4. Japan: Joshinetsu Kogen National Park

Japan's iconic Mount Fuji is not their only volcano. This little country comes in #4 on our list. Located in the center of the main island is Joshinetsu Kogen NP. In the northern section of the park is the volcanic Tanigawa Mountain Chain with its steep mountains popular with rock climbers. It is also home to the towering Kiyotsukyo River Gorge, considered one of the three greatest valleys in Japan. Lake Nojiriko, a dammed lake formed by the eruption of two different volcanoes is a popular summer resort spot.
🌋 Read a book with a river or lake on the cover or a book where the author’s first and last initial can be found in TANIGAWA.
Further south is Shiga Kogen, a popular ski area and site of the 1998 winter Olympics. Nearby is Mount Kusatsu-Shirane. While it hasn’t had a major eruption since 1983, it still remains active and small eruptions have even occurred this year. At its summit are three crater lakes with Yugama Crater being the largest. It is one of the world's few acidic lakes and is a popular tourist destination for its gorgeous turquoise-blue expanse of water. But due to recent increased volcanic warming the area has become restricted.

🌋 Read a book with a main character whose first name starts with a letter found in YUGAMA.
Another highlight of the park is the large population of wild Japanese macaques or snow monkeys. They have naturally inhabited the area through the ages and descend from the steep cliffs and forest to sit in the warm waters of the hot springs. A visit at any season will enable the visitor to observe hundreds of the macaques bathing in the water.

🌋 Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in JOSHINETSU KOGEN (Three Word Minimum).
5. Chile: Villarrica National Park

We are crossing the Pacific Ocean and heading to Chile, our 5th country with the most volcanoes. The most active volcano in South America can be found in the Andes in Villarrica NP. Snow-covered Mount Villarrica rises above the lake and town of the same name. It is one of the few permanently active volcanoes in the world. The last large eruption occurred in 2015 but it continues with frequent low level strombolian activity producing an iconic wisp of volcanic smoke by day while at night it colors the sky light red reminding us it is always alive.
🌋 Read a book with a snow covered mountain on the cover or a book where the author’s first and last initial can be found in ERUPTION
Among the unique sights at Villarrica volcano are its volcanic caves. Geared up with helmets and flashlights the tour takes you into the side of this active volcano to see the hardened remains of what was once an active lava flow oozing out of the mountainous side. This underground ecosystem of solidified lava makes you fully aware that you are inside a volcano that is not yet extinct.

🌋 Read a book with a main character whose first name starts with a letter found in CAVES.
Deep in a lush forest canyon of the park, a bright red boardwalk beckons. The wooden serpentine path, shrouded in mist, leads to one of the world’s most spectacular spas: Termas Geometricas. The 17 slate lined pools, built into a ravine that teems with wild ferns and moss-covered rocks are fed by naturally heated water from the area’s hot springs. It’s a beautiful and relaxing end to our Ring of Fire tour.

🌋 Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in VILLARRICA NATIONAL PARK (Three Word Minimum).

1. USA: Katmai National Park
The US tops the world list with the most volcanoes. We are heading to Katmai NP in Alaska since it's celebrating its 100th birthday this year. It was established in 1918 to preserve the area after the violent 1912 Novarupta eruption, the largest in the 20th century. It's home to 15 active volcanoes and is one of the most active volcanic regions in the world. It’s also known for its world class wildlife viewing and 4 million acres of mountains, rivers, and coast. Unconnected to any town by roads and almost exclusively accessed by plane or boat, getting to Katmai is an adventure in itself.
✔ 🌋 Read a book with a plane or boat on the cover or a book whose author’s first and last initial can be found in NOVARUPTA.
Murder on Union Square - Victoria Thompson - 9/23/18 - VT
Katmai is famous for its brown bears, offering visitors an opportunity to study and view them in their natural habitat. Brooks Camp is the perfect place to get that classic shot of dozens of grizzlies swatting at salmon as they jump up the falls. It’s an incredible site to behold. The camp is also a starting point for back-country fishing, kayaking and hiking adventures. But be sure to get your bear safety lesson before heading out.
✔ 🌋 Read a book with a main character whose first name starts with a letter found in BROOKS.
Dead Stop - Barbara Nickless - 8/27/18 - Sydney Parnell - S
The Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes was named by a National Geographic expedition that made its way to the valley in 1916 and found this otherworldly sight of ash and thousands of hissing steam jets. Visitors can hop on a daily bus tour where a ranger will accompany you on the 3-mile hike into the valley. The sight of all this grey in the middle of Alaska’s gorgeous greenery is awe-inspiring and helps you understand the true power of the volcano.
✔ 🌋 Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in KATMAI NATIONAL PARK (Three Word Minimum).
Mark of the Lion - Suzanne Arruda - 9/20/18 - MOTL
2. Russia: Volcanoes of Kamchatka
Russia comes in #2 on our list. The Volcanoes of Kamchatka, a UNESCO world heritage site, is one of the most outstanding volcanic regions in the world with a high density of active volcanoes. We will visit three of its six distinct parks. Klyuchevskoy Nature park, named after the highest active volcano in Eurasia, opened in 1999. This park has it all. It's the place to go to climb the crater of an active volcano, walk through lava flow and touch the blue ice of the largest glacier in Kamchatka.
✔ 🌋 Read a book with fire on the cover or a book where the author’s first and last initial can be found in KLYUCHEVSKOY.
QB VII - Leon Uris - 8/2/18 - LU
Situated in the beautiful valley of the Nalychevo River, Nalychevo Nature Park is known for its many hot and cold thermal springs. In this comparatively small territory there are more than 200 springs, some with facilities and others just out in the wild. Many of these springs have a rare chemical composition that you can’t find anywhere else on the Earth that has a therapeutic effect on musculoskeletal and cardiovascular systems.
✔ 🌋 Read a book with a main character whose first name starts with a letter found in SPRINGS.
The Obsession - Nora Roberts - 9/28/18 - Naomi Bowes - N
Kronotsky is the oldest nature reserve in Kamchatka. Its 16 volcanoes gracefully wrap themselves around the beautiful and immense Lake Kronotskoye. The reserve is also home to Russia’s only geyser basin, the second largest in the world. Gushing geysers, raging mud cauldrons, hot water and steam jets create a really fantastic sight to see.
✔ 🌋 Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in VOLCANOES OF KAMCHATKA (Three Word Minimum).

3. Indonesia: Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park
Indonesia is #3 on the list of world volcanoes. Located in East Java, Bromo Tengger Semeru NP is one of the largest parks in the country. It has two major volcano groups, the first highlighting Mount Bromo, an awe-inspiring active volcano that sits in the middle of a plain called the Sea of Sand. The iconic blown-off top reveals an active crater emitting sulfurous smoke, creating a surreal lunar-like landscape. Jeep tours are a fun way to explore the volcano - the sunrise tour being the most popular.
✔ 🌋 Read a book with Jeep-like vehicle on the cover or a book where the author’s first and last initial can be found in SUNRISE TOUR.
Final Witness -Simon Tolkien - 9/7/18 - ST
The park's second volcanic group has 9 volcanoes that center around Mount Semeru, or “The Great Mountain”. This is the highest volcano in Java at 12,000 ft and one of its most active. It erupts reliably every 20 minutes, belching out a huge cloud of steam and smoke. The ecosystem surrounding Semeru is home to endangered and protected flora such as Javanese Edelweiss and 200 species of orchids.
✔ 🌋 Read a book with a main character whose first name starts with a letter found in SEMERU.
The Yiddish Policemen's Union - Michael Chabon - 9/19/18 - Meyer Landesman - M
There is more to the park than its volcanoes. The spectacular Madakaripura Waterfalls is regarded as a holy place by the locals, calling its waters the elixir of life. The small, serene and ghostly Lakes Ranupani and Ranu Regulo add to the feelings of spirituality in the area. Be sure to visit the villages of the Tenggerese. These indigenous people live in a very difficult environment but their pride in surviving can be seen in their wonderfully colored and immaculately tidy villages.

Guide: Complete all 15 tasks
15 of 15 Complete
The Hypnotist's Love Story - Liane Moriarty - 9/22/18 - THLS
✔ 🌋 Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in BROMO TENGGER SEMERU (Three Word Minimum).
Blueberry Muffin Murder - Joanne Fluke - 8/25/18 - BMM
✔ 🌋 Read a book with a river or lake on the cover or a book where the author’s first and last initial can be found in TANIGAWA.
Artemis - Andy Weir - 8/30/18 - AW
Further south is Shiga Kogen, a popular ski area and site of the 1998 winter Olympics. Nearby is Mount Kusatsu-Shirane. While it hasn’t had a major eruption since 1983, it still remains active and small eruptions have even occurred this year. At its summit are three crater lakes with Yugama Crater being the largest. It is one of the world's few acidic lakes and is a popular tourist destination for its gorgeous turquoise-blue expanse of water. But due to recent increased volcanic warming the area has become restricted.
✔ 🌋 Read a book with a main character whose first name starts with a letter found in YUGAMA.
Gale Force - Owen Laukkanen - 8/10/18 - McKenna Rhodes - M
Another highlight of the park is the large population of wild Japanese macaques or snow monkeys. They have naturally inhabited the area through the ages and descend from the steep cliffs and forest to sit in the warm waters of the hot springs. A visit at any season will enable the visitor to observe hundreds of the macaques bathing in the water.
✔🌋 Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in JOSHINETSU KOGEN (Three Word Minimum).
The Judas Strain - James Rollins -10/10/18
✔ 🌋 Read a book with a snow covered mountain on the cover or a book where the author’s first and last initial can be found in ERUPTION
The Thousand-Dollar Tan Line - Rob Thomas - 8/27/18 - RT
Among the unique sights at Villarrica volcano are its volcanic caves. Geared up with helmets and flashlights the tour takes you into the side of this active volcano to see the hardened remains of what was once an active lava flow oozing out of the mountainous side. This underground ecosystem of solidified lava makes you fully aware that you are inside a volcano that is not yet extinct.
✔ 🌋 Read a book with a main character whose first name starts with a letter found in CAVES.
Club Dead - Charlaine Harris - 9/25/18 - Sookie - S
Deep in a lush forest canyon of the park, a bright red boardwalk beckons. The wooden serpentine path, shrouded in mist, leads to one of the world’s most spectacular spas: Termas Geometricas. The 17 slate lined pools, built into a ravine that teems with wild ferns and moss-covered rocks are fed by naturally heated water from the area’s hot springs. It’s a beautiful and relaxing end to our Ring of Fire tour.

🌋 Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in KATMAI NATIONAL PARK (Three Word Minimum).
🌋 Read a book with fire on the cover or a book where the author’s first and last initial can be found in KLYUCHEVSKOY.
🌋 Read a book with a main character whose first name starts with a letter found in SPRINGS.
🌋 Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in VOLCANOES OF KAMCHATKA (Three Word Minimum).
🌋 Read a book with Jeep-like vehicle on the cover or a book where the author’s first and last initial can be found in SUNRISE TOUR.
🌋 Read a book with a main character whose first name starts with a letter found in SEMERU.

🌋 Read a book with a plane or boat on the cover or a book whose author’s first and last initial can be found in NOVARUPTA.
🌋 Read a book with a main character whose first name starts with a letter found in BROOKS.
