Second reading in audiobook: my general impressions of this book haven't changed much, or at all. It's wobbly in places. We're called on to try to sort out a mystery without having enough connection with the many supporting characters to care very mu

"Reading a book--even one I really enjoyed--three times in six years is too much.* I might take another crack at it when Alecto is announced, depending on how far in the future that ends up being.
* This also happened with Hogfather, which was going to be an annual read until I started hating the idea of reading it yet again. No big surprise, then." — Aug 13, 2025 03:29PM

"Listening to maybe ten minutes of this (if that) while winding down for bed means it's going very, very slowly. At first it felt silly for Cat and others to constantly be explaining the world-building to each other as they go along, but it's been fun now that I'm used to it. It's just the way people communicate with each other in this setting, I guess!" — Mar 04, 2026 06:37AM
