Jacqueline | 2428 comments All the books and no wine.....I prefer to read while I’m drinking tea 😜 Even though it is expensive tea....

But if it had to be wine and books I’d go for cheap books and cheap wine and use the savings for more cheap books.

You are a wise woman, and many generations shall honor you.

Melina (blodgarm) | 10 comments Currently reading The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins, which I found surprisingly entertaining, considering how slow many classics can be. I also started Ready Player One . The reviews are so and so, but I needed a light sci-fi before jumping back into the hardcore stuff.. Also reading some messed up version of Cinderella, but let's not talk about that.

Cheap books and cheaper booze.

lol Michele!

Free books and booze just nice enough not to cause esophageal damage?

Don't judge, I'm not the one who invented whiskey.

Really chomping at the bit to read my cheap Dispossessed book. I actually think it's an example of when the upgrade would have been worth it--the gutter is basically non-existent. I'm going to have to unglue the spine to know what the inner half of each page says.

Excellent, expensive booze and good books. Sipping whiskey lasts a long time. A little dab will do you.

Good Tequila + The Library!

I just finished On Basilisk Station which I hated and am currently reading Feed which, as a suprise to me, am enjoying quite a bit. I don't usually get into zombie books but this is more a societal upheaval story with zombies as the catalyst.

Hank I agree with everything you just said except the word "tequila."

Also, thanks for saying, even briefly, what your opinion of On Basilisk Station was! I tend to miss reviews unless I know what sort of situation I'm getting myself into. Good review!

message 560: by Hank (new)

Hank (hankenstein) | 1231 comments You never really know what situation you get into when reading my reviews, coherency is not my strong suit, maybe it is the tequila :)

message 561: by Jacqueline (new)

Jacqueline | 2428 comments I would like to clarify when I say cheap books I don’t mean cheap and nasty....I mean good books at bargain prices. Or free from the library.

Still a fan of cheap books and tea. If you start putting tequila or any other alcohol into the mix I can’t see the page to read it.

If you hated On Basilisk Station, don't try reading any of the others in the series. They generally hold to the model that is set in that book, they just get longer with more attempts at mathematical explanations as to the way the weapons work. In my view Pulp Fiction should never be allowed to be published in books over a thousand pages and hard back.

message 566: by Trike (new)

Trike Reasonably priced books and opioids.

Hmmm, I hadn't even considered another alternative. But I am a second hand shopper to the hilt. Of course even then some of the WWII books I get aren't exactly inexpensive.

I loved RPO, but then I am a child of the 1980s video game arcades (oh, the quarters I spent!), so it was all a big adorable flashback for me.

message 571: by Don (new)

Don Dunham Allison, have you read "Trustee from the tool room" ?

message 572: by Don (new)

Don Dunham doesn't go lower than Jack Daniels in good times but enjoys cheap or expensive Port wine.

Don Dunham I do like a dirty martini with Stoli 100 proof and a good spy novel.

message 580: by Eric (new)

Eric | 463 comments I finished Iron Wolf (Patrick McLanahan, #20) by Dale Brown Iron Wolf. Dale Brown is pushing the envelope into Sci Fi with his high tech. weapon battles. Mindless entertainment. Next up The Circle of Ceridwen (Circle of Ceridwen Saga #1) by Octavia Randolph The Circle of Ceridwen. It will be interesting to see if this is fantasy or borderline historical fiction. Six books in the series. I'll see how number one goes.

Probably mead with Circle, given it's 871 AD. ;)

message 581: by HeyT (new)

HeyT | 505 comments Just finished All the Birds in the Sky and The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue. I don't think I would have liked Gentleman's Guide half as much if I hadn't been listening to the audible version. Christian Coulson was perfection.

message 582: by Beth (new)

Beth | 211 comments I've started the alternate history The Years of Rice and Salt by Kim Stanley Robinson. I like it so far; it's vastly more interesting than the similar-length Blue Mars. (I liked the first two Mars books, but I DNFed that one...)

Is anyone interested in a buddy read of this book? I was looking at the book discussions listed on its GR page and I'm a little surprised there aren't more discussions...

Normally I accompany my reading with beer or a G&T though following our return from Bucharest we do have (temporarily) some good tuica.
The books are whatever is on my shelf (it is cheapest if you have already paid out the money) but I never mix alcohol with e-books. The touch-thingy doesn't seem able to sense my fingers when I am inebriated.

message 584: by Phrynne (new)

Phrynne Just finished Chupacabra's Song by Jim C. Hines Chupacabra's Song (Magic ex Libris) by Jim C. Hines .
It is only a short story but very interesting if you like his Magic ex Libris series

Rob (robzak) | 876 comments I listened to The Land: Forging. Much like the first it was fun, but little else. ★★★☆☆ - (My Review)

I also finally listened to Prince of Thorns after owning it for several years. I didn't like it nearly as much as Red Sister, but well enough to continue the series - ★★★½☆ - (My Review)

The blurb is certainly intriguing: "If Battlestar Gallactica made love to Starship Troopers and had an illegitimate child... and that child was raised by the crew of Firefly, you would only begin to have Planetfall."

message 590: by Eric (new)

Eric | 463 comments Captain wrote: "probably one of those "free" days that I think authors get if they publish on amazon."

Authors on Amazon can set their own promotional. Free for a period, reduced price, etc. Many do so to promote a series. Many end up on https://www.bookbub.com/welcome (BookBubs). The authors chose the promotion. Bookbubs does showcase the authors' "deals."

message 591: by Esther (new)

Esther (eshchory) | 555 comments Captain wrote: "Yeah I thought that blurb was pretty enticing too, but I don't know if it is really the best description of the book. Its just a good military Sci-Fi. At that price I will give it a whirl!

I'm a child of the 90's, but my country is slow so everything was still technically 80's when I was growing up. And I love the era, which is a big reason why I needed to read RPO.

Melina (blodgarm) | 10 comments Trike wrote: "Meth and Atlas Shrugged."

Good luck with Atlas Shrugged...

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2719 comments Finished Stormdancer last night. After a slow start, it really picked up once Yukiko and Buruu finally came together in the story. I enjoyed watching their relationship develop, and became truly invested in their story and the fight against Shogun.

That said, I also find myself wishing it was a stand alone book. I have fears that this is going to be a Hunger Games* type thing, where the first story was more personal and I liked it ok enough, but when it takes on a larger focus it just sort of falls apart.

(*Basing this on the movies, as I never read past the first book.)

I will probably pick up the next two, though. I can deal with a trilogy.

***

Started Caraval this morning. Not very far in, but it wasn't quite what I was expecting so far.

How fun! I go to the Utah Shakespeare Festival every year and that repertory group is working through all the historicals over the course of several years. They're performing Henry VI Part I this year.

message 598: by Julia (new)

Julia | 957 comments We go to Shakespeare & Company in Western Massachusetts most summers. Maybe we'll also make it to the Stratford Festival of Canada, since we finally got passports this coming summer.

Right now I'm reading a Star Trek Deep Space Nine novel set significantly after the series. Sisko is now the captain of the ship U.S. S. Robinson in the Gamma Quadrant called Original Sin by David R. George III.
