Melina (blodgarm) | 10 comments Just read The Tell tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe. When I say read, I mean listened to on LibriVox with the incredible Phil Chenevert to keep me company. Quick horror climax, if you're into that sort of thing.

Also took care of my current graphic novel love by reading Death: the time of your life by Neil Gaiman, but I wasn't too impressed, despite my general respect for this guy.

Meredith | 1779 comments Recently finished The Night Masquerade, the finale of the Binti trilogy of novellas, by Nnedi Okorafor. Enjoyable Afro-futurism (a new genre for me) with a main character who is a believable person with emotions and personal struggles while also going through amazing transformations across the series and tapping into strengths she didn't know she had. Highly recommend the series.

Also read Long Hot Summoning, finishing The Keeper's Chronicles trilogy by Tanya Huff. Fun urban fantasy with a lot of humor, often even making fun of itself. Also, there are talking cats.

Borne, by Jeff VanderMeer. More straightforward in some respects than The Southern Reach trilogy, but there's still a lot of weirdness and mystery, plus dystopian wasteland, interesting biotech, and giant bears.

Murder on the Quai by Cara Black = entertaining as per usual for this author

A Gathering of Shadows on the other hand was five stars and I rushed to get the sequel. I hope you enjoy it as much!

I won't be continuing the series, either. If it was a stand-alone I might've bumped up to 3 stars, but it went down to 2, instead.

Tomas Grizzly | 448 comments After reading the first book, I now started Tower Lord with the plan to join the group re-read of Fahrenheit 451 after.

message 664: by Robert (new)

Robert Collins Last night I finished Tigana. (I know; late to the party, as always.) What a great read! There was an interesting world with intriguing characters. The plot kept me going in the first three-quarters of the novel, and had me guessing in the last quarter as to how it would end up. I also enjoyed that it was set in a land inspired by Italy of the Middle Ages. Don't always get that in fantasy. Now to figure out what to read next on the list of books I got over the holidays...

I'm having a hard time focusing on books right now. Really loving The Dispossessed but it's a lot more book than I anticipated and as I own it, I'm trying to go back and forth between it and my more temporarily-owned things.

So, I went to The Invisible Library thinking it's short and light. But it's so light that I can't really ground myself in it. Meanwhile, I really wanted to read The Three-Body Problem, and it's due back in two weeks with no hope of renewal, so I'm gonna get that going, too. Who knows, maybe I'll push to finish TIL today, as I'm basically skimming it at this point. And then I can read 3 Body with less guilt.

message 666: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10430 comments I'm also having trouble concentrating on anything, but I actually read five graphic novels today. Five! I've had them from the library for a long time, and I just realized I can't renew them, so I had to read them. I'm hoping this will encourage me to get other library books read. I spent most of February just getting things from the library but not reading anything, so now I'm drowning in library books. And I have a bunch of holds waiting for me to pick them up.

I'm a tiny bit into The Fall of the Kings audiobook, which is almost 20 hours long, so I don't know how long that'll take me. Then I have to finish The City & the City and a library audiobook (Little Fires Everywhere), before I can start on this month's books. But I also have all those other library books. I feel overwhelmed. I'm tempted to take all the library books back, because I feel like a failure with them sitting here unread.

message 667: by Eric (new)

Eric | 463 comments I finished The Last Days of Night by Graham Moore The Last Days of Night and will start Archangel Down (Archangel Project, #1) by C. Gockel Archangel Down. The former illuminating. The latter spacey.

I'm really enjoying Nexus and can't believe it took me so long to run across this gem.

On the other hand, Leviathan Wakes is a little underwhelming. I don't understand all the hype about this book.

message 681: by Melina (new)

Melina (blodgarm) | 10 comments Still trying to bring myself to continue Ready Player One, even though I'm not sure I enjoy the way it's written. But I'm determined to give it a try and "judge" it without the influence of negative reviews. I also started rereading Ulysses, the old hardcore Greek version I haven't touched since high school, which is something I'm almost too excited about. And since two books aren't enough, I'm slowly going through the American Vampire graphic novel (which started pretty strong but got kinda boring after a bit) as well as Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman.

Travis Foster (travismfoster) | 1154 comments SFF:

Brandon Sanderson's The Final Empire. Loved the world building and magic system, though it didn't grab me nearly as much as the Stormlight books.

Tamora Pierce's Protector of the Small Series (First Test, Page, Squire, and Lady Knight). These books are just the best! Kel is an incredible hero. I only wish I'd first encountered them years ago.

Naomi Alderman's The Power. One of the most thoughtful, rigorous, terrifying, funny, suspenseful, and amazing social satires I've ever read. I loved it and can't wait for the full discussion later this month.

Josiah Bancroft's Senlin Ascends. Such a wild and intricate world, but all its different forms of entrapment filled me with anxiety from beginning to end -- something I think says more about me than the book.

Non SFF:

Patrisse Khan-Cullors's When They Call You a Terrorist: A Black Lives Matter Memoir. I listened to the audiobook, which the author narrates. It was for me an incredibly inspiring and hopeful take on chosen families and how activism can be successful even when faced with very long odds.

Ryan Van Meter's If You Knew Then What I Know Now. A gay coming-of-age memoir told in a series of beautiful and nicely paced essays about effeminacy, bullying, friendship, and family.

message 691: by Jordan (new)

Jordan (justiceofkalr) | 403 comments Looks like I'm finally out of my February reading slump. So far this month I've finished:

Beneath the Sugar Sky, the third Wayward Children book. Somehow it was not about who/what I thought it was about, but this did not stop it from being awesome fun. I really love this series and the dark fairy tale feel to it and hope she writes more. Listened to this one on audio.

A Girl Like That which is non-sci-fi, young adult. Read this for my library's Mock Printz award committee. It's a really good book about a teenage girl of Indian descent living in Saudi Arabi. Lots of interesting looks at society and culture and how they shape people.

Honor Among Thieves. YA sci-fi, which was actually a little better than I expected. I felt like there were echoes of a lot of other things going on in this book, but it did enough of it's own to feel original and not overly cliched. I was excited that there was pretty much no romance and a there was a strong female friendship going on.

The Lost Plot. I finally finished the latest Invisible Library book. It's not that I didn't enjoy it, I just wasn't in the mood for it and kept putting off reading it. It's a fun addition to the series and I'm definitely intrigued to see where the series goes now after that ending.

Giant Spider & Me: A Post-Apocalyptic Tale Vol. 1. A post-apocalyptic manga about a girl and her giant spider. Which actually turns out to be mostly a slice-of-life cooking manga. It's a bizarre combination that somehow works.

少女終末旅行 4 Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou 4 . Girls' Last Tour Volume 4. I really like this manga series so far. It's about two girls traveling around a weird post-apocalyptic world in their tank. Reminds me a lot of Blame! and Kino's Journey. Now to wait for the next volume to get translated.

Currently reading:

Purple Hearts, the last book in an alt-history where women served and were drafted into the military in WWII. This is one of my favorite book series and so far the last volume is not disappointing. It's YA, but doesn't really fall in to a lot of the YA cliches.

Children of Blood and Bone I'm still making up my mind about this one despite being almost a quarter of the way through. The fast pacing so far has me worried if it can keep it up for the rest of the book.

The Black Tides of HeavenAnother book I've been reading for seemingly forever. Despite it's short size I've just had trouble picking it up. I really enjoy it when I do though.

Four Roads Cross, which is another leftover from my book slump that I've been slowly inching my way through. I love the Craft Sequence so much.

The Apocalypse of Elena Mendoza which is completely bizarre. It's about a girl who hears voices from inanimate objects and now discovers she has the power to heal people at a cost. It's just incredibly weird. Listening to this one on audio.

Trike Just finished When the English Fall, which is about the apocalypse told from the POV of an Amish farmer. Promising premise but it doesn’t follow through. 2 stars.

Ashley in Wonderland (whotellsyourstory) | 261 comments Yeah Phrynne, you should join the Tortall buddy read if you want. I’m behind too - I’m in the middle of the last Song of the Lioness book. I think there’s been a few others that have just joined in recently.

Meredith | 1779 comments My niece is 11 and a voracious reader. She definitely likes fantasy series (Harry Potter and others). My poor sister is having a hard time finding new stuff for her to read. I've never read them, but after seeing so many coments, I am wondering if the Tortall books are right for her age? What is a good place to start? I see there's more than one series of books set in the Tortall universe. thanks for any thoughts.

message 697: by Phrynne (new)

Phrynne Thanks Allison and Ashley. I hadn't seen that discussion. I will go there now:)

Ashley in Wonderland (whotellsyourstory) | 261 comments Meredith, you should post your question in the Tortall buddy read thread. I don’t know if I’d personally recommend the Song of the Lioness quartet to an 11-year-old, only because the main character does become sexually active. It isn’t talked about a lot, and definitely no details or descriptions of anything, but I don’t know if I’d be comfortable with my daughters reading about it that young. The other series may not have sex in them, but I haven’t read them yet. The others in the group can help you out more though. :)
