana.

Recently read Cormoran Strike #1 & #2 with friends, and these books are fun. Would recommend but I think I am late to the party, most people I know here have already read this.
Also read Convenience Store Woman and Professor and the Housekeeper. Loved the former, and found the latter slow for my liking.
Now reading Shorefall and Butter Honey Pig Bread.

On that note, are female characters usually less or mere out of convenience side-characters in Japanese fiction? Or is it just me?
Guys, please do recommend manga series (preferably completed ones) which would have flushed out female characters.

You're welcome!
Watch the anime too! It is fantastic.
I haven't read many manga but loved the anime.
I think it depends on what are you reading. The books that i mentioned both had female as the protagonist. Other than that Murakami books that I have read even if they are secondary characters, they did have an important role to play.

True, the books you mentioned, do have female protagonist.
I was asking about the manga, because when I surfed the net for recs, I found that many popular manga have less female characters or if they do, they're usually not well developed and most likely used as props.
Coming to the Murakami books that I have read, agreed they do have important roles to play. But, I do sometimes feel like the way Murakami writes females is cringe at best, mostly with "male gaze", it could be because his choice of writing is surrealism. Or could be more about the time period, he has written them (and hence the objectification). Maybe, it's just me and I'll need to read more of his works because other than that, I find his writing pretty unique and did enjoy his works.
Btw, I see Convenience Store Woman has great reviews. Will check it out, too.
Thanks, Em :)

Yeah, the images are really beautiful. :)
I'm just around 20% in, have lot more to go. The worldbuilding is intriguing too.

Planning to pick something by Fredrik Backman next (most probably 'my grandmother sends her regards and apologies ').

The bloody book is more than 1000 pages long, and as usual, I am reading the e-book. 1000 pages of text means a high word count per page. This also means that I had to content with reading 40 pages per day, which take up slightly more than 3 hours of reading time.
Book 5 is to be released in late 2024. It will be the biggest book of the series yet. I know I am going on a tangent, but thought I'd do so anyway.
I will probably give Oathbringer less than the 5 stars I gave it initially. It is enjoyable, but it's like measuring a river with a thimble.
The author is very prolific, and is reasonably grounded in reality, and in fact is busy not only in writing these Stormlight Archive books, but also appears on reddit and YouTube.
His podcast with fellow author Dan Wells makes for a light and humorous 40 minutes. The latest video is about whether Gandalf is a Mary Sue. That's their title, their words not mine.
Apart from the Stormlight series though, Sanderson barely connects with me as a successful author. I tried to read Mistborn 4, which takes place many hundreds of years after Mistborn 3. Sanderson struck gold with his doorstoppers. He is not as good a writer as George R. R. Martin, whose worldbuilding is incredibly deep and subtle. But then I need to remind myself that The Way of Kings is the best book I've read in my life so far.

I concur! I really struggled with this one and that is coming from a huge Sanderson fan. Depressed Kaladin and Shallan struggling between two personas almost ruined the book for me. They're favorites after WoR but here they both tested my patience.
And Sanderson is also undertaking the huge task of connecting different cosmere world in this series which makes it a little too long and a lot more characters to keep tabs on. Three characters from Worldbreaker are handful enough, I don't know how I would react once more characters from others worlds starts popping regularly. :(
I have read only Game of Thrones by GRRM and they are world apart. While GoT heavily relies on its characters to push the story forward, magic plays a much bigger role in Sanderson world.
I didn't like the second trilogy in Mistborn world, am not sure about the new release next month. But sooner or later I will read it as everything connects in Cosmere. sigh.

If you are into books that fall into the weird category, go for it. These kinds of books are not for me. Another two weird books that come to my mind are The Ground Beneath her Feet by Salman Rushdie and The Flounder by Günter Gräss.

You may be right about Game of Thrones. Meanwhile, I am continuing my long journey in reading book 3.

Also completed Giovanni's room. It was long overdue and I highly recommend it. It's short too.

Currently reading Career of Evil and i am quite enjoying this.

Recommended. It's a short read too.
As for my rating, it has less to do with my enjoyment but more to do with my appreciation for the writing and also because it's not everyday we get to read about such characters.
Happy Reading :)

It's a short novel. Recommended.
Also, has anyone read Howard's End, Maurice, A Passage to India by the same author? How did you like them?
One tidbit: Maurice was completed by the author in 1914, it's about gay-love. Forster was sure that if he had published it, then it would have ended his career and hence it was decided that Maurice would be published only after his death.
It got finally published in 1971, along with few of his other stories that have homosexual themes.

I need to read Howard's End. I am on the brink of reading Giovanni's Room, by James Baldwin who has that special place in the hearts of all people, just like Nella Larsen.
I have Maurice as an e-book somewhere on my laptop. I know of E.M Forster because he was the one who gave Roald Dahl his big break in books. Roald Dahl is a favourite of mine.
I'm okay with reading LGBTQ books, but not the M/M genre. Song of Achilles is a book that I don't see myself reading. F/F books are nearly as unapproachable to me, because of those that I have read, few cut the mustard.
