The US tops the world list with the most volcanoes. We are heading to Katmai NP in Alaska since it's celebrating its 100th birthday this year. It was established in 1918 to preserve the area after the violent 1912 Novarupta eruption, the largest in the 20th century. It's home to 15 active volcanoes and is one of the most active volcanic regions in the world. It’s also known for its world class wildlife viewing and 4 million acres of mountains, rivers, and coast. Unconnected to any town by roads and almost exclusively accessed by plane or boat, getting to Katmai is an adventure in itself.

It is also home to the towering Kiyotsukyo River Gorge, considered one of the three greatest valleys in Japan. Lake Nojiriko, a dammed lake formed by the eruption of two different volcanoes is a popular summer resort spot.

Further south is Shiga Kogen, a popular ski area and site of the 1998 winter Olympics. Nearby is Mount Kusatsu-Shirane. It is one of the world's few acidic lakes and is a popular tourist destination for its gorgeous turquoise-blue expanse of water. But due to recent increased volcanic warming the area has become restricted.

The last large eruption occurred in 2015 but it continues with frequent low level strombolian activity producing an iconic wisp of volcanic smoke by day while at night it colors the sky light red reminding us it is always alive.
